Gone but not forgotten: Knoxville area restaurants and retailers we miss.

Also, they turned the Waffle House 90 degrees when they built the new one. The old one was oriented perpendicular to Papermill. The new one doesn't seem to be appreciably bigger though.

Edit: That old WH was memorable to me for being the first place I saw Peyton Manning when he first showed up in town.

Yea, I think that place had a for sale sign on it. They probably couldn't work out a lease renewal or purchase price.

That lot where the Quarterback was located has been vacant for a long time.

It was weird that they tore down the Waffle House and built another one right on the same spot.

No, I know the owner well. He had purchased a piece of property several years ago with long term plans of moving to it. His move was in the works for some time.

Swenson's in West Knox and Sevierville. I ate their quite a bit in early to mid 80's.

Loved that place. Daryl's on Merchant and Kingston Pike if they haven't already been mentioned.

Yeah, I ate at Daryl's on Merchants several times until one night a waitress and manager charged me for 2 soft drink refills so I never went back. I had eaten there before and refills had always been free.

The little coffee shop at Borders used to sell this awesome frozen chai latte. I haven't been able to find a place that sells anything that tastes like it.

I bought several pair of shoes at some place out west about 15 years ago. It was driving me nuts trying to remember where. Just For Feet (there was another next to East Towne Mall). Just across Parkside from Home Depot. Looks like Ferguson is in the building now.

I haven't seen it yet, but apparently there's a car dealer going in just west of McKay's on Papermill Road. It's been a hot tub place... John Banks Buick before that. It's gone full circle.
Bill Rogers.

I miss Smoky Mountain Markets, especially the one that was on Chapman Hwy across from Baptist Hospital.

I forgot about Blue Circle.

Mad Jack Fielden's Furniture Warehouse - he had Big John Tate there all the time to sign autographs & he would jump off his building. Also when the tv show Dallas was popular he had a little person named PR Pewing doing commercials in a cowboy hat. PC police would hang him today. He even had a commercial where they hung from a tree for having too low of prices.

He drove through a tunnel of fire on a bicycle or a tricycle during a promo at Atomic Speedway. It didn't work out too well for Mad Jack.

I vaguely remembered being in a warehouse or similar building and someone jumping out onto boxes. Did it a few times from what I recall. That's great you posted this.

Thanks.

The commercial were they hang Mad Jack is on Vimeo.
