Gone but not forgotten: Knoxville area restaurants and retailers we miss.

It was mentioned before, but Mr. George's Barber Shop on Middlebrook. Would go get a $5 haircut and then mom would take us to that little video rental store just down the road and rent a Nes or SNES game. Anyone remember what the video store was called? It's a laundromat now

I’m glad you mentioned Mr. George. We went to him when he was in the old house on Middlebrook and then when he moved to that new place on the hill. I’d kill to have some of those old UT and Air Force posters he had up.

Main point though, that guy was damn near a saint. My grandfather saw him for years, and George would go to the nursing home to cut his hair when Papaw was near the end. Refused any money. He did that for all kinds of people.

When I was at U.T. back in the late 60's and early 70's , we would play golf at Lambert Acres, and stop back by a little restaurant , not far from the airport on Alcoa Highway. It was called Sis's Grille. We could eat a meat and 3 vegetables plus a drink with unlimited refills for $1.00, and that included tax. It was 94 cents plus tax.

After walking the golf course, we drank maybe a gallon of tea with our meal. That location later became a tattoo parlor, but I don't know what it is now.

I lived off Middlebrook for a couple years. I remember that video store well. It had an adult room which was oddly placed right next to the video game section. We would also get some ice cream at that little ice cream shop called Kirby's Ice Cream in between Mr. George and the video store. Getting a haircut always ended up as a good day

The Family Inn on Papermill rd. just off Kingston Pike-weekend 3am-5am breakfast buffet for the late night drinking crowd. The same place that was sung about in Third-rate romance by the Amazing Rhythm Aces with Russell Smith!

You probably mean on Northshore rather than Papermill (Papermill exit). I think Third Rate Romance was about the Family Inn near Downtown West Blvd.

Has anybody mentioned the old hole in the wall, Brother Jack's on University, near Knoxville College? You had to go to the end of 17th, take a left on Western, and the right at the stop light at the bottom of the hill, across from Middlebrook Pike.

A Pigsburger on white bread was 26 cents when I was at U.T. You had to go next door to the grocery to get a drink. If you wanted to eat there, you had to stand. They had a shelf along the wall at counter height where you could eat.

That old lady that worked there was off kilter. I think she was the owner's mother-in-law.

Thinking back I totally remember that old lady and yes she was truly off. It was always hit or miss when you went to the counter as to whether she was going to weird you out or just take your order and act halfway normal.

Disc Exchange.

One of my guilty pleasures was coming home when I was in the Air Force and visiting that store and buying up all the good metal I could find.

The Frontier House on KP.

Wasn’t there a putt putt place out where Cedar Bluff and Middlebrook come together? I swear I remember one.

I've probably posted before but I dont care

Antonios: great pizza as well as a great place to drink pitchers on the weekend

Old Ivy's: $3 all you can drink on Mondays 9-12

Gabbys: 3-4-1 on Wednesday nites. A line out the door down the strip on the weekends

Electric Wizard: nothing special food or drink. Had blackjack video games and would pay out

Best Italian Restaurant: yeah, there's one in Gatlinburg but it was a great Sunday night eat since all the cafeterias were closed on Sunday nights

OCharleys: what a game day place to meet

Sam and Andy's

Roman Room: Great burgers

Library/Last Lap

What was that place over by East Town mall years ago that inside looked kinda like a castle or something? Had a humongous sundae for dessert.

Spinakers is the restaurant that was attached to east town mall for a while was that it?

Also from a really long time ago, do you guys remember the Roman Room?

Edit: well after reading this page it appears some of you do.

What about Cowboys on Middlebrook?

I work with one of the sons of the original owner. I never got a pig burger but I am told they were excellent.
