Good hire with potential to be a great hire.

What style of offense does he run. Said on ESPN he would be looking for a different style of QB?

We played them last year and he ran the spread option with a VERY good running back and a decent option QB. It could be that he brings that here, which would probably mean Bray is gone and a rough adjustment next year when our schedule is absolute hell.

That said, Neal is a great running back, and Peterman is supposed to be a tough QB who knows how to run. So if he does bring that show here, it could work after a year or so of adjustment. A&M was very successful in the SEC running the option this year.

We just had a TN coach inducted into the Hall of Fame after learning how to be a great coach from a guy who had won a National Championship and went on and won a National Championship himself.

Jones could be a great hire for TN. He has won, record 50-27.

He won the Mid-American Conference championship in 2 of the 3 years at Central Michigan.

He tied for the Big East Championship in 2 of his 3 years there and was named Big East Coach of the Year in 2012.

He is also 2-1 against Strong who the majority of the board wanted to be named UT coach.

Lets give the guy a chance.

Jones is exactly what Tennessee needs to now. He's a winner known for making players better.

He's been following Brian Kelly around. This is not a good hire.

Would you want to follow a man you respect, love working for, and who has shown you the ropes? I swear some of you guys have never had a job where an apprenticeship/mentoring is required

It would be nice to see a QB that can run 2 yards to pick up a first down. His defense was ranked pretty good this year too.

Good bye.You lost me with weakness is recruiting. You do realize what conference we play in dont you.We also are in a state with a very small tallent pool to choose from.If u think this guy is going to go into other states and get players to come play at Tn.you r fning dreaming. We will be bottom feeders for the next 5 yrs.You can bank on that.Makes me sick I could puke right now.Not mad at Jones I am sure he is a good guy.I absolutley will contribute any amount of money I can to rid this university of Martin,Cheek, and BamaDave.

If recruiting is your #1 priority, Jones probably isn't your guy. If Xs and Os or Winning or Player Development are at the top of your list, he's as good as anyone available. He can't excel in every area. He's a football coach, not Jesus.

Coach Butch Jones is among the top young coaches on the rise. In my opinion, he and Larry Fedora were 1 and 1-a.

Jones is a proven winner who has an established reputation for getting more out of less talented players. Players absolutely love playing for him. He is an honorable man with an unchallenged reputation. He's a strong offensive mind. If we keep Coach Cheney as OC, we've got a really good chance to keep Bray, Hunter and Patterson and lead them to unimaginable heights.

Jones only glaring weakness is in recruiting. He's never had a top 40 class. Dave Hart will need to surround him with good recruiters. There's a good chance Jay Graham stays.

I really like this hire. I'm glad we made a go at Gruden, but deep down we knew he was headed to the Cowboys, Eagles or another NFL team. Mike Gundy wasn't going to leave his alma mater any more than Phil Fulmer would have ever left Tennessee. Strong was our first real candidate and he showed loyalty to the guy who gave him his first break. No shame there. We landed a coach on the rise to take us with him.

Listen, I wish our new coach every success. We damn sure need him to succeed. But we needed Hart to make an exceptional hire, a Big Boy hire--to get a guy like Pelini or Patterson, who would have been an excellent hire, or somebody who would have made people---recruits, the league--take notice. And we didn't get it. I'm not saying it would have been easy--but that was the goal. Strong has nice credentials, but I had my worries about him; felt he was 6.5 on 1-10 scale when we needed a 7.5. Jones is a bit under that. I'm sure he's got qualities--so does Dooley--but this is a BIG BOY conference is ever there was one; the SEC is stronger now than I can ever remember it. And we needed a big boy coach. As they say, we shall see. He'd better find and hire at least three big-time recruiters, that is for sure, or we'll be doing this again before long.

Agree with your last assessment, but Jones is actually a better hire than Pelini would have been.
Two reasons for that:
1) The guy who just took his team behind the woodshed (and really, it was 70-17, not 70-31 if you take away the last 4 mins of the game, i.e., garbage time), Bret Bielema, got hired in the same conference. I would have NO confidence that Tennessee would have beaten Arkansas the next time they showed up on our schedule.
2) Nebraska fans were (are) hopeful that someone takes him off their hands. When Nebraska fans are happy at the prospect of their coach leaving, that tells you something.

This could go one of two ways - 1) either he rode Kelly's coattails and isn't that good OR 2) he learned how to be a great coach from the guy who is currently playing for the National Championship...

You talking about Dooley or Sal...

Obviously hoping for the latter.

Bottom line u dont recruit in this league you dont compete much less win.If he dont hire some great recruiters we r done. The gap is already bad enough. Always remember its not about x and 0 s its about the Jimmy and Joes. There is no league where this holds true moore than the Sec.Every body has lots of money, great stadiums, and great coaches. It thus becomes more about recruiting .Who does it better is who wins. You r going to get an example of how much recruiting matters when alabama curb stomps jones mentor and his ND team in a few weeks. Then u tell me how much recruiting matters This is the best team they have had in 20 yrs. with a full 4 yrs of kelly's players alnd they r gonna lose badly

He'll recruit. Tennessee sells itself for alot of players out there. It is certainly a more attractive destination than Cincinatti. He'll also be surrounded by recruiters to augment his weaknesses.

If Coach Jones can continue to get it done on the field and if he continues to develop players the way he always has, he will succeed at Tennessee.

We have a coach now. Last I checked, the fans don't line up and play a single down, so we can't win or lose games. However, a united fan base can propel the team and provide a home field advantage. Time for ALL Vol fans to pull together and UNITE

If you are SICK of losing to Bammer, then come together as ONE today.

Thank you for your time. Carry on.

Look I understand that your an SEC homer but ND isn't nearly as far off talent wise from Bama as you may believe. With thier lack of recent success, multiple coaches and next no instate talent they still manage to pull in top 25 classes every year and they pull that talent from coast to coast, where Bama pulls most of its talent from within the SEC region.
If you were to take an unbiased look at both teams you would realize they are almost identical. Both are oaded with talent, bot have solid D's, both have good offenses and both have 4 wins against top 25 teams(when they played the games. The difference is Bama lost to a top 25 team that runs a very similar offense to what ND runs. ND on the other hand has a tendency to play down to their competition.
The ND/Bama game will be a low scoring slugfest that will be determined by which D has the fewest mistakes.

I will give the guy my support as a VFL as far as his recruiting goes I agree that he will need some assistants to augment and help boost it . UT has the appeal as we have seen even with Dooley to pull some talented players that just needed a good coach so now hopefully we have the Coach that can actually coach. His recruiting classes at Cincy were not bad considering it was Cincy and he also had OSU to recruit against.

He went to central michigan after kelly and then cincinatti after kelly. He is now in a league where he will have to out recruit all of the big boys in order to catch up. Do you honestly think he's going to out recruit when most of these kids will have no idea who he is, and the school he coach's for has been irrelevant for most of their lives?

Blind sheep piss me off.

It is possible, he can do it. This guy did not make excuses:
Exhibit A

Franklin was only a coordinator from Maryland...Maryland!!! and he came into the SEC and we all know how that program is going now compared to their past history.

Now, will Coach Jones actually be able to pull it off? Only time will tell. I am willing to give him a chance.
