"If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon." Can anyone tell me exactly what he tried to accomplish with that quote if it wasn't for political purposes.

He's just showing again that he's a divider, not a uniter and is playing the race card for minorities.

You conveniently leave out the rest of his comments Typical of the far right hate machine You see Obama first as a black man, then POTUS.

IN CONTEXT of the VERY NEXT sentences, he is saying ALL AMERICANS want an investigation that gets to the truth.

But you of course omit that.

it's ridiculous for the Pres to be making statements on a single incident like this. However it does show he will use it in the future for some political point/gain

"When I think about this boy, I think about my own kids," Obama said in Rose Garden remarks. "I think every parent in America should be able to understand why it is absolutely imperative that we investigate every aspect of this. And that everybody pull together."

Obama has come under fire from some black leaders for failing to comment on a case that has become a major national story — and brought thousands of Americans into the streets for demonstrations calling for the arrest of Martin's shooter. One black leader*even wondered
why Obama called a Georgetown student who was attacked by Rush Limbaugh, but not Martin's family. Obama's comments Friday represent the first time the president has
addressed the growing controversy.

"My main message is to the parents of Trayvon Martin. You know, if I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon," Obama said. "All of us as Americans are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves."

"Obviously this is a tragedy. I can only imagine what these parents are going through," Obama said. "All of us have to do some soul searching to figure out how something like this has happened."

shouldn't Obama also comment on the rush to judgment before the facts come out? shouldn't he condemn statements by leaders in the black community, like Farrakhan and Sharpton, that only stoke racial tension?

so if I say if "I had a son he would look like zimmerman and all americans want an investigation that gets to the truth" that's ok?

What the F are you talking about? He hasn't called for anyone to be arrested or said the investigation was tarnished or even attacked the SYG law, or called for the police chief to be fired, etc.

He says TO THE PARENTS of the kid that he can sympathize with their loss and wants a complete investigation to get to the truth of what occurred.

His comments are not REMOTELY inflammatory, unless you, like the OP, want to intentionally ignore the parts where he says what everyone really does want, which is just to feel assured that the investigation is thorough.

The fact that he has black kids means only that he can add some measure of empathy for those in the black community that worry that their own children are at higher risk for violence or to be profiled. So what? Its true.

Sure. Zimmerman is entitled to a result compelled by a full and fair investigation, just as the family of the teenager is.

they are at a higher risk but it's mainly due to black on black crime...and dont hate me hate the statistics.

Note the far left hate machine is perfectly acceptable.

This. The double standard is truly amazing. Robert Byrd being a Klan member?? No problemo.... He (was) a Democrat. Trent Lott?? He's a Republican so of course any off handed comments he made are to be blown out of proportion and he must be drummed out of office.... Many other glaring examples but this one I immediately think of when the subject comes up....

Interestingly, the WH declined to comment on this very recently. Once public outrage grew and the protests start they jump in with comments. Nah, not political at all.

I'm sure this had nothing to do with it at all.

Trayvon Martin shooting: Black leaders press White House - Joseph Williams - POLITICO.com

It’s been a month since Trayvon Martin, the black 17-year-old Florida high school student, was shot dead by a neighborhood watchman in an incident that has sparked a national uproar. Now that the issue has exploded into the national press, African-American bloggers, commentators and their allies are calling on Obama to personally condemn the incident.

I saw earlier in the week Carney say no comment. But Obama was getting pressed about it by reporters. I am sure they scripted out what he was going to say and were ready for the question.

That's politics.

And, again, the base of the GOP, who were never going to vote for him, are going to make a mountain out of the mole hill comments. In the meantime, I imagine that his comments reassure the Martin family and the bitter community down here that even the President is paying attention.

Love this quote from Al Sharpton

Civil rights leader Al Sharpton helped lead a rally in Sanford, Fla. Thursday night attended by thousands who called for justice. Sharpton demanded Zimmerman's arrest.

"We cannot allow a precedent when a man can just kill one of us ... and then walk out with the murder weapon," Sharpton said, flanked by Martin's parents and a stage full of supporters. "We don't want good enough. We want George Zimmerman in court with handcuffs behind his back."

Hmmm, wonder what he means by us.

The thing I hate most is that race is involved at all. Facts don't change because of someone's race but race sure as hell seems to make a lot of people less interested in facts.

Speaking of which I ran across this:

He would not discuss it, but Pat Whitaker, chief of operations at the State Attorney's Office in Sanford, said Thursday night that the case's key evidence has not yet been made public.
"There's just so much more to it that has not been disclosed," he said. "What you have is not the crucial evidence."

I have no real idea what this might be but, and I'm purely speculating here, it might have something to do with ballistic forensics.

The OP simply suggested it was for political purposes and you labeled him part of the right wing hate machine.

Now you admit it's politics and it's clear there was political pressure for him to comment this way and connect to the black community.

So is the OP still right wing hate machinations?

Well, sure, in the sense that everything a POTUS utters is going to have a political aspect to it. That much is obvious. Plus, I agreed with your point that originally he wasn't going to say anything but so much attention paid to it at this point and so many questions to him he pretty much has to.

What I objected to was OP taking that one statement, totally out of context, and implying that Obama's comments were intended to exploit racial division. I think it clear, in context with his statements immediately after, that is not what is going on and its a shame that the hate machine latches onto that, and not the sentences before and after that make all the difference.

Why?

Because they don't want to acknowledge what he ACTUALLY said.

Here's the complete text, by the way:

Well, I'm the head of the executive branch, and the attorney general reports to me, so I've got to be careful about my statements to make sure that we're not impairing any investigation that's taking place right now.
But obviously, this is a tragedy. I can only imagine what these parents are going through. And when I think about this boy, I think about my own kids. And I think every parent in America should be able to understand why it is absolutely imperative that we investigate every aspect of this, and that everybody pulls together — federal, state and local — to figure out exactly how this tragedy happened.
So I'm glad that not only is the Justice Department looking into it, I understand now that the governor of the state of Florida has formed a task force to investigate what's taking place. I think all of us have to do some soul-searching to figure out how does something like this happen. And that means that examine the laws and the context for what happened, as well as the specifics of the incident.
But my main message is to the parents of Trayvon Martin. If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon. And I think they are right to expect that all of us as Americans are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves, and that we're going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened.

Come on ! It is incredibly misleading to leave out the part where he says we all just want to know what happened.
