Great Heisman Injustice?

Woodson won because a southern, SEC quarterback (Wuerffel) won the year before. End of discussion! :banghead:

So is USC exempt from that logic (3 out of past 4 winners including 2 QBs)?

I don't buy the Southern bias thing either. I think Woodson won because he had some high spots on National TV.

Exactly. The equation was simple. Woodson being great versus Penn State and Ohio State + Manning playing a mediocre game against Florida=The Heisman Trophy on its way to Ann Arbor.

There may or may not be a Southern bias, but some schools do get more consideration than others. Remember Chris Perry from Michigan a few years ago? I really don't think he was one of the nation's top five players.

I think a lot of times the Heisman is a self fulfilling prophecy. The media puts out their list at the beginning of the year and then spends the rest of the year justifying it.

When's the last time somebody came out of nowhere to win the Heisman?

Yeah, Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart pretty much had it sewn up before the season began.

I doubt may people had Jason White as their pick at the start of the '03 season. He hadn't made it through an entire season without a major injury of some sort.

Out of 70+ Heismans handed out, I think 7 have gone to SEC players. I'll definitely go for the "anti-SEC bias", because I have a heck of a time believing that the SEC is that inferior in either team or individuals compared to the rest of the country.

The interesting thing is that Champ Bailey put up substantially better numbers in 1998 than Charles Woodson (including on offense) and came in 7th in Heisman voting and never was a serious candidate.

The Heisman is something I've pretty much dimissed as being the Pac-10 and Big 10 toy, only loaning it out to another conference when there's someone who is so far beyond everyone else.

That's about as close to a surprise winner as there has been. You can look at the past winners and tell when it was a down year for big performances. Usually those are the years when loopy armed QBs win.

I just remember the media doing their best to justify voting for Woodson, especially Chris Fowler.

That's strange, considering Fowler voted for Manning. All Fowler did was properly characterize the ridiculous reaction of some Tennessee fans.

Being a part of an 8 win team that loses to Ga Tech will put a damper on just about anybody's Heisman candidacy.

Here we go . . . It wasn't THAT ridiculous. There were a lot of media members who thought the vote was nuts. I think it can be justified, but I think they probably got it wrong. I will grant you that some fans overreacted, but there are always going to be fans that go irrational.

There's a difference between vehemently disagreeing with the balloting and claiming a conspiracy involving ABC, ESPN, the CIA, NORAD, The Trilateral Commission, Clay Shaw, and Carlos Marcello.

On that point, I agree 100%. Don't get me started on the "ESPN hates us" crowd.

I'm not now or ever was particularly interested in what Fowler had to say, justified or not. I just know, and no Hat you can't change my opinion so save your breath, that Payton should have won. :twocents:

That's a perfectly reasonable opinion. I actually think any of four guys were deserving that year.

I don't know if I'd go THAT far... But the Heisman will pretty much inevitably end up in the hands of one of the 4-5 guys they mentioned at the beginning of the season. I think this same thing is practiced in lesser extent with team rankings.

What are you talking about? There is clearly a vast conspiracy to discredit the good name of UT football. We NEVER get good press. Ever. Especially from ESPN.

Other than complete homers like John Wilkerson and Jimmy Hyams, Ron Franklin and Mike Gottfried are the two biggest media shills for TCHFCATUTK.

IMO Franklin and Gottfried are pros. It's too bad they broke up that booth. They called games the way I wish everybody did.

I agree they're very good, even though I think age is starting to catch up with Gottfried. However, I also think the fact they like TCHFCATUTK is rather transparent.

I actually don't mind "homers", even if they are not Tennessee's. I'm a Tennessee fan not a Coach when I listen to a game. So when it is the Tennessee announcing team I want to listen to someone that agrees with me or at least shares my passion for Tennessee, I don't want to listen to a disertation on what is wrong with the program. If I want that I'll listen to ESPN,lol. :twocents:
