Great Vols from Knoxville

Maybe it is hard to be a superstar and still hang out with your old high school buddies?

He played for Alcoa, and wasn't a great Vol. Randall Cobb.

Chad Pennington from Knoxville but not a vol.

Penn State pulled a running back from Knoxville who was good Leroy something. Harris maybe? I don't have that name quite right.

Leroy Thompson

McKenzie twins from A-E both played at UT & in the NFL, back in the day.

Yeah, I never understood how penn state pulled him out of knoxville

Paterno & Sandusky maybe...ha ha? I remember some over here in W.TN. were pretty mad about Leroy Thompson going to Penn State & playing under Coach Paterno. Somebody with the talent like Leroy to give up a chance to play at home in front of 102,000 + screaming fans in Neyland Stadium & to play in the SEC was unbelievable to understand his motive for doing so. Did Leroy go on to play pro ball somewhere cause I don't "recall that"? :hi:

Yeah, I think he played 4-5 years in the nfl eith a couple of different teams. Wasn't a big star. Backup with steelers maybe? Or one of the upper eastern state teams

Preston Warren from Catholic went to UT and started in the defensive backfield.

Bruce Wilkerson was from Loudon and played on the O-line.

More emphasis on academics and less on football? Compare Knox County schools with those in Nashville, Chattanooga, or Memphis. They're leaps and bounds better in test scores.

Johnny Butler had the greatest run in UT history against Alabama in 1938. He's a knoxvillian

I don't know much about the Knoxville schools. Farragut was good back in the 80s. Austin-East cranks out great basketball teams. What are the other large public schools...Gibbs, Central, Powell, Karns...what else?

Is Catholic the only large private school?

I vote to throw a scholly at that Charlie King from CAK. He is really accurate.

Fulton just won a State championship (their 4th). Bearded has had some good f. Ball and BB teams.. CAK ( private school) just won a state champ. As did Webb who has one of the top Juniors in the State , former Vol Todd Kelly's son.. Hope the Vols can get him as he has already been offered by Bama.

Are you talking about Charlie High? he is not an SEC caliber QB.

Why does Knoxville not produce a lot of great players? Coaching? Facilities? Too many republicans who are soft...lol?

Facilities, at least in the more wealthy areas of the city, are fine, and the coaching here is very good. You won't find facilities like a high school in Texas or California would have, but they're usually adequate for the job they're supposed to do.

To be honest with you, I'm not sure why. Knoxville ends up producing a lot of guys who go to play college ball, but almost none of them end up playing at the FBS level.

Most of you do realize Knoxville is made up of a predominately Caucasian population, right?

Yeah...Charlie High. I know he is kinda short. Not a sec candidate?

He's listed at 6'1", but he's really like 5'11". Kid doesn't have an FBS offer.

One of his receivers is Davis Howell, who broke the national record for receptions in a career. He doesn't have a single college offer.
