I don't think you can pin it down to one.

For his style and genre, Chet Atkins is every bit as talented as Clapton. I'm biased because he was part of my favorite band, but Duane Allman is right up there too.

oh yeah, and I'm sure Aytch would agree that Mike McCready deserves mention

Along with the ones listed already, Ya gotta throw Jimi and SRV in there somewhere. Mark Knopfler. Les Paul. Carlos Santana. Hard to pick one. I can't.

^ If you're going to go with a shredder, Jason Becker is the only choice. IMO hands-down best raw talent to ever have lived. Twenty years since he's been diagnosed with Lou Gherig's and the speed and technique he had has yet to be matched.

He's my person favorite. Santana has one of the all-time great mixes of feel and skill, but his style is a bit narrow. Same goes for guys like Satch and Vai.

My final answer is a bit cliched but I can't really think of anyone else: Hendrix. Possibly the most revolutionary musician of the last hundred years.

Hendrix/Santana/Mark Knopfler(sultans of swing he kills it). Most innovative in making a guitar sound absolutely nothing like a guitar and more like something from a dj booth-Tom Morello.

It's a tough question, since the guitar is an incredibly versatile instrument and is capable of being used for a wide variety of genres.

You have your Satriani, Malmsteen, and Vai... they're fundamentally incredible, but there's really NO substance at all. It's just complicated music sheets.

You have your Stevie Ray, Robert Johnson, and BB King... great blend of soul, substance, and talent.

Then you have your innovators like Omar-Rodriguez Lopez, Robert Fripp, and Peter Banks. They're normally acquired tastes, but there's a nebulous cloud of awesome to be had there.

Then of course you have Jimmy Page, Hendrix, and Chuck Berry. They really speak for themselves, but they appear to be the perfect balance of everything one looks for in a great picker.

To me, the greatest guitarists are the ones whose sound you can recognize before you know that it's even them... guys like Mark Knopfler, David Gilmour, Brian May...
