Greatest guitarist of all time

Stevie Ray Vaughn or Jimmy Page or Slash.

Hendrix was the best live guitarist but not the best sound wise.

I'm not as well schooled on the older cats, but my votes go to Morello, Vai, EVH, Gilmour, SRV, Dimebag, Clapton, and Hendrix. Don't laugh, but John Mayer can play some stuff that I can't touch. I know he catches a lot of flack for his pop-trend, but break me off a little "Neon" or "Belief" and then we'll talk.

Dimebag? Really?

I was almost there the night he was shot. Friend had tickets but I was no longer that big a fan of either Pantera or him and passed.

Absolutely. "Vulgar Display" and "Far Beyond Driven" are, to me, the apex of heavy guitar perfection.

I know absolutely nothing about music or the skills it takes to play heavy so I'll take your word for it.

I just don't normally put all dimebag in there when I'm thinking of great riffs.

But who am I?

DImebag is possibly the best metal guitarist of all-time, anytime you can be considered the best in your particular genre, then you are up there.

There is no way to be defenitive in saying who is the best off all-time.

Guys like Pettrucci/Vai/Satch/Malmsteen will blow you away with their technical ability but their music is so emotionaly detatched that you get bored after a few songs.

You have to be innovative with enough technical ability to play with the best of them and enough thought into the music that you don't seem like a robot pounding out as many notes as you can.

Hendrix is probably the best as far as a total package is concerned, then again there can be fair arguments made for several guys.

Great topic. The greats have already been mentioned. Here are some contemporaries I like.

John Mayer - his guitar is almost an extension of his voice.

Keith Urban - Versatile musician with many stringed instruments - guitar, banjo, etc.

Brad Paisley - The guy can light it up with speed.
