Greatest guitarist of all time

Shortgame's top five in no particular order:

Al DiMeola
Adrian Belew
Steve Howe
Pat Metheny
Jimi Hendrix

HM:
Chet Atkins
Robert Fripp
Chango Rinehart(sp?)
Eric Clapton
Michael Hedges

I'm probably going to get trashed for saying this, but John Mayer. Maybe not the best ever, but he's in the conversation. I don't even really like his music, but dude is so talented. I saw a House of Blues ZZ Top concert where Slash and John Mayer did guest solos on the same song and I felt like Mayer ran circles around Slash (and I'm a long time GnR fan).

Just listened to Led Zep's Presence after many years of not hearing it.

It reinforces my opinion that J. Page has to be in the top grouping. Achilles Last Stand alone puts him up there. Inventive, skilled and emotional playing.

YouTube - Led Zeppelin - Achilles Last Stand (Album Version)

Probably Bonhams best album also. Hell, all of them are at the top of their game on this album - super tight.

No, he's not. There are guys you've never heard of that run circles around Slash on the guitar

Well maybe he just plays music I like well. Not a huge fan of Hendrix, Zeppelin, Clapton, or Mayer although they all play some stuff I like & I respect that they are great guitarists.

Too be fair that is more of Mayer's style then Slash's.

Guys you've never heard of that can run circles around your favorite players too.

Slash is a great lead guitarist, no question about it.

My opinion as well. His solos made a few songs by themselves. On a similar note check out a young dude on YouTube named Kobiba. Plays a lot of GNR stuff but some other stuff as well.

Not likely. I am pretty old compared to the rest of this forum. There are some guys than can run circles around a couple of my favorite players, but I've heard of them

I do buy the argument that some on here have made about being able to play the guitar well within a compositions versus just showing off your chops in a solo. In other words, what is the point of being a great guitarist, if you're not using that skill as a means to the greater end of making great songs? That question was rhetorical.

Jimmy Page.
