Greatest Plays in Vol History

Condredge Holloway ...

Ask any old graybeard in Orange PMS 151 who was around at the time about him ... and they'll smile.

He was a living highlight reel.

I found the entire ABC broadcast of the '74 UCLA game.

Great Day, what a time capsule.

They actually showed the POTSMB halftime show.

Kieth Jackson and Bob Devaney stumbling over Frank Manumaleuna's name.

Basically, everything you need to know about WHY Condredge Holloway is a Vol legend can be found in the period from 2:29:00 to 2:58.00 on the video.

That leap into the end zone, with @3:00 left was a leap into the hearts of the Tennessee faithful. Probably did more for race relations in the state of Tennessee than any piece of legislation, heartfelt speech, or demonstration since Reconstruction.

He was an outstanding baseball player and was actually recruited to play baseball at Tennessee. He found that football was his path, though.

After Tennessee he went on to a stellar career in the CFL. The NFL simply wasn't ready for a mobile black quarterback in 1974, he was drafted as a DB by New England - idiots. the Canucks had no such issues. Holloway led the Ottawa Rough Riders to the Grey Cup in 1976 and Toronto Argonaughts to the championship in 1983.

A true VFL, he returned to complete his BA degree at Tennessee, went into business for a while and finally joined Philip Fulmer's staff. From there he moved to the Athletics staff.

One last memory: After the 1999 Fiesta Bowl, there was a celebration held in Neyland Stadium complete with the band, cheerleaders and game highlights on the still under-construction Jumbo Tron.

The band formed the "T" and various members of the University staff and coaches ran through it. The largest ovation of the day came when Condredge Holloway ran through the T and chest-bumped with his wife.

Not a dry eye in the place.

In short, the "Artful Dodger," as Condredge was then called.

Although it wasn't a terribly lengthy touchdown run, Condredge escaped the clutches of virtually every Georgia Tech defender on this play. The Artful Dodger - Condredge Holloway - YouTube

As Lester McClain said much later, "Only in a cartoon [or comic book] can it happen like that."

Planet of the Apes (the real one) opened in Feb, 1968.

As I recall it was playing at the River Breeze.

Most of the best have been covered but I haven't seen Jeff Powell's run against Miami in the Sugar Bowl where Harry Galbreath pancaked Jerome Brown.

It was actually Bruce Wilkerson that pancaked Brown, though Galbreath delivered a key block on Winston Moss on that play.

I would say that Stephens to the house at Georgia would be one of the greatest. If we had been able to stop that next drive, he would of been serious heisman candidate that year. Jmo

Part of the "prevent the win" defense that was the downside of Chavis greatness. :pinch:

I haven't scanned through the entire thread but I thought Shaun Bryson's run up the middle in the 98' Florida game was pretty awesome.

Please don't take this the wrong way but, you know, I see and hear people talking about that hit a lot. And I personally don't think it was all that special or vicious. What made it a replay favorite was the sound of Berry's pads popping into KM's pads it seems to me. He was just about out of bounds and clearly was already slowing down. Berry came flying in at an angle and did pop him a good hit. But the SOUND of the hit was what the announcers immediately talked about during the relays. There must have been a TV mic nearby.

KM got right up, albeit a little slowly. It was a decent hit but, to me, just an average one for Berry.

That said...whatever works for you, brother!

I was sitting on the top row of the 3rd deck at that game and could hear that hit like I was on the sideline. Loudest hit I've ever heard.

One I haven't seen yet, Clausen to Banks hail mary right before halftime of the Florida game in '03.
