Greatest Plays in Vol History

...I personally don't think it was all that special or vicious. What made it a replay favorite was the sound of Berry's pads popping into KM's pads it seems to me. He was just about out of bounds and clearly was already slowing down. Berry came flying in at an angle and did pop him a good hit. But the SOUND of the hit was what the announcers immediately talked about during the relays. There must have been a TV mic nearby.

KM got right up, albeit a little slowly. It was a decent hit but, to me, just an average one for Berry.

Denmark,

You need to go back and watch the full play again, the commentary, the GA team reaction, and watch KM for at least 15 afterward. I know that I often forget or miscontrue plays from the past . You have several errors in your statements and you can get a memory refresher on YouTube.

CP's first TD against NC State was so exciting because I thought we were going to be good (lol) and knew right then he was a special player.

The Jabar Gaffney play would be my #1. Also up there would be Cory Anderson's fumble through the endzone in 05 against bama

What are some of your favorite individual plays made by the Vols? Not games, but the actual play itself. Here are some of mine:

Mike Terry's int against Bama in 1982
Tony Robinson going for 2 against Bama in 1984
Jeff Powell's TD run against Miami
Robinson's TD pass to McGee against Auburn in 1985
Dale Jones' int against Bama in 1985
Von Reeves TD pass against UF in 1990
Dale Carter's KO return against UF in 1990
Aaron Hayden's TD off a screen pass against ND in 1991
Jeremy Lincoln's "butt" block against ND in 1991
Shuler to Davis on 4th down against UGA in 1992
Manning to Kent 1st play against Bama in 1995
Grant's int vs UF in 1998
Witten outrunning Michigan's D on a TD in the Citrus Bowl

What are some of your favorite plays? I didn't list the Stoerner fumble because that was more of an error on his part.

Paul Naumoff hit on Larry Conska at 5 yard line in Gator Bowl in 1966..

Holloway to Seviers TD pass versus Vanderbilt in early
70s

Stephens screen pass TD versus Georgia in 2001

All of those Boca mentioned..

on-side kick recovered by Pickens in 1990 versus ND

Robinson 40 yard scramble versus Auburn in 1985

Dafney TD run on the "fumblerooskie" play versus Mississippi St in 1987

Clausen to Banks TD at the half versus Florida in 2003

Clausen to CJ Fayton on 4th and 19th versus Alabama in 2003

Mike Cofer batting ball out of Lewis hand for fumble in 1982 versus Alabama

These are great, here is another great individual performance (2 plays sorry)

2003 at defending national champ Miami

Derrick Tinsley scores on an end around to give Tennessee the lead 10-3 on 4th and goal with 20 seconds left in the first half....

Then Miami fumbles an amazing knuckleball Dustin Colquitt punt late in the 4th... recovered by.... Derrick Tinsley.

Add the 2006 LSU's Russell non-fumble fumble to the list on their game winning drive.

Im probably the only one old enough to remember this one.

Darin Miller knifes through on a blitz at the goal line and actually intercepts a pitch on a toss sweep and goes 95 yards for a TD against Iowa in the Kickoff Classic.

Nope I remember that one too... August 1987 IIRC played in NJ. That play changed the momentum of the game for sure.

College Football Retro Review: 1987 Kickoff Classic Tennessee Vs. Iowa | Bleacher Report

The Big Play: Darrin Miller's run is an All-time classic play in Volunteer History. It has some great play-by-play calls from both John Ward on UT radio and Keith Jackson on TV. It was voted as one of the plays of the year in college football. Extra credit goes to Vols DB Terry McDaniel who did a great job of getting in the way of the Iowa players slowing them down instead of throwing a block and maybe getting called for a clip. A great play all the way around and one of my favorites.

These threads are always a joke. The greatest part of the Tennessee tradition we talk so much about occurred between 1927 and 1952. That's when the guy we named the stadium after and whose maxims we use coached UT football. Yet, nobody on this board believes a great play was made prior to 19990.

"true fan"

i dont think most of us were around to see or hear any plays from that era. i dont think youre gonna recall anything you didnt see or hear.

Well...to be fair, all these plays have been made prior to the year 19990. :)

So many good plays on here!
Some I remember that I didn't see on here:

Mike Terry INT at the end of the 82 Bama game to seal the win
Carlton Peeples knocked down a Vandy pass in the end zone in 1979 to preserve the win. He hit it twice both times keeping it out of the Vandy WR hands!
Eric Gordon INT for a TD to win in OT vs Vandy in 2011
Deon Grant INT for a TD vs Auburn on their 1st play in 1999
Winning FG vs Iowa in 1987 Kickoff Classic in 1987
Blocked punt & ensuing TD vs Ga in 2013
Tippy toe catch by North vs Ga in 2013
Opening kickoff return for a TD vs Auburn in 1979
Bobby Graham Circus catch vs Memphis in 1999 set up winning TD!
CP TD vs NC State in ATL in 2012
Whitehead stop at the goal line to beat KY in 1988
2 point conversion by Tony Robinson vs Ala in 1984 to win it after Andre Creamer's punt return to set up the TD

I feel sorry for all the young Vol fans who don't remember Tennessee being good, but be patient...we're coming back & it will be so much fun!!! Imagine Neyland like it was last year vs Ga for every game!

There was a play that I can clearly visualize but can't recall precisely when it happened. Perhaps you guys can identify it based on my description. I am almost positive that it occurred in the early '90s (most likely Shuler's last year or Peyton's first) and that it took place within the context of a bowl game. In any event, it was a long pass, beautifully thrown, close to the sideline at the top of the screen. Our receiver made an incredible, finger-tip catch, one in which he dived as far as he could stretch out and caught the ball in a position that was parallel to both the playing field and the sideline. It was not a scoring play but set us up in scoring position at or inside the opponent's 20. I somehow think the receiver might have been Craig Faulkner.

I will be interested to see if any of you can identify this play based on these clues.
It was Manning to Kent during Manning's freshman year in the bowl game vs Virginia Tech.

Everything I was going to mention is already in here, so I'll just add the North catch last year against USCe.

Not one play but a whole gut bustin game...Curt Watson going for 197 in 1969 against GA between the hedges in the mud, the blood and the beer.
