Gregg Doyel Rips Noah.

Its the same old story that everyone at the top is eventually going to be knocked down by someone. The question is how you respond. Some would say that Noah ahs responded poorly and that, instead of being more reserved and tempered in his comments, he has reacted by becoming more brash if not insenstive.

Did you know that Noah initially said he did not want to go to see President Bush after the '06 win because he disagreed with his policies? Some people would say that he showed some principle. Others would say he is grandstanding.

Personally, I think he showed at least some awareness.

That was Doyle's point. Noah used to have very well thought out ideas and responses. Now he sounds like a cliche

Based on this and what Doyel has documented, I don't think these incidents show awareness, per se. I think they show somebody who has some deep-seated insecurities and just likes to stir things up no reason.

My two cents...

I think it shows a kid who would wants to mix sports and politics. Not a good idea.

Granted, I rarely think of athletes when I think of great political thinkers. Its not that I agree or disagree. I'm just saying at least he is conscious of it. I would venture to say that half of the players in Division I cannot name for you the Vice President of the United States, point to Iraq (within 1000 miles), or discuss any other topic of the day with any perspective at all.

Its not what he says, its that he's thinking about it at all that impresses me at least a little bit.

That is both racist and stupid.

Impressed with what? That he can read a newspaper or that he might stumble back-assward upon a point of view on a campus. That's impressive because you believe the rest of the college sports world to be brain dead? Qualifying his comments by comparing them to what cows might say would show him to be genius on a relative basis as well, but impressive is a long way from there.

Give us a freakin' break with that crap. Do you honestly think people would destest him any less for his antics if he was playing for Florida State? He wouldn't be in the limelight as much obviously, but what people did see of him, you think they'd like him?

The Dixie Chicks think about global political issues, as do Kanye West and Richard Dreyfus, yet that alone doesn't impress me.

The problem I see with Noah is that, like so many celebrities that have "transcended" their genre, is that the media attention focused on him gives the impression to both he and the public that he is supposed to be more than a star in his field. The public feeds off of cheerleader swipes and dance moves and the state of the world as analyzed by a junior in college. He, in turn, fuels the frenzy by pushing further.

There is no basis for you to call me racist and I insist that you apologize, and publicly.

Just because a large number of the players I'm talking about are African-American does not mean that I am saying that the reason they do not know those things is because they are African-American. That is really awful logic and you know better.

I'm saying athletes in general don't know it and particularly at that age. In fact, to tell you the truth, I imagine that less than half of all MLB players know who the VP is. Heck, I would guess that 20 percent of the people on the street don't know it, either.

Again, hat, that was really uncalled for and you should take that back. I said nothing racist and really am offended by your comment.

Tough, don't make ignorant, inherently bigoted comments and I won't call you on them.

Hey, I finally agree with LG on something.

I think you are the racist for assuming that my comment was based on their race.

At any rate, until you apologize you are persona non grata in my view. And before you say it I know you don't care. I post all in good fun and was just defending a guy on my school's team, complimenting him for his being concerned about the world and you turned that into something ugly.

You are wrong. You know it. Admit it. Apologize.

I disagree that comments by themselves are inherently bigoted
OK, then I think only about 20% of Christians have the intellectual capability of a rhesus monkey. Mind you, I'm not saying that because of their religious beliefs. I guess that comment has no inherent bigotry.

Let me rephrase - LG's comments were not inherently racist or bigoted - you chose to make the assumption he was linking it to race.

Where did I say that half of black college athletes don't know who the VP is? I said that half of the athletes at that level in that sport in general don't. You are the one who imprinted "black" on my statement.

Seriously, I think a lot of you but you made your comment in haste and I'd like to move on. But I do feel the need to hear the words so if you'll just humor me and at least acknoledge that you might have misinterpreted what I said, that would be great and I would personally appreciate it.

Not a hard connection to draw when the vast majority of people he was talking about are African-American.

LG wouldn't get any such benefit of the doubt from the modern PC crowd. Why should he get it here?

I never made that connection and would imagine many others would not.

Thanks for being the thought police for us all :good!:
