Ground to make up on GA

Ground to make up. So I went back and looked at the recruiting classes for the SEC East since 2014. Table attached with ranking and associated pts. I also projected out for 2018. Now hopefully we close strong. But lets say we finish with the #17 class. Looking at that average points will be around 2030. So So looking at that combined average over the 5 year period we can see just how many point separate us and GA per year, 402 for 17.5%. Did not have time to do the additional math, so how many extra 4 and 5 stars do we need to sign to make that difference up and how many years is that going to take? We’d better have BETTER coaching. On average, we ain’t going to out-talent GA.

As soon as Jones was fired, the season was finished and the other coaches were no longer employed (save Coach G), we had better coaching. I’m betting Pruitt and his crew are gonna prove to be light years better at coaching and developing players than Jones and his....

Yeah... because it was a long time ago that they pretty much stank it up, right?

If Pruitt can coach... UT will compete. If he can't, I HOPE Vol fans learned their lesson with Jones.

YOU CANNOT KEEP A BAD COACH.

You have to recognize it if he isn't recruiting well or has issues developing and coaching up talent. UT has to be as ruthless about it as UF was with McElwain. The "Awe give him more time" attitude has to die.

Pruitt should get 3 or at the very most 4 years to prove he can build a program and coach it.

I’m very excited about and pleased with the Pruitt hire and am ready to support him 1000%. With regards to your last sentence, I agree. That said though, we’ll know by/after year 2 if he’s the guy.

This was for this year so the gap will be larger as it doesn’t include the 2018 classes but this is the best calculator, it accounts for attrition and only counts who is on the team, 247 team talent has TN 12th this year.

2017 College Football Team Talent Composite

Thank you so much for this link! Every year, I waste time going through rosters and compiling on a spreadsheet all of the SEC teams' current players and their recruiting average value to come up with the actual recruited talent that each team has. I do this because simply taking averages of recruiting class rankings doesn't account for attrition, and can be skewed by classes ranked highly because of large numbers of signees.

What 247 has done here is *absolutely* the correct way to compare the talent that coaches have to work with. I no longer have to do this, and will no longer curse Rivals, Scout, etc for not doing this. Kudos to 247 for compiling this data, and thank you for bringing it to my awareness! :good!::dance2:

If Pruitt can coach (unlike Jones) then UT has enough talent to compete and has enough recruiting strength to close whatever gap there is.

The key is what Pruitt himself said. Worry about the ones you have and not the ones you don't have. We'll know pretty quick.

Agree, but I do think it might be slightly more of an uphill climb for Pruitt than Smart. Smart inherited a 10 win team, Pruitt a 4 win team that was last in the SEC. Talent on this team far outweighed that record but Smart didn’t have to improve the talent to win at UGA, it was there already. TN needs a few more pieces to be a contender but you can bet Pruitt will flip that room, and quickly. His first two classes will be very good but I’d advise patience for those freshmen to grow. I don’t think the talent at Tn now can match two years from now, Pruitt’s main focus will be recruiting. Top 3 in the SEC in recruiting next year.

According to this, Dawgs should handle OU... but Mayfield can pull some sh*t out of his azz.

Mayfield has actually won a game in the playoffs if I’m not mistaken hard to remember lol but still Georgia is the new guy in that group of 4 everyone else has been there before not to mention the fact he’s a true freshman

I’m hoping Fromm is overwhelmed and gets uga sent home early but even if they beat OU then he has Clemson or Bama defense waiting for him

Fact is we need Georgia to severely under perform to win the East again. They will almost always have more talent than us. And then we have to play Bama every year on top of that...

Life as a Vol fan for ya. Always behind the 8 ball.

Won't know or a few years, but it looks pretty damned good from where I sit. Had dinner with some dawg fans last night and they're on cloud nine. Title shot and a likely #1 class. Hard to argue.

Which will make our gridiron conquest over them that much sweeter.

Mayfield lost in the first round the only year OU has made the playoffs (2015, when we should have beat him in Neyland)

It’s going to take a few years to catch them. If we end up okay recruiting this year and can get a top 10 class in 19, maybe we can compete with them in 20.

I'll leave it like this......

And I'll put it in not so eloquent terms.

It's clear that Georgia has their **** together. They're doing their job. Good for them.

The question is does Florida have their **** together? Does Tennessee have its **** together? If they do, they'll be able to go out and compete. Some years, they'll win. Some years, they won't.

If they (Florida and Tennessee) don't, then they are going to get their *** handed to them on a tray and the tray will be bent.

Throughout this period of inferior football, the problem hasn't been what other teams are doing. It's what my team isn't doing.

I'm not concerned about how many 5 stars another team is signing when my team is so inept they can't complete a forward pass.

Good pickup on Emory Jones. I strongly disagree with Luginbill, he thinks he will be moved to Safety in college. His accuracy is bad but it’s footwork if you watch his film, very correctable. Pruitt needs to finish strong where the gap doesn’t become a canyon. Currently, Ga has 11 players ranked higher than Tn’s highest signed and every prospect they are looking at for the last 4 spots are higher as well. Sounds bad but it’s almost the same for Bama except for one guy. GA has 8 more highly ranked than their 2nd highest.

That said, 2019 is huge in Tn, 18 kids in Tn are ranked a 4 star, double the norm from a few years ago. Ga has 41 4-stars in 2019, Fla has 50! Gheesh, no reason for the East not to rebound, 2019 is full of talent in all 3 states and all 3 will be top 10 if not top 5.

UGA is in a prime position with this recruiting class. If you look at 2019 recruits, they have a number of highly rated guys already commited as well.

They're in the NFP, and if you look at their schedule next year it is embarrassingly easy.

That said, we've had good recruiting classes recently who haven't reached potential because of bad coaching. Hopefully Pruitt and co can tap into that.

Not to mention it remains to be seen how UGA responds to losing their upper classmen as well as a few assistant coaches to UT.

Georgia losses a couple of all time SEC backs. they also are very likely to lose one of if not the best defensive players in the SEC this year in Smith. Those 2 tall skinny OLD weren't anything special, neither was that Sr CB. That frosh RB they had looked very good, actually better than Chubb at times, frosh RB make big spashes in college every year, they have 2 coming. McGee and Pittman were the top 2 recruiters in the country this cycle, Pittman has said this is his last rodeo, McGee may leave but it won't be to come here, he is an AU guy. We hired Sherrer away, who's group was the most underwhelming group on their defense, I hope Pruitt hired him on merit instead of hiring his buddy. but do you not think it is a little odd that UGA didn't try to keep him at all, no attempt what so ever, Kirby fired Rocker because he wouldn't recruit as hard as Kirby wanted him to, and guess what, thier DL was the most improved unit on their defense this year. I am just concerned Pruitt is hiring a staff he is friends with instead of the best he can get.

UGA is beginning to look like an automatic loss every year like UF, and bama.

Whaaaat? The Gators are not an automatic loss every year. We barely even lost this year (remember the hail mary they got?)

Plus they sucked just as bad as us this year. Gators fans down here are seriously far less optimistic about their team than you are.

"Worry about the ones you get not the ones you don't." Let's see what Pruitt can do with our current team and all the guys we sign this year. We have experienced talented players, we just need the coaches to put them in the right opportunity to showcase their skills and win some game

An understandable concern, but don't forget that people working together need to be able to get along, have similar goals and methods of meeting those goals, and mesh well together. If someone can't stand their boss they're less likely to try hard.

We'll be picked to finish no better than 4th in the east next year. However we took SC and KY to wire. I predict we win 3 of 4 from SEC least (Vandy, SC, KY, Mizzou). Another 3 of 4 from non conf. So min 6 wins... but I think we surprise FL or Auburn to get to 7 wins. Sadly GA could still win east at 10-2/9-3.

Wait. So Ga "always" out talents us and is an automatic loss...but didn't we beat them two years in a row before last year ? With less talent supposedly? Yep. I think we did.
