Gruden Over-rated / Jones Under-rated

I can't see Jones winning over top recruits since he will be going against the likes of Saban, Spurrier, Miles and Richt. Time will tell at the time of LOI signings.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have our first negative post. We're getting better - it took almost two full pages to happen. :lolabove:

Kids like to be part of something new, something that will help create their own legacy. Lately, students have followed the legacy that others created at Bama and LSU. Most great players go there because they want to succeed and they know they can succeed there. However, they would probably rather succeed somewhere else because they can receive more credit and not be in the shadows of those before them. They only turn down programs like UT because they don't believe they can create their own legacy at that school. That's because they don't believe in the person that's selling it to them. Jones is the guy that will give them the confidence they need to take that leap of faith and start their own legacy here at UT. He will use their pride and "following the crowd" as ammunition to draw many of them away from the likes of Bama and LSU.

4 and 5 star players!! That's the deal with Gruden!

What makes you think Gruden has what it takes to recruit?

Do you think he can be bothered to traveling around the country to the living rooms of high school kids and their parents to convince them that his only concern will be their best interests?

There is absolutely nothing that shows me Gruden could be successful on a college level other than message board pipe dreams, but what I did see, is a guy who doesn't have the drive or desire to do anything other than he is doing right now.

Kids also like to go to schools that win numerous games and have an opportunity to compete for conference and national titles. The kids we are recruiting today don't remember the glory days at UT, that is a huge obstacle without mentioning 6 of the top 10 schools are in the SEC.

Gruden would have been a rockstar on recruiting. However so far I'm excited about Jones. Sounds like he is very motivated a lot like Gruden. I think Jones is a winner and if he can recruit we will be OK.

You have nothing to base this on. A name only goes so far.

Gruden has now become a larger than life brand. I wanted him but he would have likely overshadowed the team. Would that have been good or bad? I don't know.

Hopefully Jones can coach up and get us back to winning.

You are 100% right. What are we thinking? What kid would ever want to come to the University of Tennessee, wear orange, run through the T, and play in Neyland Stadium in from of 100,000+ screaming fans. :mf_surrender:

It is all history now! Get over it and move on! It's boring and narrow-minded for anybody to keep bringing it up!

Gruden totally irrelevant now,(perhaps forever) not sure why his name is even mentioned on the board any longer.

Those things are what we have been trying to sell to kids for a long time. It has not really worked out to well the past few years. The biggest thing we need to push to kids is winning, win games and recruiting takes care of itself given our facilities and fan base.

One of CBJ statements that has stuck with me was something like (paraphrased) "we want to build champions off the field first and that will follow them onto the field." I agree with this philosophy. Quality effort in all facets of life will result in quality of outcome on the field. I want the Vols to win NCs but not at any cost. I'd rather support a team that is 9 and 3 but does it with quality. Let's come together as fans and support this guy and the team 100%!

You realize that your above statement could be true AND Gruden still be a FAAAAR better coach than Jones.

You state one obvious outcome. I simply believe my words - that many placed too much stock in Gruden and have not given Jones a chance from the start. We may never find out how good of a college coach Gruden might be but I, for one, am pleased with what I am learning about Jones this morning. IMNSHO Jones will outperform the expectations of many on this board. I am also beginning to see VolNation fans starting to come back together and am sensing excitement for the program. GBO.

Butch will be the better college coach in my opinion. Gruden didn't want us and Butch wanted us, so let's support him and move on from our man crushes of Gruden.

I've seen people try to say this (only since the hire, of course), and would just like to say that it's perhaps the most obviously homerish statement I've ever seen.

You're questioning the "drive" of a guy who wakes up at 3:17 every morning to watch film as an ANALYST?

Okay.

This is such an obvious "we didn't want him anyway" thread that it would be funny if it weren't so pathetic.

Not at all. I had no strong feeling about Gruden either way - except that I was of the opinion that many - for some reason - had expectations that he was the "chosen one". Look - just go back and look at all the "pathetic" posts about Gruden coming. And, all the "pathetic" posts questioning Jones already. I was simply stating what I believed to be true and to seek the thoughts of others. Now I know yours - thanks for playing.

Funny how people only start saying that they "believe this to be true" after Jones is hired as UT's next coach.

How could I state what I believed about the Jones hire before the Jones hire? I'm struggling with this. I'm going to have another cup of coffee, shoot some hoops with the boy, and come back after I've cleared my head. Trying to converse with some on this board is like... like... well its like :banghead2:
