Gruden Over-rated / Jones Under-rated

This thread means we not only have a mediocre program, but a mediocre fanbase...

I've seen people try to say this (only since the hire, of course), and would just like to say that it's perhaps the most obviously homerish statement I've ever seen.

Thank you.

All the sanctimonious "I can love Butch more than you!" running through the board is like Pavlov ringing a bell. Let's not pretend everyone was ready to make the coach and staff that Dooley beat Head Coach at the University of Tennessee.

I hope Butch kicks ass and takes names. I think he might. If he does so on the recruiting trail over the next month, that will be a great start.

Ive said it in a previous post. I think Jon Gruden and the bs around him has done far more harm to UT football than he ever will good.

I was one of many wanting Gruden but im glad we wound up with Jones.

If Jon Gruden would have came here this and many other forums would have been full of so much smack talk towards other teams it would be pathetic. Then when those teams beat us it would have all came back in our faces.

Listening to Gruden, he seemed like the East Coast version of Lane Kiffin, though "maybe" a little brighter.

Funny how people only start saying that they "believe this to be true" after Jones is hired as UT's next coach.

I'm more than willing to give the guy every chance to prove he can continue what he did at Cincy, but the transformation of this board in the last 36 hours is beyond amazing.

Yesterday morning VN was in meltdown and tonight you've got people booking 2 NCs while he is here. It's amazing what a press conference and a couple of videos can do.

Same thing happened with Dooley. It's because after the way the last few years have played out, Tennessee fans are desperate for any positive sign to hold onto. Unfortunately, I don't think Jones is the guy to turn things around.

How does this thread equate to a mediocre program and fan base?

What? Are you actually trying to evoke a rational argument on VN? I was initially a Gruden fan, but that was before I met "the man", Coach Jones, a teacher and coach of young men both on and off the field. I am glad we have him and would not trade him now for 2 Grudens, if I could.

And this is "rational?" Sigh.

Translation: I liked Gruden, but when Butch Jones was hired as our coach, I decided he was the greatest coach on Earth.

Gruden would have been a homerun to start but if he would have taken the UT job we would have had to match an offer from an nfl team soon .Gruden would not have stayed for 5 years then we would have been searching again,he would have had players switching there committs to UT but in long run it would have hurt us worse

And you wonder why other fan bases call UT fans delusional.

Ok, he'll suck and we'll be mediocre again. That what you want to hear my friend? Believing in someone is not delusional. It's a heck of a lot better than being a pessimist.

Gruden would have been immediate impact for good for UT and bad for our enemies. Could he have won here? The answer is yes and that's because he wanted an absolutely great staff around him as well. The problem was what would it cost and how long might he stay. In the end I hope UT has lucked into a great coach and Jon kicks butt in the NFL.
