Jon Gruden, Jon Gruden, Jon Gruden, Jon Gruden and Jon Gruden. If the next Vol coach isn’t Jon Gruden, a lot of orange-clad folks are going to be awfully upset. According to our sources, they’d better prepare to be upset.

Despite a remarkable series of “it’s a done deal” rumors, Gruden has always been a longshot to leave the ESPN announcing booth, bypass possible NFL openings, and land in the college game for the first time in 20 years. Last week, we reported that Gruden’s monetary demands had dropped a tad and that that had brought his status back into play, but by week’s end one source close to the UT situation told us the deal was “as dead as Marley’s ghost.”

Interestingly, Tennessee AD Dave Hart seems to believe that he can land a big-name coach for Tennessee. He has ties to Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops who is believed to be tiring of hard-to-satisfy Oklahoma fans. As we’ve said regarding Georgia’s Mark Richt, once a coach serves at a place for a decade, it’s probably time to start looking elsewhere, but rarely do coaches actually do that. Which is why veteran coaches usually get run out of town as soon as there’s a downturn (ask Tommy Tuberville or Phillip Fulmer).

With Stoops making $4.5 million, it’s doubtful UT can land him. Hart also has ties to Florida State’s Fisher who was hired as the Seminoles’ coach-in-waiting while Hart was AD in Tallahassee. Fisher makes $2.7 million and UT has the cash to give him quite a bump. But would he leave a rolling program in an easy conference — yes, we know he’s not thrilled with the ACC — for a fixer-upper in the world’s toughest conference? Unlikely.

Fallback candidates appear to be Miami’s Al Golden, Louisville’s Charlie Strong (who hasn’t helped his cause with two straight losses to Syracuse and UConn), and possibly Jones from Cincinnati.

In terms of the hire, it's now moving time. Dave Hart will be an army of one (the way he likes to roll) in whittling down this long list of candidates to 3. From there the big time boosters are going to take over. So, here's the deal.

Jon Gruden is not dead despite what people say. He is off the side for now while UT explores what else is out there. I believe Tennessee's big $$$ heard things from NFL people that spooked them and this lead them to put him off to the side for now.

So, Gruden is not done imo. Hart will whittle the long list of names we've all seen down to 3 and at that point I believe the big $$$ folks will have a decision to make, Gruden or what's left. Who knows?

Anybody who tells you that there's a press conference on this day or that day is lying. Nothing is pending with anybody.

I've been consistent with this situation on Gruden. Yes. UT made a run at him in the past several months. And yes they talked it out. And yes, he's interested in the job. In fact, sources tell me that Gruden has softened his demands twice in the past couple of weeks. So, I don't believe this is about Gruden not wanting the job. Right now, I believe this is about UT wanting to see what else is out there.

They were all talking about it while i was on a call then went into a meeting. I overheard something about "tomorrow" and an announcement but do not know the context or who they heard that from. Those i work for do not get hung up in the rumor mill and none of them even know what vn is. They are where i draw my confidence from, this board only reinforces it.

One of the 5 boosters heavily involved in brokering the deal told my boss that he has cancelled his out of town trip for this week to help finish this up and to definitely plan on publicly knowing one way or the other by friday. He said he thinks it will get finalized today and could possibly announce as early as tomorrow. My boss said his money is on tomorrow given the tone of the conversation. The reason he called my boss is he was supposed to go on the trip too, and leave tomorrow. Part of the excitement i saw was the impending announcement but part was a trip getting cancelled a day before leaving.

Either way it shows the $$$ still thinks this is happening, and i hope they are right!

Just got a call... Gruden not doing MNF tonight...presser tonight or tomorrow.

Hold your breath boys!

I'm serious...from inside Ath Dept so we will see at 8:00. I much prefer rumors/tips that are proven or not in under 4 hours.

104.5 saying now that they are hearing Dilfer might be in the booth and that Gruden could not be calling the game tonight from what they have heard on twitter and the Mayor made a phone call on air and Blaine said he was smiling...this aligns with bcarter98's news and timeline if true, we shall know shortly Vol fans. GBO.

"Ok boys I'm not pulling your leg. My pledge brother at UT has a very good source: both his mother and father are very successful lawyers in the Nashville area and one of his parents represents a Haslam. Also, his uncle is a "Top 10 booster" (in his words), and has been informed that we have Gruden in the bag. Just passing along info I hear... trust me when I say this kid has info... they are loaded."

I'll give ya this nugget. Saban told a member of Alabama Power that Gruden had asked him permission to speak to one of coaches on his staff about coming to TN. (He wasn't sure which one but thought it might be strength coach).

Apparently he was told by someone in the ad to wait a "couple days" before making his decision. I got a little more confident hearing that.

Also confirmed the players and their families are just as in the dark as we are with regards to ad info. There was no meeting today and they have not been told gruden is coming or anything of the sort.

The sports director of WJHL TV / channel 11 in the Tri_Cities just reported the sticking point with Jon Gruden is that Gruden wants to have an AD role, in addition to the HC position, and Dave Hart will not go for this. (If true, I support DH ). He also said Stoops had been contacted to gauge his potential interest, and Stoops supposedly said he is happy @ OU. TIFWIW, no inside sources, just quoting verbatim.

Rainman on 560 (radio) in Memphis, this afternoon, says he has been told Gruden to UT. Probably this week. FWIW he is not a UT fan at all, loves Memphis.

Gruden is in Philly calling the game tonight. ESPN has already shown him and Tirico talking about it live.
