Guitar Greats

Props to whoever mentioned Eric Johnson. Django Reinhart does some good stuff, too.

Steve Vai and Joe Satriani are tops with experimental styles, great stuff.

And Kirk Hammett is a joke.

Jack White because the sound and energy of his guitar.

And I've recently started on ZZ Top, and their riffs are great.

George Lynch.......his work with Badlands while shortlived was better than his work with Dokken and that was pretty good stuff.

As a guitarist and musician myself, I'm a little biased. When I think of "Greats," I lean heavily toward those that I have the hardest time emulating. Here's my cursory list of "virtuosos":

Steve Vai - you can't play it because he reinvented the guitar. Literally. Do some research.
Joe Satriani
Yngwie Malmsteen
Eddie Van Halen
Jimi Hendrix

These guys are awesome, too, just a little more replicable:

Clapton
BB King
Dave Matthews
Page
Harrison
Gilmour
Allen Collins (Skynyrd)
Petrucci (Dream Theater - don't care much for it, but he's ridiculous good)
Tom Morello (Rage)

There. That's a start!

Not a bad list. Have seen Hendrix play live, and I love his show, but it's just that. Eric Clapton is a maestro to match any other. He can play any format. He proved that to me when I watched a Johnny Cash tv show back in the 70's when his guests were Chet Atkins and Eric Clapton. Clapton can play country, rock, blues or whatever ya want as good as anybody.

Jeff Healey

If I remember nothing else about the movie "Roadhouse" it'll be Jeff Healy.
