Guitar Greats

I don't know if any of you know Monte Montgomery, but he's probably the best guitar player out there in my opinion. He plays an acoustic and runs it through the normal electric guitar effects rig, it sounds crazy and he's amazing. Check him out.

Just a few that I have not seen mentioned

Pete Townsend
David Gilmour
Jeff Beck
Albert King
Leo Kottke

I've listened to nothing but Buckethead for the last month. I can't believe it took me this long to discover him. Awesome

Is this the same guy that "filled in" for Slash in GnR during one of those MTV awards? I swear I remember a guy with a KFC bucket on his head then.

Jimi is still the man! His favorite guitarist was Billy Gibbons.

Gotta love the first man to use power chords in a recording Link Wray. Herman Li is actually really sloppy thats why he's heavy on the effects it drowns out the mistakes. Kirk Hammett is sometimes the same way but its not because of mistakes and he's not very versatile. Yngwie isn't really a great musician he can just run through scales at light speed.

My favorite nowadays is Jeff Loomis from Nevermore. I really like his new solo album Zero Order Phase. His sweeps are just about impossible.

alex lifeson, leo kottke, sam bush (mandoline), lindsey buckingham, more to come when i have time to really think about the question.

SRV...Stevie Ray Vaughan. Period.

I can go with that - one of my fav blues tunes is "The Sky is Crying". Also like "Texas Flood".

Anyone ever heard of Jay Wood? Awesome player, specially slide style. Also Mac Partain and Adam Graybeal of the Nomadz.

Just read through all these posts, some very interesting posts.

Guys like Vai and Satch Boogie are on another level but their music lack emotion to me and gets boring quickly.

My favs of all-time go...

Hendrix-Reason I started playing.
Slash-I love his style. You know you are listening to Slash by hearing only a few notes.
John Mayer-He is an amazing guitarist, continues to get better IMO.
SRV-Ever watch SRV live? He hit every single note to perfection, Live at Austin City Limits was unreal.

Tom Morello is a decent player, nothing more, hence the effects and the use of drop-D tuning.

Hammett was told what to play by James for the better part of his career, nothing to write home about, you heard one solo you heard them all. Whoever said he was the most copied lead guitarists ever told one helluva joke.

Only one person mentioned Wylde and Dimebag, two best ever in the heavy metal genre IMO.

Whoever mentioned Eric Johnson know what they are talking about.

David Gilmour gets only one mention?

I will throw in a few wild card players...Kim Thayil of Soundgarden and Stone Gossard/Mike McCready of Pearl Jam.

So I seen Brewter's Millions last night at the Tin Roof ( Brewter's Millions has 2 members of Down from Up, Andy and Matt ) and they were the best cover band I have ever seen.

I have seen Down from Up a few times but have forgotten just how good Andy Wood is, I knew he was amazing but my God.

They payed a version of "Little Wing" that sounded like Hendrix/SRV/Van Halen had a baby, it was nuts.

Just thought I would give Andy a mention.

what do they play? originals .. covers .. classic or new rock ..

Down from Up is an original band that Andy Wood and Matt Brewster are in, very good band by the way.

Brewter's Millions is their cover band.

They can play anything.

They played Hendrix/RHCP/Rage/Sublime/GNR/Tool/Zepp...you name it.

This one dude came up while Andy was doing a solo, he started playing air guitar, he was wearing a Dwight Yoakam t-shirt, when they were done with that song they played "1,000 miles from nowhere".

Not sure how often they play as BM...Mitch from 94.3 the X and Trixie's husband share a birthday and have a birthday bash every year, got them to play it this year.

So there's 2 members of the original band playing in there own cover band?
