Gus' Fried Chicken

Yeah. I rarely get to that Nippers Corner area and it seemed like it was shut down almost as soon as I noticed it.

I've stood in line at the one in Memphis and while it's okay fried chicken it's no more worth the wait than the breakfast at Pancake Pantry.

Yeah, when I was younger and had the time I would wait in that God awful line at the Pantry. Now I just drive on by.

The hot chicken place at Nipper's Corner is still Gus's, they just rebranded it as Louisiana style hot chicken for some reason.

Didn't know that. I'll have to drop by then.

They probably renamed it because Nashville hates everything Memphis and vice versa.

I had a disagreement with a friend from Memphis earlier today about hot chicken. They need to learn that we can coexist.

I like Mendenhall better because the chicken seems to be better. I live in Collierville and like that location, but the chicken always seems to be over cooked and not as juicy.

And yes, I will say that Gus' is the best I've ever had.

I may need to try the Mendenhall location. I'm a newer Memphis resident and have given the downtown location a couple of tries as well as the new Southaven location. Each time I thought the food was average, especially based on what I had been told about it before trying.

I'm determined to obtain this life-changing chicken.

Definately try the Mendenhall location. And then go try a piece of cake at Bogies Deli across the street.

Or go to Gibson's for a hot donut. After the chicken and donuts, then you can go run a 10k to feel better.

The chicken isn't for everyone. I don't eat nearly as much fried chicken for health reasons, but I used to eat a lot. I can't say that Gus' is the absolute best I have ever had, but it is up there for me.

Edit: Well, damn. I am either really slow or didn't read far enough. I got Volz'd. I promise I hadn't read it.

Is it better than Hattie B's in Nashville?

I like Hot Hattie B's... I just think the name of the place is a little gimmicky. I mean, is there a real person name Hattie B that inspired the chicken or did they just come up with the name as a marketing gimmick to paint a picture in your mind of some Aunt Jemima character rolling up and frying some chicken on a hot Sunday afternoon after church?

hell, for that matter, is there a real person named "Gus" that the chicken was inspired by?

I'm just saying.

If you read the history on their website, it was originally not named Gus's. But the original owners had a son who took over the business. His nickname was Gus. The business has been around since the 50's.
