Had lunch with Kirk Herbstreit last week

The thing I hate most about Kirkstreit and the other latter-day pundits is that they behave as if they've never heard of General Robert Neyland and give him no respect whatsoever, even in a historical perspective. They seem to have no clue about Tennessee's glory days prior to '98.

Optimistic 2X = calling for wins in Norman and Athens. I am afraid I am infected with realism vs that type of optimism. That said, I would be overjoyed with one of those upsets and it would place us #1 on SportsCenter that night. GBO. Herbstreit is my favorite analyst. Rece Davis would be #2 followed by Mark May. Worst = Lou Holtz.

I agree, but this is a 'what have you done lately' society. It's been a rough stretch the last few years, and until we are playing for conf. championships, back in major bowl games and winning them, outside of VolNation, we're not going to get the type of respect we're looking for.

I find it amazing that Hart's 10th choice on his list of potential head coachs at U.T. will actually turn out to be the best one.
I, for one, was freaking out when no "Big named" coach was really interested in the position or Hart was not interested in the few "Big Named" coachs who were interested.
I thought "here we go again"

I still think we dodged a huge bullet with Charlie Strong and a couple of other wanted coaches....just like Saban wasn't even Bama's first choice (who remembers that fiasco) but it turned out ok for them....so in the coaching searches sometimes be careful what you wish for....

yeah Kirk is a good guy...very personable and down to earth...not many "talents" on broadcast that I would say I "like" but Kirk would be one...

UT hasn't been relevant since 2001 but we played in the SECCG in 2004 & 2007. WTF!

And were ranked in top 10 numerous times between 2001 and 2007! Bamer was down longer and were much worse than we have been. They always love to exaggerate! Cowherd said bama would never be good again! Lol!

Just because you make it to the occasional conf. cg and lose doesn't exactly make you relevant.

Guess that means UGA hasn't been relevant since 2005 and USCe has NEVER been relevant.

It must be frustrating for USCe fans. They've had great seasons lately but haven't won anything of note. I guess the steak against Clemson must be nice though.

I would hate to be having a wet dream in Neyland stadium because someone from volnation would come along and ruin it.

As the title said I had a PNC bank lunch function with Kirk Herbstreet last week. The guy is amazingly personable and downright funny.

This function was at Vestavia CC in Birmingham so obviously he spoke of the iron bowl game and how everyone will remember where they were when the end of that game happened. After his synopsis he did a title game review and as he said he could not actually give a probable score as that conflicts with work require that he refrains from that but he was inferring FSU. Many Auburn fans were shouting out some comments during his team review of both. Spoke about SEC homerism and how they pay little attention to other conferences and he used Michigan State as an example as he was doing a poll on who in the crowd thought they should be number four in the playoff system next year. No one could answer after Bama at three between Baylor, Stanford, or MSU.

He then did a Q&A session and the Bama and Aubie homers came out in full force and one woman was downright rude to him about him elaborating on the fluke of an iron bowl, I know big surprise there. A guy stood up on the other side of the room and was asking about Vandy and the SEC East. Kirk said what he has done is amazing and he hears about him all the time as he lives in Nashville and his kids go to Montgomery Bell Academy, but they have hit their peak. Spoke about some of the powerhouse teams being either injured or rebuilding. Talked about Stoops helping out UK and their constant ball vs fball struggles and the energy surrounding him with regards to recruiting. Talked about Mizzou and how respected Gary Pinkle is and how for nearly a decade they have been playing good ball and he fell into his SEC homerism rant a little about their recent inclusion and lack of respect.

He avoided UF but said they have issues. He then came to us and the first thing he said was it isn't 98 anymore and we haven't been relevant since 2001. But, he did say that he thinks Butch Jones is a hell of a coach and is going to "kill it"in Knoxville. He also said he doesn't follow recruiting very much but there is a whole lot of talk about Tennessee again and there hasn't been since the Kiffin experiment. He did blame our fall on Fulmer and said it was his fault and not Kiffin's and Lane had been spreading that rumor as well.

Kirk looked over the whole crowd and said people in Alabama better watch out because the Vols will be back to their old selves and punishing some Bama teams. The hall got very quiet for a moment and it brought me back to the late 90's when I moved here.

He finished and then and I spoke to him very briefly on exiting and thanked him for his UT comments and he said he meant every word as UT will be back if Butch is given a couple of years to rebuild. He then signed a football for my son that he got for Christmas.

Enjoy and Merry Christmas

F espn :corso: Rated the eighth coach all time in the sec we need a sigh GO TO HILL Herbie

Their job description doesnt involve History lessons. I don't see any Duffy Daugherty segments coming on before the Rose Bowl.

Time. The one thing the Legion of the Miserable does not give. Will be UTs and CBJs downfall if it isnt controlled. As long as we don't have another Gruden type fiasco (cause Hart can't afford to not squash it this go around) I think that'll buy CBJ some time.

The herbster said the same.."give him time"...about Dooley. Wasn't listened to then, so the best bet would be that it won't be this time around either.

Hart was educated with his interview with CBJ and he was a quick learner. He made the correct decision and we will be back. It will take another year to get all the right pieces and get some experience. From then on, The SEC had better batten down the hatches.

Awesome story. Ive heard him say this kind of stuff many times over the past year, i believe he is being completely honest are truly believe in CBJ. Maybe we can start getting some ESPN love if we start winning some games.

The Oklahoma game next year is gonna be huge, and a chance for CBJ to show what strides his team has made. Oh, and Florida is a MUST WIN this year, Neyland should be rocking, especially if we pull out 2 wins in Norman and Athens, which i think is definitely possible, but that hasn't been that problem in our games against Florida.

Excited to see Butch turn it around and hopefully get the Vols back on top. Next year may be the best year to do it, as it seems Florida, Georgia and South Carolina will be down. I am hoping for a Mizzou/UT race for the East, which would be amazing thinking where those two programs were when they played in Neyland 2 years ago.

I share your hope. But you are forgetting that the talent CBJ is bringing in, they are currently high schoolers except for a few JUCOs, they aren't SEC ready yet. 2014 isn't going to be much different than 2013. And I hope team 118 makes barefaced, cotton picking, down and out liar out of me. But, well, you know. . . .

Post mortems really don't do anything but rile us up. Being older, I give credit to Phil for what he did as OC and then as coach up until approximately the Casey Clausen era when I felt Phil's ability to speak to today's kids in their own language was noticeable. From that time forward, there were lots of events and coaching changes, not just at the top, that figured into where we were when CBJ was hired. In my opinion, we botched the transition from CPF and I think the debacle with CLK just kept the downspiral going. For a brief moment their was a little bit of bottoming out and perhaps a slight upbeat around recruiting time following CDD's infamous Year Zero. Then came a more precipitous downward fall when apparently CDD lost touch with the Team and their desire to play for that head coach. We all can commiserate on which of the losses were most difficult to bear but I'd rather not reopen those wounds. I think there is a lot to say about a Team's mental attitude and how they play as a Team. CBJ success at recruiting and his basic approach to what it takes to have a winning program all done in a highly positive way, the national buzz about the resurgence of Vol football, the enthusiasm of the current Team and the enthusiasm of the recruits does mean something. I believe that all figured into the win over uscjr last year and I think it will mean more again next year especially with the help that is on the way. I look forward to a bowl game next year and a lot of excitement at all the games -- won't put a number of wins out there beyond 6 or 7 because a very young and talented team plays hard but doesn't always win. We always hear that the most improvement comes between Game 1 and Game 2 of a season and I've read on this board that also applies to Season 1 and Season 2 of a new coach. I don't expect to be next year's Auburn because I don't think Auburn 2012 is analogous to Tennessee 2013. Yet I won't be surprised if Team 118 outperforms my expectations. GBO!

I definitely think Butch will bring us back but counting wins in Athens and Norman next year is a little much to be counting on this soon, in my opinion. I hope I'm wrong but unreal expectations like these will maybe cause Vol nation to be down on Butch next year if it does not happen. I believe we are looking at 2015 before we begin to turn the corner. We are going to be awfully young next year whick usually brings growing pains. I hope I am wrong but maybe a little patience for another year might be required. GO VOLS!!!

Im not counting on a win, i just said its possible...

Whatever i should have figured being optimistic on VN would get people riled up, pretty sad though considering we still are Tennessee.

I like Herbie alright, but he's full of it accusing a crowd in SEC country of being homers for their conference. Of course we're SEC homers -- just like Herbie is a Big Ten homer. The difference is most of us would admit it.

And give me a break with Michigan State. They lost to an 8-4 Notre Dame team that lost to a 6-6 Pitt team. If they hadn't beaten Ohio State they'd be just another also-ran. And Ohio State was nothing but a pretender all season long and thank goodness they were finally exposed. Herbie is a Buckeye and Big Ten homer and is afflicted with the same disease that a lot of fans of non-SEC teams have -- envy.

OP says one Auburn fan was rude to him, but I'd say his using the occasion to lecture SEC fans about being homers was pretty rude, too. Big Ten fans (and all fans of lesser brands of football) need to know their place when they converse with SEC fans.

Thanks for posting. I too am a long suffering Tennessee fan living in Alabama. I lived here from the mid 90s to the mid 2000s, and never heard a word from the Alabama fans. Then, I moved back here in 2011 and have had to listen to the obnoxious Alabama fans. Auburn fans are great btw. War Eagle, bring back the National Championship! Go Vols, can't wait til the crysom tide is looking up again at the Big Orange in the Sec and on a national level, and it ain't far away! Also, can't wait til vandy assumes it's rightful place in the basement of the SEC. My son works for Nissan in Nashville. The Vandy fans know the clock has struck midnight!!! Go Vols!
