I find it amazing that Hart's 10th choice on his list of potential head coachs at U.T. will actually turn out to be the best one.
I, for one, was freaking out when no "Big named" coach was really interested in the position or Hart was not interested in the few "Big Named" coachs who were interested.
I thought "here we go again"

Just put u on ignore list. Congrats first one!

I like Herbie alright, but he's full of it accusing a crowd in SEC country of being homers for their conference. Of course we're SEC homers -- just like Herbie is a Big Ten homer. The difference is most of us would admit it.

And give me a break with Michigan State. They lost to an 8-4 Notre Dame team that lost to a 6-6 Pitt team. If they hadn't beaten Ohio State they'd be just another also-ran. And Ohio State was nothing but a pretender all season long and thank goodness they were finally exposed. Herbie is a Buckeye and Big Ten homer and is afflicted with the same disease that a lot of fans of non-SEC teams have -- envy.

OP says one Auburn fan was rude to him, but I'd say his using the occasion to lecture SEC fans about being homers was pretty rude, too. Big Ten fans (and all fans of lesser brands of football) need to know their place when they converse with SEC fans.

There is no "we" in this SEC homerism....I hope the rest of the SEC loses. I only root for the Vols, not the SEC.

I wonder if he said anything about his 06' rant about how pollsters had no business elevating UF above UM to play OSU in the BCS Title game. It was the most shameless Big10 homerism I've ever seen on TV. The last time I ever took anything the man said seriously.
Of course, the "undeserving" SEC champs layed the freaking wood to his beloved undefeated Buckeyes just a short time later. Set off a 6 year run of SEC titles too. Have not heard him revisit that yet.

Just because you make it to the occasional conf. cg and lose doesn't exactly make you relevant.

Come on man! There is no doubt TN slipped after 2001 but you can't ignore playing for the toughest conference championship in college football.

Mike Hamilton is the true reason for UT's fall IMO.

Big part of it, but he was a puppet for our big donors. So yes they have some blame too. Fulmer was bigger than Hammy so he has his blame too. He got complacent, and rode it. Heck while we are at it Cutcliffe could be blamed some for not being more like Chavis and wanting to be more than just a coordinator. At the end of the day the Kiffin debacle blew the top off the popiscle stand, and all that had been swept under the rug came out.

But now...Cheek is our biggest problem. Personally heard way to much rumblings about him to not be concerned.

You're clearly living in a dream world where Tennessee could be the greatest team in the country despite playing in the worst conference. I would love to live in that world, too, because I bet I enjoy seeing our rivals lose just as much as you do. But logically I realize that wishing for us to be the best team in a lousy conference is unrealistic.

See UCF, Rice & Bowling Green, just in case you still don't get my meaning.

What does make you relevant then? If playing in the championship game of the best conference in the country doesn't make you relevant then what does?

As the title said I had a PNC bank lunch function with Kirk Herbstreet last week. The guy is amazingly personable and downright funny.

This function was at Vestavia CC in Birmingham so obviously he spoke of the iron bowl game and how everyone will remember where they were when the end of that game happened. After his synopsis he did a title game review and as he said he could not actually give a probable score as that conflicts with work require that he refrains from that but he was inferring FSU. Many Auburn fans were shouting out some comments during his team review of both. Spoke about SEC homerism and how they pay little attention to other conferences and he used Michigan State as an example as he was doing a poll on who in the crowd thought they should be number four in the playoff system next year. No one could answer after Bama at three between Baylor, Stanford, or MSU.

He then did a Q&A session and the Bama and Aubie homers came out in full force and one woman was downright rude to him about him elaborating on the fluke of an iron bowl, I know big surprise there. A guy stood up on the other side of the room and was asking about Vandy and the SEC East. Kirk said what he has done is amazing and he hears about him all the time as he lives in Nashville and his kids go to Montgomery Bell Academy, but they have hit their peak. Spoke about some of the powerhouse teams being either injured or rebuilding. Talked about Stoops helping out UK and their constant ball vs fball struggles and the energy surrounding him with regards to recruiting. Talked about Mizzou and how respected Gary Pinkle is and how for nearly a decade they have been playing good ball and he fell into his SEC homerism rant a little about their recent inclusion and lack of respect.

He avoided UF but said they have issues. He then came to us and the first thing he said was it isn't 98 anymore and we haven't been relevant since 2001. But, he did say that he thinks Butch Jones is a hell of a coach and is going to "kill it"in Knoxville. He also said he doesn't follow recruiting very much but there is a whole lot of talk about Tennessee again and there hasn't been since the Kiffin experiment. He did blame our fall on Fulmer and said it was his fault and not Kiffin's and Lane had been spreading that rumor as well.

Kirk looked over the whole crowd and said people in Alabama better watch out because the Vols will be back to their old selves and punishing some Bama teams. The hall got very quiet for a moment and it brought me back to the late 90's when I moved here.

He finished and then and I spoke to him very briefly on exiting and thanked him for his UT comments and he said he meant every word as UT will be back if Butch is given a couple of years to rebuild. He then signed a football for my son that he got for Christmas.

Enjoy and Merry Christmas

thats funny, work here when I'm home from school. I probably saw you

This. If losing Davonte Lambert to Auburn a couple weeks back didn't convince people here of the stupidity of rooting for other SEC teams to do well, then there's no hope for them, I guess.

If you are going to ignore him over that rather tame post then VN might not be the place for you.

One post per thread...peaceful and safe fandom...kinda like easy listening radio :)

Both of those years, we wouldn't have played for a NC even if we had won the SEC. Being relevant at UT means being in position to play for NC's if we win the conference.

Herstreiaet and Corso have always been closet Vol fans (well, Corso isn't really that "closet" about it).

Corso and Herby both have talked about what a great atmosphere Neyland is at night with all the orange in the stands. That is one of the reasons I don't like wearing alternate colors.

2007 was due to Cut coming back. Otherwise, that staff had ran its course.

So because a good recruit went to a different school in-conference, we should all aspire for Tennessee to become Bowling Green?

I think I'd rather just use things like the Lambert decision to motivate us to want to whoop Auburn all that much more.

Again, there is no alternate reality where all of the other SEC teams are going to be crap and Tennessee is going to be viewed by the rest of the country as a national title contender. The SEC champ is ONLY respected because of the strength of the overall conference. Best to just man-up and rise to the challenge of being the best team in the best conference and enjoy all of the benefits that come with that. The fact that it's hard is what makes it special. Looking for an easier road is just unrealistic.

Dumb argument. The SEC championship is always respected. No one has ever said "Oh, darn, we're just the SEC Champs." Is it more respected now than it used to be? Maybe. Does it matter in the least if you're not the champ? No, it doesn't. Are you going to get to be the champ when you keep losing recruits to other, more successful teams? Nope.

I will be rooting against 2 SEC bowl teams. Always against Bama and I hope Vandy gets throttled. I want this conference to keep the NC so when we rise from the ashes it will be really special. If CBJ can coach as well as he does everything else we'll be fine.

You put him on ignore for that? Why?

Really wasn't anything wrong with what he said. I'm pretty sure many people on here felt the same way when CBJ was hired, as I'm sure most of those same people have changed their opinion since then. That's pretty much what he was saying.

I was ok with the hire, mainly because I have followed Cinci football for a while, but completely understand where a lot of people had different opinions on the hire.
