Hail to the Washington Commanders

I'm seriously ready to call end my fandom. It will be easy too. I don't even own any gear at the moment.

I haven't owned any redskins stuff in years.. just can't bring myself to give Snyder any money.. as far as calling it quits, I say it every year, about the 6th game into the season. It's getting easier and easier, year after year..

so admittedly I pay very little to the draft. I don't get the excitement. but I thought the plan all along was to trade the pick if Mariotta, Winston or Cooper were still on the board, otherwise Scherff was the go to guy? Why are so many people acting like that's a surprise pick?

What he brings: He has below-average length for an NFL tackle, which raises questions as to whether he'll be able to hold up against speed rushers. But we wouldn't count out his chances of making it as an NFL tackle, and at worst he projects as an excellent guard. He has very good strength and quickness, and he's the toughest offensive lineman in the 2015 class. He's a tone-setter with a nasty disposition.

How he fits: Washington had one of the worst offensive lines in the league last year, so it has done well to add one of the best offensive line coaches in the league in Bill Callahan and the best offensive linemen in the draft in Scherff. It's a little unclear where Scherff will line up, considering guard is a pressing need and 2014 third-round pick Morgan Moses struggled at right tackle last year, but Scherff should be a day-one starter regardless of where he plays.

I just don't like taking a guy who some think ends up a guard with a Top 5 pick. Especially when OL is a pretty deep position in this draft.

Some more analysis

Louis Riddick graded the pick an A+.

“This is another guy whose character is platinum,” said Riddick. “It’s A-plus. … This speaks to Scot McCloughan. This is the best player available. Going true to your board, despite the fact that you don’t usually pick guys who are tackles who may convert to guard this high up in the draft. But this is staying true to your board. This is why they hired Scot McCloughan, this is why he needed to be in charge. Great pick for the Redskins.”

And Mel Kiper raved about the overall athleticism of Scherff.

“I tell you what, you talk about an athlete,” said Kiper. “Quarterback as a sophomore, he threw for 1,200 yards in high school, was a punter, offensive lineman, defensive lineman his final two seasons. Baseball, track, shotput, discus — he’s done it all. He’s 6-4 1/2, 320. You can say, well his arms aren’t that long. They’re long enough. He’s got huge hands. [He’s] mean, nasty, a tremendous run blocker, and I think he’s got pretty good feet. I think he’s underrated in pass protection.

“And Jon, you made this point, year after year, Louis, we’ve talked about it, [there are] not a lot of great left tackles in this league. That’s the misnomer. Everybody thinks there’s 20 great left tackles. You’d be hard-pressed to find five, and Brandon Scherff, I think can be a left tackle [or] at worst a right tackle. This kid can play the tackle spot. He’s not pigeon-holed into being a guard automatically.”

I don't have a problem. We don't need a skill position offensive player. We need linemen and secondary help. We took the best available based on our needs. You even said we wouldn't get much for the draft spot didn't you? With no big name still on the board to use as trade bait, the only thing left to do was pick based on needs.

I don't have a problem with the pick, it was definitely a position of need and he was the highest rated OL available in this years draft. He's just not the "homerun" LT you'd want with a Top 5 pick. I don't think there was much else that could have been done. I think he'll be a solid albiet unspectacular OL.

Personally I'd have ranked needs going into the off season in this order:

1. Secondary
2. O-line

3. Defensive front seven

We picked up (albeit questionable) secondary help via free agency. Leaving a large need of o-line help. I'd take Scherff over Williams every day based on needs. I really don't think anyone was going to trade anything worthwhile for Williams. Not a flashy pick, I get that, but I don't see anyone we could've got that would have been a better pick up, all things considered.
