Doug, the 'Skins were pretty bad this year. Any advice for your former team?

They didn't win a lot of games, but they played a lot of games close. I think they'll be a better team than some people expect. A lot of people get on Jason Campbell, but he's a young guy who's had different OCs every year. I'm sure coach Shanahan will build a better football team. I think they'll be better in the next few years.
Quarterback Jason Campbell, who will become a restricted free agent March 5, will be tendered an offer this week, Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said today in a press conference at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis.
He said, according to tweets by Jason Reid and Rick Maese, that he expects Campbell to be part of the team, although he wouldn't say what the tender offer would be. Shanahan expects a lot of competition at the quarterback position and said he expects Campbell to "be here."
well that might - even with competition - still make the drafting of a QB in the 1st round by them much less likely
Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan declined to discuss specific players, but the Redskins could find themselves attached to two of the biggest names available on the market, Carolina defensive end Julius Peppers and Arizona linebacker Karlos Dansby. There are some Redskins officials who think Peppers will still be a strong pass rusher, and Peppers has expressed interest in playing for a 3-4 defense, a version of which Shanahan is expected to install. Dansby is an inside linebacker who already excels in the 3-4.
"Well, obviously I'm not going to go through our game plan for free agency," Shanahan said. "But we're going to do what we can."
Other unrestricted free agents that could pique Washington's interest include San Diego running back Darren Sproles, Green Bay left tackle Chad Clifton and Houston cornerback Dunta Robinson.
The Redskins have signed running back Larry Johnson to join Clinton Portis in the Redskins' backfield, a league source confirmed. Johnson would give the Redskins a strong runner in the backfield to complement Portis, who's expected to begin the season as Redskins' starter.
In a media session at Redskins Park on Thursday, Grossman said he hopes to be "in the mix" at quarterback.
And that’s it.
“Nobody has presented any scenario to me,” he said. “They just said they’re glad to have me as part of the team, and that’s how I’m taking it. I’m here to help the Redskins win the Super Bowl whatever way I can and I just want to be thrown in the mix.”
Asked if he expected to be a starter again in the NFL, Grossman replied: “Yeah, that’s my goal. I want to start in this league and get back there and play. Every quarterback that plays in the NFL wants to start, so that’s kind of an odd question, I guess.
“But I definitely think I can and I’ve got a lot of confidence in myself. Hopefully this is a stepping-stone to the second half of my career.”
And he reiterated -- as he always does -- just how big of a Redskins fan he is these days. "We're excited about this year," he said, "and I'm just excited about being here, being around Redskin Park. I get jacked up when I get around here."
Then, just before turning the mic over to Shanahan, he dropped this bombshell on the media throng. "I'm still coaching," he exclaimed. "I'm coaching my eleven year old grandson, okay?"
The Redskins hold the draft's No. 37 pick, which could put them in prime position to select Tebow in the second round, if they choose. Working out for scouts and coaches Wednesday, Tebow unveiled a new throwing motion intended to erase concerns about his poor mechanics.
Much of the pre-draft speculation has focused on the Redskins possibly drafting a quarterback with their first-round pick, the draft's No. 4 overall. But with a major need at the left tackle position and with the increasing likelihood that Sam Bradford will be chosen by the St. Louis Rams with the draft's first pick, it's certainly possible that
Washington passes on a quarterback in the first round and waits until the second or later. The team signed Rex Grossman to a one-year contract early Wednesday, and Grossman is expected to compete for the team's backup job.
"He will take over the running back position," said Dick Vermeil, who coached Johnson in Kansas City from 2003 to '05. "That's what I think. He'll push that guy right out of a job. Larry Johnson will work all week -- he'll work Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday -- and he'll make you start him on Sundays."
"I've never seen a kid compete so hard to prove that he's as good as the starter," he said. "And if that starter isn't the Priest Holmes-type who will match the effort every single day, Larry Johnson will take his job. I don't know that much about Clinton Portis, but I know what Larry was like. He ran mean. In practices, he ran like he just plain didn't like his teammates."
Free safety Eric Berry is coming to Ash burn. The Redskins are scheduled to bring in the Tennessee All-American on Wednesday for a visit.
The Redskins' preseason schedule, with exact dates and times still to be determined:
Aug. 12-16: Buffalo at FedEx Field
Aug. 19-23: Baltimore at FedEx Field
Aug. 26-29: at New York Jets
Sept. 2-3: at Arizona Cardinals
All games will be on NBC4/ComcastSportsNet.
This week the Redskins welcomed top prospect safety Eric Berry in for a visit and even Berry couldn’t help but reminisce about the pro-bowlers uniqueness:
“I really liked the way Sean Taylor attacked his opponent, he didn’t care who it was. Just watching him, you could tell he always played hard. He would just run full speed and try to make a hit – and he could definitely hit. But at the same time, I think he played the game how it’s supposed to be played. He played it very passionately. He didn’t go out there selfishly. He played for his teammates. When you turn on the film and watch him, you can see he’s trying to help his team. You can see it right there.”
