Happy for our guy Trey Smith!

Considering what Trey has been through and the doubters about him during the draft, what a story. VFL is fixing to get paid.

They’re shortchanging him imo. Unless KC can come up with $21 mil per mostly guaranteed (hometown “discount”), teams like Chicago will fight to give him $110 mil fully guaranteed…also imo.

No chance in hell he gets a fully guaranteed deal....

Haslam was the only guy stupid enough to give a 9 figure fully guaranteed deal to a player

@butchna

There are too many poorly run teams with cap space so I can see Trey resetting the Guard market and becoming the first Guard with $50M fully guaranteed. I think some team gets to the 55-60M fully guaranteed range. A team like the Bears that might make some sense. A team like the Titans or Raiders, not so much given how many holes they have...

I think he exceeds the $21M AAV that was speculated in this article. I wouldnt be shocked if its 5/115 (however, those last 2 years wont be guaranteed and the 3rd one only partially)....

Ever peruse Lamar Jackson’s contract? Bears are desperate for a linchpin at IOL and they’ll overpay and over promise for the best one in this FA class.

Wouldn’t happen without the proven durability. Teven Jenkins a tragic cautionary tale.

Lamar is 5/260 with 135M fully guaranteed. Makes what Haslam did with Watson completely stupid.

I dont love Trey at $23-$25M a year but if you have a QB on a rookie deal, it makes sense for Chicago. That division is a bear but they are further along than TN, NE, or LV...

Every OL but Wright is replaceable.

Bears need him badly. They need to upgrade at almost every position if I’m being honest, but the interior of the OL in particular absolutely stunk this past season. Put in a mauler at guard like Trey Smith next to Darnell Wright and now we’re starting to build a competent OL.

Trey gonna get paid for at least one year...tag is worth a shade over 23 MILL...so proud of this dude !!!

He was looking at getting contracts worth a lot more over multiple years from another team. This, on the other hand, is essentially just a 1-year stopgap…which unfortunately doesn’t favor the player if there’s drop off or injury in the upcoming year.

It’s celebratory for the team (KC gets to keep him on the cheaper end without competition from teams with more money available) but usually not for the player stuck with the tag (for comparison’s sake: the top Guard on the market last year got a $100M contract with $63M guaranteed for 5 years…he got about $27M just as a signing bonus alone…Smith would have been getting higher numbers than that on the market from multiple teams this year).

Total Guaranteed Money
1. Deshaun Watson, $230 million

Signed: March 2022 (contract ends in 2027)

2. Dak Prescott (DAL), $229 million
3. Joe Burrow (CIN), $219 million
4. Patrick Mahomes (KC), $208.1 million
5. Trevor Lawrence (JAX), $200 million
6. Justin Herbert (LAC), $193.7 million
7. Kyler Murray (ARI), $189.5 million

That's just a few that have guaranted deals with 9 figures right now.

Only Watson is "fully guaranteed". There's no guards over 50M guaranteed. I think Trey becomes the first...

I have never understood how this works. Does Trey still have options to explore other options or is he contractually obligated to stay with the Chiefs?
If it’s exclusive, He's obligated to stay. If it’s not exclusive, he can still negotiate with other teams. However, the Chiefs would receive 2 first round picks in return if he signed elsewhere. That pretty much guarantees that he stays regardless of whether it’s exclusive or not.
