The NCAA realizes that 119 other college coaches will be watching to see what the standard is for a coach lying to the NCAA. The NCAA MUST, MUST, MUST hit U.T. hard.
If not, then they will look foolish.
I predict that they will (1) Suspend Pearl for a full season (2) We lose one scholarship in 2012 and one in 2013 (3) No Post-season play for 2012 & 2013. (4) Lose t.v. in 2012.
Once the punishment is announced, then Hamilton will fire Pearl for "Just Cause" and we will NOT owe him any money. Can't fire him yet. It may backfire!
When we have sanctions, no good coach will want to come here. When the sanctions are over, we will need to hire a really good coach and take 5 years with the new coach before we get any tournament success.
The 8 game SEC sanction is not impressing the NCAA. The 25% reduction in salary is not impressing the NCAA. The restriction on recruiting is not impressing the NCAA.
Bottom line is, we picked the wrongest time possible to get the NCAA angry. With a new NCAA rep. on board, he wants to flex his muscle and we are at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Also, you can bet your bottom dollar that Pearl will eventually end up at a school that has a history of basketball. That school may be down at the present time, but Pearl will serve his one year suspension, then get hired by that school and have alot of success. A school like Houston, Seton Hall, St. Johns, etc. will hire him. A school that has had success but currently isn't doing very well.
The bright side of this is that we at least had 6 good years of mens basketball at U.T.
I plan on concentrating on football for the next 7 or 8 seasons, until we can get back in the NCAA tourney in basketball. It will be a long wait, but in 7 or 8 yrs. we will be back on the map.
