Has Butch Closed the Gate for 2018 Recruiting?

Reality check!....very few coaches "own" their state outside of Saban and Urban M.

Let's do a quick comparison since Saban and Meyer have locked down their states:

Ohio State recruits from Ohio - 5
Bama recruits from Alabama - 6
Tenn recruits from Tennessee - 8

Bama recruits in Alabama top 25 - 5
Ohio State recruits in Ohio top 25 - 6
Tenn recruits in Tennessee top 25 - 6 (Fant just missed at #26)

Bama recruits in Alabama top 5 - 1
Tenn recruits in Tennessee top 5 - 2 (Gray just missed at #6)
Ohio State recruits in Ohio top 5 - 4

So, we're more locked in every statistical category than Bama and are on par with Ohio State. Very few coaches own their states. Period.

We don't get as many out of state recruits as we used to because we've got more good in state kids. We do a much better job than GA FL SC etc in keeping home grown kids at home. 2018 should be good for the state & we will get the majority of major players I believe.

The Nashville area is only going to get more diluted with non TN fans the way these immigrants are coming here. I've heard 750 people a week are moving here.

In Saban's first few years he absolutely dominated instate recruiting but now they are able to recruit any part of the country.

I agree 100%. OP started the talk. We get too many outside schools taking talent and always will. Even Fulmer didn't close the state to other schools.

The main reason Fulmer didn't close the state was because the national recruits he pulled in, were a lot better than anything we had in the state back then. The talent in the state of Tennessee is better than it has been in my 46 years of life. IMO, with the increase in talent, it is vital for us to dominate our state. When I say dominate, I mean, at least 2 of the top 5 and 5 of the top 12, every year. Don't u guys think agre that should be plausible ?

OP,

The fact that you, and others, call CBJ by his first name is disgraceful. No matter your opinion of the man, his position commands and deserves respect.
Using the title "coach" is something you learn way back when in youth league football.

And sure, I fully understand the frustrations and concerns that many VFLs have. I empathize with those fans who "truly do" bleed orange and white. Those fans who dream about championships and the glory years. Those fans who are lifers and are so passionate. You are what makes UT football beautiful.

But..

Notwithstanding CBJ's superhuman type work ethic, as well as, how he tirelessly works to resurrect our program from the dead, he is still disrespected by ornery fans who claim to be VFLs. It just makes me wonder whether or not you ever played football before when you openly dismiss using the title of coach. Which begs the question, do you even have a clue about football?

And yet..

You more than likely do have a clue and are well versed in the game, so let's practice using reverence towards our coaching staff. Why? Because that's what footballers (current players, former players, and eccentric fans) do.

Should be a good in-state class.

Will Lawrence has already eliminated us.

Jacob Warren (TE) is a legacy and we are in good standing with TE/Ath Schoenwald as well.

Litaker will be a tough battle, has offers from Bama, UF, LSU etc.

Brenden Harris (S) will probably be another tough recruiting battle, early offer from Clemson, plus offer from LSU as well

Master Teague I think we're probably in good standing there as we're his best offer, volatil might be able to tell us a little more about Teague.

Camron Johnson has offers from LSU, Auburn, & Ole Miss but we croot Brentwood pretty well (Schoenwald and Marby are the other 2 from Brentwood that we are recruiting).

Lawless has offers from everywhere- Bama, Auburn, LSU, UGA, OSU etc. However he's visited TN multiple times, been to several games, and his former teammate is Bituli. I like our chances there.

Emerson we stand a pretty good chance, he has visited twice I think. however he does have offers from big name schools like Bama, Auburn, OSU, etc so you never know this early.

Iyama (OT) we probably lead for. he's visited multiple games.

The Odin kid who looks like a pretty good WR (Tylin Odin's little brother, Justin Oden). Offers from LSU & Ole Miss.

We are in better shaped with Brendan Harris than any other player on this list.

This question is nonsensical because: A) coaching staffs will change, and B) recruiting rankings will change. Last year at this time, Tennessee fans were thinking about Tee Higgins and Cordarrian Richardson-- now Tee is headed to Clemson and lost out to Trey Smith for highest rating in the state. Richardson is looking at JUCO, assuming no one saves him with last minute academic chicanery.

TL;DR: Things change.

I'm not crazy about being lectured. I last played football 40 years ago. But, OK, fine, Coach Jones (isn't the B in CBJ calling him by his 1st name?) has had my support. Back to back 9 wins, beat Florida and (again) UGA, 3 blowout bowl wins in a row. We're a long way from where we were 48 months ago. There's one guy to thank. I'm rooting for him to pull in another Top-5 class in 2018, and for us to burn our ships on the beach at last and stick with the man.

I think what sux for us compared to those states is they have hundreds of quality recruits and we'll have 10-20. Plus Florida has multiple major programs, Georgia and Alabama each have 2. We need to get back to the point where kids from Tennessee want to play for Tennessee. A kid from Nashville shouldn't grow up being a FSU, Bama or Georgia fan.
I think it all sorts itself out in the wash. We pull from other states those kids who fit our system and want to play for the Big Orange. Would it be nice to have all the blue chips say "of course I'm only considering the Vols?" Sure, but not realistic. And fans don't really know the whole picture either. Some kids have family ties or just simply like other schools for whatever reason that we may not even know about. Now, if I heard there were blue chips that we didn't even talk to, like that kid who went up to Ohio State during the previous admin, then I would be concerned. That doesn't appear to be the case these days.

We do very well in both states bud.

Not this year.

Not one 4 star from either state and not even a top 40 player from either state. Kirby locked down Ga this year and it shows in the rankings.

Tn talent is only going to get better with the increase in population in middle Tn. Some elite talent now at the top in Tn, still need OOS talent tho.

We don't lead for Iyama. He is a Louisville lean at the moment. He kinda has a grudge against UT since he visited twice before and left with no offer, and then when he came back with Wray he was offered. I've been trying to get in his ear

We are in better shaped with Brendan Harris than any other player on this list.
Cool, thanks for the info

The great thing about next year's in state class is the depth of top quality SEC talent. There my legitimately be 15-20 SEC level players in the 2018 Tennessee class. On paper, it looks like UT at this juncture could realistically land 10 or more of those players. But, as it's been said, there's a long time between now and 2018 signing day.
