Has Butch Closed the Gate for 2018 Recruiting?

I agree 100%. OP started the talk. We get too many outside schools taking talent and always will. Even Fulmer didn't close the state to other schools.

When Butch brought in his big class 3 years ago, he was offering immediate playing time. But let's face it, most of the recruits we are going after have to find old videos to see Tennessee's better days.

Most all of us were hoping for at least a divisional championship this past season to elevate how Tennessee is perceived by recruits. Best any coach can do is to keep building relationships with his in state HS coaching staffs, especially those who contend for titles every year.

In all fairness to Fulmer, Tennessee was nowhere near a recruiting hotbed during his time. Not like it has grown in the past 5 years. But if Butch can keep building his rolodex, we stand a chance to get the better talent here.

But while you are at it, dare to go into Alabama and South Carolina to steal a few under Saban's and Dabo's noses.

OP,

The fact that you, and others, call CBJ by his first name is disgraceful. No matter your opinion of the man, his position commands and deserves respect.
Using the title "coach" is something you learn way back when in youth league football.

This is a joke...right?

That depends on the coaches he hires. The assistants do the coaching, not the head coach.

Probably has more to do with who we hire to replace Butch later this year. If we stay within the region and focus on known commodities in the coaching search, we should be alright.

We do very well in both states bud.

If you just look at the lack of 4* commits from either of those states in this class, it's easy to think that we've dipped down in those places and it makes sense that FL is gonna tighten up some with Richt at Miami. GA I don't know what's happened. Maybe some of the uncommitted 4* in GA is where we'll make up ground on NSD.

Hell no. Look at this year. We have few of the top kids in the state for 2017. Even if Butch wants them badly, nothing assures him they will actually come here. Door is still wide open in my opinion. Butch does not own this state. Probably never will.

This guy!! 1982 alum for a reason! While atari may have been your niche recruiting is far from it! If you don't think these high school coaches and pipelines influence kids your nuts! The handlers and aka Jaylen Hurd sperm donors play a big role. Butch has got this!

Let's do a quick comparison since Saban and Meyer have locked down their states:

Ohio State recruits from Ohio - 5
Bama recruits from Alabama - 6
Tenn recruits from Tennessee - 8

Bama recruits in Alabama top 25 - 5
Ohio State recruits in Ohio top 25 - 6
Tenn recruits in Tennessee top 25 - 6 (Fant just missed at #26)

Bama recruits in Alabama top 5 - 1
Tenn recruits in Tennessee top 5 - 2 (Gray just missed at #6)
Ohio State recruits in Ohio top 5 - 4

So, we're more locked in every statistical category than Bama and are on par with Ohio State. Very few coaches own their states. Period.

I don't think Bama people are too worried. Since Saban started in January 2007, AL has produced 20 Rivals 5* prospects. 16 of the went to Bama, 3 went to Auburn, and Jameis went to FSU.

Since BJ started in December 2012, TN has produced 9 Rivals 5* prospects. Assuming that present commitments stand, Vols will have gotten 4 of those and 5 will have left the state.

Point is that Bama will get pretty much whoever they in state, a feat that the BSIA is not capable of up to now.

Not a sunsine pumper but a realist. Have this thread reappear in 6 months and see how many UT has commits for. I'm betting less than 1/2 the top ten kids in the state.

Number of commits 6 months from now is a meaningless measure. I guess that's what we call a straw man. Maybe it's one to try to make the coach look bad, or yourself to look good by saying I told you so. I don't know.
But it's very possible that 6 months from now less than 1/2 of them will be commits to any school; that's still relatively to early in the process. We UT fans love to jump to conclusions about such things, i.e. judging next year's recruiting class in the summer. Let's take a look 1 year from now, or better yet NSD. Then we can make our judgments.
