Has Heupel surpassed Butch as the best post-Fulmer coach?

Johnny took over programs at their lowest point. Fulmer took over a Ferrari and turned it into a Pinto. Johnny left every place he coached in much better shape than he found it. Fulmer destroyed Tennessee, twice.

This might be one of the most misinformed posts I have ever seen and that's saying something.

When a coach...any coach...takes a no. 3 undefeated team with big wins over uga and uf, and loses to a WINLESS Arkansas team...that HAD LOST TO THE CITADEL AT HOME...to back out of the inaugural SECCG that we were a lock for, then we can talk about how he sucks and needs to be fired.

Oh yah, that's right. That IS why we fired ole Johnny.

You delusional "johnny's boys" need to let it go. It was time to get him out the way, and I am eternally grateful that Dickey and Joe Johnson put their collective foots up his arse.

With the win against Bama yesterday, I think an argument could be made for Heupel being our best coach since Fulmer. However, Butch won all 3 bowl games, while Heupel is 0-1. Butch also had back to back 9 win seasons and beat Georgia, which Heupel hasn’t done. However, Butch never beat Alabama, so I’d say those two things cancel each other out. Also, both beat Florida. What do you guys think? Has Josh surpassed Butch yet, or does he need more time?
He surpassed Butch the first day he walked on campus.

Wait are you punking us? Are you serious Clark?

Battle didn’t have a losing season. Fact. TN was nowhere near its lowest point when Majors took over. Fact.

Doug Dickey recruited 14 eventual All Americans between 1964 and 1969. Bill Battle recruited one, the lowest number for any coach to coach here more than five years and by a wide margin. He completely demolished the roster. That North Texas defeat is among the three worst in program history. Battle was a disaster that took years to recover from.

Johnny Majors won multiple SEC titles for us as a player and coach. He stacked the roster full of NFL players while hiring multiple great coaches, including virtually the entire 1998 staff. He's one of the all time legendary players here and did more for Tennessee football in any given week of his life than you will ever do if you lived 50 lifetimes. Your disrespect for what he did for the program as a player and then as a coach by leaving a national championship program he'd built to come home, is an embarrassment to everyone who ever put on the Orange and White. You should be ashamed but you're likely not smart enough to feel so.

He also lost to Duke twice, Army once, tied a really bad Georgia Tech team a week after beating bama, and I could go on and on and on.

But you can't excuse your way out of the 1992 debacle. Phil took Johhny's players in a year we weren't supposed to be any good, beat uga and florida decisively, only to have Johnny come back early and ruin the whole season in a fit of jealousy, and I will never forgive him for that.

Dude....he lost to a WINLESS ****ING ARKANSAS TEAM! They were WINLESS! You cannot defend that. Try. Tell me how that was good. How can you even begin to contrast the wins over Uga and UF that year with the losses to South Carolina and Arkansas? You can't, and you know it. It was time for Johnny to go.

You are DELUSIONAL bro.

I think you use too many drugs. What the hell kind of question is that?

Majors did plenty for UT. I'm thankful that he was there. I'm also thankful that Fulmer took over and actually won a title. Majors let the game pass him by. Fulmer did too. Majors was disgruntled constantly. Wanted to be AD and coach. Majors rushed back and completely destroyed the '92 team. Majors is a legend. But it was time..

Exactly. I don't hate Johnny Majors, but I do hate what he did in 1992 and to anyone objective he had underperformed quite a bit over the years. He was good but the game had passed him by (as a student in the late 80s I witnessed at Neyland that he did a quick kick on 3rd down one time, for instance, rolleyes).

I love Phil also and what he did for our program, but objectively he had slipped a notch also. Although I thought it was a better idea to keep him on a few more years (FSU did it with Bowden) to give him another chance and also to wait for a better time to make the move, one thing I will not do is defend his performance from 2005-2008. It's not defensible.

What's very sad is that Fulmer's record from 2005-2008 was still better than any four year stretch since and included an SECCG game. Butch almost got there, but infamously failed.

In any case, I do respect Johnny and I am glad he helped rebuild the program (which took a long time, but he got it done), but he blew it in 1992 and I am very glad we made the change.

Uhhh...Majors took more time than any coach today would have. He also got real conservative with a small lead and got tied or beaten late. I think 1990 was the best UT team ever and he got tied twice and beaten by Bama on a blocked FG attempt that turned into a FG for Bama. It would have been another Tie. 3 ties in one year....I was almost glad we lost that one. We only tied Colorado, the other tie was a loss to Auburn.

Yes. He’s obviously surpassed the others. At this point I think he’s clearly a better coach than fulmer ever was. I don’t even think it’s close if you take into consideration what heupel inherited and how quickly he’s gotten us to where we are. Now if you said has he accomplished as much as the others…no. Not yet. But he’s an amazing X’s and O’s coach. Flat out amazing. The only other guy that we’ve had that was as good of an offensive guy is probably kiffin.

First off Kiffin was a better coach than Butch. And laugh all you want, but if this season keeps progressing this way, Heupel will have become a better coach than Fulmer.
