Has Heupel surpassed Butch as the best post-Fulmer coach?

If we're being pure statistical, Kiffin was the best coach post Fulmer, in my opinion at least. The leaving in the middle of the night BS aside, he is actually a great coach. I hate him, and hope he never wins a game again, but he's a damn good coach, can't argue that.

CJH is better. He's probably better overall than Fulmer, but he really needs to rely on a his Defensive staff because he's an offensive guru, but doesn't play in the sandbox really with the Defense guys.

I don't see CJH going anywhere, I'm more afraid of our Offensive coordinator getting a HC shot sooner than later and having to replace that cog in the machine, but we'll be golden for a LONG time with this staff and this AD.

The Administration MVP is Danny White though. We're legit contenders in 3 mens sports for a Natty within 2 years of him taking the reigns.

God it's great to be a Tennessee Vol!! GBO!

I'm trying to remember when BJ had us arguing about being 3 or 4 in the polls. Trying to remember when BJ had us disagreeing about our playoff opponent, if we had 1 loss, after beating Bama? Anyone remember those glory days?

Johnny took over programs at their lowest point. Fulmer took over a Ferrari and turned it into a Pinto. Johnny left every place he coached in much better shape than he found it. Fulmer destroyed Tennessee, twice.
You are aware that Johnny got another job (with Pitt again) after he left Tennessee and it was an epic disaster. Success at another school is irrelevant to where he ranks on TNs coaching list, like how Butch’s 10 win seasons at Cincy and CMU are completely worthless when it comes to analyzing his time in Knoxville.

Love the man, but the game had passed him by, much like it had Fulmer in 2008, and this argument is about as useful as the one about old quarterbacks.

No comparison. Butch had talent, he didn't out coach anybody. Heupel is a coach, he out schemed the great bama defense all game. We needed a 2 point conversion that was executed beautifully, butch would be blaming the loss on his chart, because there's no way he does that. Heupel, with 25 seconds called two plays that put us in the spot to beat bama. Butch would've taken a knee for overtime. There's no comparison, Heupel is miles ahead.
Brilliant 🎯💯

With the win against Bama yesterday, I think an argument could be made for Heupel being our best coach since Fulmer. However, Butch won all 3 bowl games, while Heupel is 0-1. Butch also had back to back 9 win seasons and beat Georgia, which Heupel hasn’t done. However, Butch never beat Alabama, so I’d say those two things cancel each other out. Also, both beat Florida. What do you guys think? Has Josh surpassed Butch yet, or does he need more time?
Is this a joke or……?

By a mile. Yes. It’s not close.

Hype has beaten LSU, Florida, and Bama in year two. They guy has us in position to finish top 5, compete for an SECC, and a Natty.

Assuming he’s not a bone head like Butch and actually finishes the season without stumbling to lesser opponents he could be the best coach we’ve had in much much longer than just Fulmer’s era. Time will tell on that one though.

yes, like Fulmer, the game passed by Johnny - especially given his medical issues. Believe the real comparison is that Johnny left Pitt after winning a National Champion to come back to UT - really not about what happened when he went back to Pitt (after being forced out from UT). I assume you, like me, was very supportive of getting rid of Phil (albeit a year or two late) to keep the program moving forward. For whatever it’s worth, Kiffen could have been thought of as a home run hire (loved the swagger he brought) but like Majors, he yielded to the siren-song of his “home.” Failures in administration (AD/etc) led to slippery slope that’s plagued our team for past decade+.

I’m waiting for the rest of the 2022 regular season because the Volunteers (6-0) have 6 regular season games left.
A great regular season is achievable which would be 9 wins or more because Tennessee defeated an undefeated number 3 Alabama team that had their starting QB, a possible good LSU team in Tiger Stadium, a rebuilding Florida team that was ranked when Tennessee played Florida, and a good Pittsburgh team in Overtime.

Also the Volunteers this season need to win their bowl game this season because they are an improved team after a successful 2021 rebuilding season.

I need a sample size of 5 seasons to see if Heupel has exceeded Butch Jones As the Best Post Fulmer Coach.

2022 could realistically be a great season after a successful 2021 rebuilding season that had the normal growing pains including they lost to multiple talented ranked teams that weren’t rebuilding.
Let’s just say 2022 is a great season.

I would still need to see the 3 full seasons to see visible evidence that the 2022 great season wasn’t lighting in a bottle.

being the best coach post-Fulmer is like being the smartest guy in Commonwealth stadium. Not saying much. However, of course Heupel is. Butch wasn't the best post-Fulmer, Kiffin was. Butch was here 5 years and had more talent (Kiffin left on his own, I get it), but Kiffin is 5 times the coach Butch will ever dream of being.

You obviously don’t know your history. Majors took over in 1977. From 1952-1976, TN went 165-71. TN was nowhere near its lowest point when Majors took over. Right before Majors was Battle. Battle never had a losing season at TN.

Battle started great but went downhill. I'm not old enough to remember, but from what I've read written by people that do say the roster that Johnny Majors inherited in 1977 was possibly the worst in the post-war era at Tennessee. Majors had to go almost ground up and that's why it took several years to get us back to respectability.

You clearly don't know your history, I attended every game of the Bill Battle era, he took over a juggernaut from Doug Dickey that was loaded and ran it into the ground.. Battle's recruiting was horrific and the roster was decimated when Johnny took over. In the season before his last Tennessee lost to North Texas and Vanderbilt, and got dominated by an Ole Miss team that didn't even make a bowl game. In his final season he lost to a 5 win Duke team and Kentucky, we barely beat Vanderbilt and Memphis that year, the roster went from the best in the SEC to the bottom in a 6 year span. There's a reason Battle was forced out and never coached again. He was not capable of running a program.

Battle didn’t have a losing season. Fact. TN was nowhere near its lowest point when Majors took over. Fact.
