Have We Bottomed Out Yet?

I'm still undecided on this hire, and wanted a big name as much as anyone, but to be fair to Jones, let's look at some comparisons:

UGA:
Mark Richt- FSU OC. Not as well known as Jones

South Carolina
Spurrier and Holtz, both more proven than Jones and it has worked out great for their program

Florida:
Muschamp- Texas DC
Urban Meyer- Utah and Bowling Green HC
Zook- NO Asst. who was unknown

Vandy:
Franklin- OC Maryland
Bobby Johnson- HC in FCS

Bama:
Saban- More proven than Jones
Shula- QB Coach somewhere in the NFL
Price- More proven than Jones
Franchione- HC at TCU. About the same as Jones considering the timeframe

LSU:
Miles- HC at Oklahoma State, more name recognition than Jones
Saban- HC at Michigan State, more name recognition than Jones

Arkansas:
Bielema- More name recognition at bigger job
Petrino- More name recognition at bigger job

Auburn:
Malzahn- Lot of name recognition for a career HS, OC, and one season as HC in SBC
Chizik- Iowa State. About the same level as Jones.

Chizik ... the same level ... when he coached Iowa State Chizik was I believe 5-19. How is that the same a Butch Jones 50-27 coming to Tennessee? Someone has their coaches or math screwed up.

Screw all you NEGAVOLS tired of hearing it. Support your team or GTFO. Give the man a damn chance. You sound like an absolute idiot talking about what he is going to do and you have no idea who he is other than google. I'm guessing you have only seen him coach 1 game UT vs. UC STFU

I actually lived in Cincy when Brian Kelly was there so I'm fully aware of the man. So you failed on that attempt but you hit the nail on the head when you implied that most people have no idea who he is without Googling him. You think Apple hires a CEO that noone's ever heard of? How 'bout HP, GE, or IBM. This is Tennessee. It's time to stop searching for coaches and spending money like we're looking for a new 2nd shift manager at the local Walmart. We're top 10 nationally in revenue. Spend the freakin' money!

No offense to Butch Jones. I wish the man the best. But UT fans deserve to know they hired a winner.

This season, Cincinnati finished the regular season 9-3 with a 5-2 record in the Big East to share the conference crown. Jones's defense ranked 12th in the nation in scoring defense at 17.2 and 12th in red zone defense (70.6%), and Cincinnati has ranked in the top 20 in scoring defense in each of the last two seasons.

That right there is telling!

Fulmer - won BCS NC

How's that for a proven recruiter?

Just a little side note:

Jones's recruiting classes at Cincy were higher than Brian Kelly's while at Cincy.

He will do fine recruiting at TN.

I get that everyone has an opinion and I had some coaches in mind that I had hoped we'd get, but since this hire was announced I've been disappointed in the reaction by many Vols fans. I say many because this doesn't apply to all, but it does apply to enough of them that it warrants a reaction.

First, why get upset with Jones for taking the job and planning to do all he can to make the Vols better? Sure, you may not have wanted him or felt there were better candidates, but he didn't make the choice on who came he only made the choice that he and his family come.

With this logic I would expect Alum and fans to be angry with Strong and Gruden for choosing not to come. They obviously had the same choice Jones did and didn't make the same decision. Or better yet lets be angry with Gundy who clearly had no intentions on coming to UT, but did make a fool out of us by bringing UT to town and later rejecting the offer to get a pay raise with OK state.

Finally, if you're truly angry and upset about the hire your ire should be directed at Hart and Cheeks. They made the final decision on who was hired and should be the ones who take the heat should it not pan out.

Butch Jones simply made the choice to make UT his home when he clearly had other options. I will back him for now if for no other reason than that. I hope he succeeds and will be in Knoxville each fall to witness it until he gives me a reason not to.

Welcome to Tennessee Butch

Yes, we have bottomed out and it looks like we plan to stay there and ride along the bottom for quite a few years to come.

This is a worthless garbage hire worthy of only a bottom feeder program like us !!!

Never thought I would see it, but we have actually traded places with Vandy.

Nov 2008 I thought the Wyoming loss was rock bottom
Enter Kiffin and a great recruiting class and there was hope.

Jan 2010 I thought Kiffin leaving was rock bottom
Enter Dooley and a convincing press conference and there was hope.

Nov 2011 - I thought the loss to a qb-less UK and the loss of 7 assistant coaches was rock bottom.
Enter Graham, Sunseri, Patterson and an electric offense and there was hope.

Sept 2012 I watched UT pack it in after leading UF for 3 quarters. And later saw the worst defense in UT history and I thought we hit rock bottom.
We fired Dooley at the end of the year and did it with a level of class not afforded Fulmer and I thought there was hope.

Dec 2012 We free up $18mil to correct systemic problems with our football program and I thought heck yeah! They finally get it!
Today we hired Butch Jones?

Why announce the presence of a huge warchest if there's no plan to use it?

Clutter :snoring:

2011/2012 were the 2 best recruiting years in bearcat history, back to back....and as for the original poster's question, a guy hired at random out of the knoxville phone book - and I'm being serious - could win 4 out of 23 sec games at UT, so of course we have bottomed out. You can't fall off the floor.

:lolabove: A guy who has little or no southern connections. Has never beaten a decent team. In spite of the Brian Kelly comparisons, didn't have a record in the same universe as Kelly.

2013 is going to be brutal. We may be staring 4-8 right in the face.

Brian Kelly

19-16 at CMU
34-6 at Cincy

Butch Jones

27-13 at CMU
23-14 at Cincy

That's in the same universe.

Don't need southern ties if you hire people that do. Graham will probably be retained and if we get Tee that will definitely help.

2013 may be brutal, doubt 4-8 brutal. Hate to break it to you though, was going to be brutal no matter the coach.

Still in the downward spiral.

lol ... be happy. He might win you never know. You have said plenty of times you would rather gamble than settle.
Now you don't like your roll ...lol

Now if you don't like the new coach and the only thing your interested in is winning. if you are going to rag him before he even has a chance to show us what he can do. Then maybe you should go find another team. We are 8th in all time wins. There are 7 other teams that has more wins that you can go root for. Now if Tennessee is your team, you got what you wanted now support him.

And for me I would have rather had Fulmer no doubt. That being said I hope CBJ reaches out to Fulmer and with Fulmers help I believe CBJ will be successful.

GO BIG ORANGE!!!

I would, but I'd expect us to be smart about the gambles we make. That means you don't hire Derek Dooley when Kevin Sumlin wants the job. That means you don't hire the wrong Butch.

I said before you have to add in all the unseen variables. They call it a gamble because you don't know, it's a bet.
Now you took the bet and lost. Now don't whine about it, take it like a man. I told you not to put your trust in the AD. They really don't care what we think. Think about this day next time you have so much faith in the AD to make that hire you want. But, today is the day we get behind our new coach!!!!

The problem isn't the bet itself. That's always the right choice. The problem is an incompetent AD that's rigged the hand.

Keep telling yourself that..

So you're basically saying that we're a middle-of-the-road program that was lucky to get someone as awesome as Fulmer and, without him, is doomed to hiring mid-major losers.

This is the problem with our fanbase.

In reflection, I do not believe the hire was nearly as low as the Dooley era, but that's JMHO
