Hawaii travel advice

If Oahu is the only island you'll be visiting, do as others have mentioned and rent a convertible car. You'll love visiting Pearl Harbor. I would suggest buying advance tickets online for both the memorial and the USS Oklahoma.

The wife will probably enjoy shopping at Waikiki beach. You'll want to go on a whale watching tour. My wife and I enjoyed eating at the Hula Grill on Waikiki beach.

Who should we fly with? When it comes down to it, I believe all the reputable airlines have the same amenities. But what does a person who has travelled to Hawaii before, reccomend?

The best one used to be Continental out of Newark, NJ. One long flight but they left mid-morning and arrived at 6pm Hawaii time, so you got to see the sunset, eat dinner, relax for a bit and then sleep.

There are similar flights out of Atlanta. I don't recommend the ones with multiple stops and be careful if they route you through Chicago as weather can affect your travel.

When we lived at Fort Polk, La we used to use the non-stop out of Dallas. If you can route through Dallas that would be good.

Right now, we are thinkng American through Dallas to Honolulu. Honolulu through Chicago to home. Only reason we are thinkng this is cost. We can leave early and arrive in honolulu at 4pm. On the way home, we leave at midnight and arrive home at 3pm.

Only complaint I had going to Hawaii was the jet lag I got coming back. Jet lag is weird stuff I'll tell you that. Took 3 days of being back home before my head finally felt right.

That isn't bad, I've flown both although it has been a while. Try not to sleep the entire flight home, maybe just sleep the Honolulu to Chicago leg and then try to stay awake the rest of the time. When you get home, stay up until your normal bed time, even if you are dog tired. Make sure you get some sun in the morning and evening the next day to reset your time clock.

Here are some things that I did when I went to Oahu and loved it

1.) Went to lost beach. Be sure to look up directions. It is located on the North Shore. Lot of privacy and a very nice beach
2.)Diamond Head
3.) Turtle Beach. There were always massive turtles on this beach for viewing, but do not touch. There are people watching you.
4.) hanauma bay is a nice beach to visit with snorkling
5.) Dole Pineapple plantation
6.)Sacred Falls Park (just a nice place to walk around)
7.) Pearl Harbor
8.) Friday nights there is a fireworks show on Waikiki beach
9.) Go to a luau

The North Shore of Oahu is famous for large waves and surfing so you should check that out. Beautiful beaches there too.

This time of year, it's definitely a must see! If the waves are big enough, could catch the Eddie Aikau competition

no other islands? you could do a puddle jumper to Maui for a day.

We went to Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve. Great place for snorkeling. Only place I've ever seen a moray eel. It was a baby but way cool to see on close up. Turtles everywhere.

ps start saving money now. Its expensive as s__ over there and not because they're gouging tourist. Everything is just expensive.

I don't know the last time you went to Haunauma Bay, but I would skip it. They dump out busloads of tourists and it's a mess.

Definitely Newark. It's the only flight from the mainland in which business class has full lay-down pods

1 month away and counting. I have reserved a convertible for a few days to tour the island. I am going to "book" a day for Pearl Harbor soon. I have reserved a spot on a dive boat out of North Shore to swim with the Sharks. I have my open water certification so this is something I want to check off my bucket list. Any must do hikes on Oahu? Maybe a place to watch the sunset over the beach?

I went and stayed right on the main strip at Wakiki. Went with a friend for a week. Where we stayed it was real nice, but there was some kind of construction going on and kinda noisy a lot. This was back in summer 2012 I think.

I do remember the food right around the area is great. Went to a restaurant that is right on the beach, but cant remember the name. Dukes or something I think. Also some asian place that was in a basement kinda place. Also a place on the north side that had some great burgers, on the ocean too.

Like you said, walking up to Diamond Head is nice, and some interesting things to see around the area if you just walk which is what I did. Pearl Harbor should be a must, but I didn't get a chance when I went. Most of my time was eating/shopping and laying on the beach all day. We did go north side one day and I remember there was an overlook but again, I cant remember it's name. It wasnt a bad walk to it (drive most of the way). It was very windy but a fantastic view. Sorry for not remembering names. I simply remember it was pretty high up and windy lol. I'll look it up.

As for flying, which some have asked...I went through Lexington to Dallas to Honolulu. Pretty simple, but Dallas airport was a mess. Give yourself plenty of time in between connections. Going back we went overnight to Chicago then to Lexington. Was a pain, but if you can sleep going to Chicago where you lose hours it's not terrible.

kailua-pali-lookout.jpg

Quick google search and this is the lookout I went to. I don't remember how to get there or where it really is, because our friend who lives there drove us there. Kailua or something from what I see.
