kailua-pali-lookout.jpg

Quick google search and this is the lookout I went to. I don't remember how to get there or where it really is, because our friend who lives there drove us there. Kailua or something from what I see.

Pali Point/Pali Lookout, short for Nuuanu Pali Lookout.

I recommend this as well and the drive up to the point is great.

Ono Hawaiian foods.

Helena's Hawaiian food.

Neither one is fancy, but both are really good.

Must try I'd say is Opal Thai(call ahead to make reservations). Also on the same road is The Grass Skirt Grill! Hole in the wall place with mostly outdoor seating but the food is excellent! We ate there at least 3 times during the week we were there. They are both in Haleiwa.

Ka'ena Point light house is a great place for sun sets.

Note, it looks as if the light house may be gone...

Booked a shark dive out of North Shore. I need to get under the water a bit. We also have been told to skip the Luau's.

That's good advice. Our BBQ tastes better than theirs and poi flat out sucks.

I agree with GAVol to an extent about the food, but it's a luau and not a 5 star restaurant. If you've never been to a luau and you're not sure you're ever making it back to Hawaii any time soon it's the experience and the entertainment of it all that's worth it. If you have an open evening I'd highly recommend the PCC, Polynesian Cultural Center luau followed by the "Ha - Breath of Life" show. Very much worth it! To top it off you're learning a bit about the culture and supporting not only the locals but a LOT of college students.

I recommend going to a luau if you don't plan on going to hawaii again. The only one I've been to on Oahu was the Kodak Waikiki luau which was actually pretty fun but it's no longer around. Of course there are a lot of tourists, but locals go too for special occasions and such. If you think you'll be back to the islands, I would hold off and go to the old lahaina luau on maui.

That's a good point. The luau is definitely more of a cultural thing to witness than a fine dining experience. I guess it's worth seeing one time but they always feel uber touristy.

I have a friend who's parents lived on Oahu for about 8 years. She said to make sure you do the Haiku stairs If we are looking for an adventure. My wife's cousin was stationed there for 7 years and he said to eat at the oceanarium and to pass on the dole plantation but go snorkeling at sharks cove.

We leave on Jan 24 and I'm pumped.

My family had a good time at Dole. The smell around Dole and driving down the roads near the pineapple fields is amazing. It doesn't take any time at all really to visit Dole.

Sharks Cove was rather fun. We wound up there two days out of the week playing in the water and snorkeling. When the water would crash over the wall it would create a current through the cove that you could body surf while snorkeling. While this was rather fun I had to be careful not to slam into the rocks doing it.

There is a Foodland grocery store on Pupukea Rd. right near Sharks Cove. We just bought some inexpensive snorkel gear there and then donated it to the house we were renting since our luggage was already crammed full. You can also get it at the local Walmart too but it's a bit of a drive depending on where you're staying.

If you like to get drunk, the Hale Koa has $3 Mai Tai's with a military ID. If you don't have a Military ID, the Kani Ka Pila Grille, at the Outrigger Reef, has $4 Mai Tai's during happy hour.

Booked a whale watching tour on a catamaran. Booked an early morning shark dive on north shore so we can drive back to waikiki and make stops on the way. Is there is a temple somewhere in the mountains that people say is a must do?

We kept a set of these for visitors to use. Just pop it in your cd player as you drive around and it gives you history and land mark info along the way.
