I know it takes Martin several years to write the books and he has a couple more to go. I would imagine they will have to split a couple of the next books into two seasons.

He has 5 books now and from what I've read, they are going to cover 1 book per season.

Martin has said in several interviews that he envisions a 7 book series and with the latest book, he has already got a lot of the source material for Book 6.
