HBO's True Detective

Off the top of my head I can't think of any show or movie that makes the religious guy the bad guy. I know it's happened, but I can't think of any off the top of my head, let alone a trend.

You better get ready for disappointment. All signs seem to point to this being the work of a religious cult.

Gates of Hell, Prophecy, just to name a few off the top of my head.

I remember being at Johnson City Boy's Club Summer Camp around 1987 or so, and them playing Gates of Hell with their newly purchased VCR one night. It started with 50 or so kids watching, and ended up with only about 6 kids left at the end. My brother and I made it easily, but that is due to be raised on horror movies by our mother. She once tricked us into watching Friday the 13th (I was around 10 and my brother was 7) by telling us it was Meatballs type Summer Camp movie. No wonder I am warped.

Wow. You guys are all over this.

The King in Yellow is free for Kindle:

Also, when Ledoux was alive the scene of him in his underwear with the gas mask and machete made him look like a perverted psycho, but now that he's dead, makes more sense as attire for being a meth cooker.

Marty's wife's family has money. What does the father in law do? I'm thinking he has friends in high places.

Sorry I'm blasting this thread, but I figured you guys are as big of geeks as I am, and I'm saving you the trouble of researching this shiz.

One cool theory people keep talking about is that MM is still in deep undercover, even in 2012. That's why from day 1 he's been such an outsider with Woody and the rest of the force, and why his records are sealed, etc. He may have never even had a wife and kid, just made up back story.

The theory suggests that WH is the yellow king or deeply involved. Maybe his father-in-law? Some serious symbolism. The devil catchers are near WH in many scenes. When they interview people they seem to react oddly to WH, like the LSU athlete, the coroner, the old man talking about the girl who disappeared. Also, at the country bar a yellow spotlight shines on both Woody's wife and his mistress.

Not sure I buy Woody's involvement, but it's convincing.

Kevin Spacey was a religious nut in Seven. But certainly not a trend as some believe.

I was thinking more that religion, or a religious figure, is an easy target and I'd hate to see such a smart show end with fizzle rather than a bang.

It's like when a horror movie involves children. What makes that "scary" is taking an object that is supposed to be safe and innocent (the child) and attaching a ghost or demon or some supernatural element to it. Insidious, The Conjuring, Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist, The Sixth Sense, Poltergeist just to give a few examples. It's all designed

Making the preacher man the bad guy follows the same theme of turning innocence into evil. It's a cheap thrill mixed with lazy, unoriginal writing.

I do believe it is the father-in-law given the story with the daughter (the dolls, her behavior).

Not always. In the right hands it could feel original, and to do that is far from lazy. So I will reserve judgement until I see the finished product. If anything so far, this show is far from lazy or unoriginal. That said I believe it is a red herring, and the father-in-law is the true twist. Of course I am pretty sure I'm wrong.

Thanks for the articles and insights on this great show. I look forward to each Sunday to see every new twist they add. I normally don't watch shows like this so I am impressed with everything thus far.

eff it. I have a 3 hr window and am starting back at ep 1 right now.

First body was found on the birthday of Cohle's deceased daughter. That was one minute in and I just caught it. When the body was found, Cohle said, "this goes way back with him", in referring to the killer.

I gotta stop. I'll turn it into a running blog.

We need a running "notebook" on this thread anyway for the avid viewers, or people who don't have time to examine as closely.

Yes please. I think that would be great.

My level of obsession with this show is becoming unparalleled, as is the utter brilliance of the show.

Acting, writing, cinematography, you name it...you rarely find anything on the big screen as flawlessly executed as True Detective, much less on the small screen.

MM might win an Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club but I can't imagine his acting being much better than what we've seen so far.

Oh, and the intro song...first time I heard it, not that bad but not that impressed either. Not now. Just as dark and brooding as the show, love it.

Can't wait for Sunday's.

The background music in this show is creepy. It reminds me of this game I played years ago where Nine Inch Nails did the soundtrack for it. There's a scene in the latest episode where WH is being interviewed by the two detectives and they're playing that music. I can't find it to post though.

If it's true that there is a conspiracy then let me ask..
What is the crime ring exactly? So far we've scene a combination of child and prostitute rape and murders, add in the huge meth business?

If other cops and "higher ups" are involved(which is seeming more and more likely) what are they getting out of this whole thing and how can they all turn a blind eye to everything and cooperate?

What exactly is the end game here?

This most definitely has religious undertones and influences but I don't think the church is the lead by any means. Most likely just involved.

I could be wrong but I'm going to go ahead and assume the meth thing is pretty irrelevant. If anything, meth might just be involved to sort of "justify" the true psychotic nature of what's really going on here.

Again I could be way off, but I've pretty much been dismissing that aspect of it as being pretty common around this type of crime.

I think it's more of a cult or lifestyle/religion that is passed down from generation to generation. It's an old boy network of raping and rituals. It grew to the point that they were building schools and grooming some fo the children for an eventual sacrifice.

Pervs in the Louisiana woods molesting and murdering missing children and vagrant prostitutes.

It's HBO so I think it's deeper than that.
