I wish him the best, still would've enjoyed having him in Knoxville, but he'll do just fine at BYU....

Can't blame him for choosing the school that best suits his faith. And there have been some darn good QBs that came from BYU.

Good luck to him.

I wish him the best of luck.

There have been some great QBs to come from BYU but I tend to think an elite player will develop better/faster against tougher competition.

It also amazes me that mormonism gets treated like a legitimate faith while others are universally derided as being "cultish." Would people be applauding him for committing to a school of scientology?

Edit: Not trying to flame SGM

Thank you Rasputin Vol and utmba93 for getting the mandatory closing statements in on this recruit on the very first page. We run a tight ship around here and you two did your part.

he was really gonna be a longshot for anyone on the far east coast like sc or ut, most recruiting gurus had a felling in the back of their mind that heaps was either wash or byu.

This is the 1 thing that upsets me. Fans of college teams hope a player doesn't do something that they really want to do.
There is no reason to think that the mission is something Mormons are tasked to do. They do it because it means something to them and they want to do it.

And I doubt Ainge was Mormon, or else he would have gone on a mission, just like Mapu.

Not all mormon's take the mission. You are correct that it is not tasked to them. It is expected of them, though.

Part of my problem with the Tebow praise is the fact that nearly all mormon athletes do more charity work than Tebow and nothing gets mentioned of it.

I'm not a fan of the religion but they do a lot of charitable work and get very little credit for it in the media. Yet Tebow takes a much shorter missionary trip, brings camera crews along and he gets proclaimed as the greatest human being of all time. He also wasn't living in the conditions that a lot of mormon missionaries put up with. Complete crap.

:eek:lol: I have a feeling USCjr's problem is not distance.

I thought about editing my post to mention that if Ainge was Mormon he'd have gone on a mission because he had the family money to sponsor it, with his uncle and all...
That's generally how it works, though. Boys go on the mission if they want to go, and can afford it. I'd put my money on the Heaps family being able to afford it, since they probably saved money for both the mission and college, and now only 1 will have to be paid for.
And for the record, most devout Mormons want to go on the mission. And a Mormon that chooses to go to BYU is probably devout to the point he'll be going on the mission.

Heaps to BYU I'd a great decision for him. It makes a lot of sense.

Bye Heaps.

It is the perfect fit for him but I'll always wonder "what if" I wish him nothing but the very best.

I wonder if he'll someday wonder... 'what if.' I'd say he has a lot more to lose in the decision than do the Vols.

We'll get a great QB and help him find his way to the League. I don't know if BYU will do as much for Heaps as we do for whoever we sign.

Yeah, excellent point and nice job squeezing the 'Cocks in there as a candidate. I actually think Heaps list went something along the lines of:

1.) BYU
2.) Washington
3.) Tennessee

.
118.) Western Kentucky
119.) South Carolina

Exactly. Jake's career plans certainly didn't include pumping gas.

You left out a lot of D2 schools between WKU and South Carolina. And, there's also the option of just giving up on football altogether that might rank higher than SCjr.
