Helmetgate

The thing that scares me is that if Fulmer allowed the team to get here, is he the one to get it out of this funk? I know there's a big argument for and against Fulmer but you have to start looking at the mental and emotional problem here. Fulmer is the one who allowed it to get to this point. Will keeping him cause this attitude to proliferate? Or can he honestly turn this attitude around?

I just never in a million years would have EVER thought this team would be at this point. I know teams have slumps and rebuilding years, etc. but this is far more than all of those and seems to only get worse each week.

Hey... Kentucky's our BOWL GAME next week... the Cats had better watch out!!!

Our bowl game was 9/24. We worked backwards this year. UK might as well be the Orange and White Game for us. Drop the seniors and play the younger ones. The Seniors lost at home their last game. Odds are they don't want to go out and give all but woould rather stay healthy for the pros....

As I read this thread, I see the names of some of the posters I most respect. However, let's get real. The talent on this team is wildly overrated. Poor coaching may explain losses to Florida and Alabama, but losses to South Carolina and Vanderbilt tell me this team flat isn't that good. Name a team in D-I that has had more pathetic QB play than we have. For all the talk of our talent at receiver,  name one guy on our roster you would actually count on to catch a cluch pass. The O-Line can't move VANDERBILT enough to convert 4th and 6 inches. The talent drain that began with Fulmer allowing Rodney Garner to go to Georgia, because Fulmer thought RG got too much credit, has finally come home to roost. Furthermore, given how incompetent this staff has proven to be, why would anyone put faith in their ability to evaluate talent?

I have to disagree with you regarding the talent. We have plenty of physical talent, in fact our problems stem partially from having too much talent. We have a dozen or more kids, 4*/5* rated coming out of high school just taking a stop at UT on their way to the NFL. We have too many such WRs for sure. Those guys have turned out to be candy asses. Everyone on this team(offense) is so worried about themselves (except some like Foster) themselves that they have destroyed our team.

How in the world do these guys get up for Kentucky next week?

You get up for the game because, first and foremost, you're an athlete with the individual and personal pride that no matter what happens around you, you will always show to play.

If you truly do not contain this element of pride, this inetrior drive inside, then you are not an athlete at all.

Fulmer appears to have lost his team in more, deeper ways than he was aware of.  I think this whole thing is really surprising to him.

I believe you're correct and wrong at the same time. I believe Phil knew, in his heart, that something was akwardly wrong but he had no way of derailing this runaway train. :(

Nothing of this, imo, can be disagreed with. This whole group of players and coaches, except for Phil and Chavis Gourp (except Slade andI give Phil one more season) must go. The seniors and juniors, God love 'em, need to be moved along quickly.

The pestilence is deep rooted, it cannot be removed, it must be exited with the players and coaches.

Returning seniors, God help you.

Alabama did something similar to this back in 2000.

And they went out and got a new coach after that, too.

Not saying we should, but major changes occured.

I was at the game yesterday and also stayed until this morning. I was watching the sports call in show after fulmer's show ends and they were talking about how Albert Toeiana spit on a camereman out of frustration. They also talked about how about 10 UT players left their helemts on the field and just walked to the locker rooms for the managers to pick up. This is disgraceful. THese players including Toeina should be benched the next game I dont care who they are. These players are not actiing they should when you wear the T on the side of the helmet. Just wanna know everyone else's thoughts

It just shows u how poorly coached they really are. Why should they care what they do at this point, if they were to get benched next week, which they wont, no so called coach on the team has the guts or balls to bench anyone or they would have done it a long time ago, Why would they care.

I agree with you,no matter who the players were that threw the helmets & left them on the field they shouldn't be allowed to play against UK,your right that shows how poorly they
have been coached & Disciplined, not much you can do to the
seniors right now but for the jr's,so & fr the coaches gotta get their heads out of their tails and lay down the law get strict
and stick with it, DISCIPLINE is what they need with a capital D!

discipline certainly is a major problem for this team, and has been for a few years. The coaches should really consider something new to how they handle their players off the field. What used to work isn't working anymore.

Kids will do right up to the line what they think they can get away with. This should be an illustration of what they can and can't get away with. Next spring practice should be nothing short of a marine corps bootcamp.

actually fulmer has already decided to bench toeina if he found out this were true. he is looking into the issue.

good post duck.

this is just proof that Fulmer has no control over these guys. alot of our players seem to be punks and thugs. are we the university of thugs now?

just pathetic. all who did it should sit out the kentucky game.

until fulmer gets some discipline on rocky top. it will continue to be ROCKY up there.

i have a bad feeling about next year too.

this sucks guys. i am so disappointed in the whole football department that i want to puke.

Exactly. In the old days, I remember when we had to ask coach for permission to take our helmets off.

...lol I think they got it on cam
as for those who left their helmets on the field ...leave em at home and let them ponder wheather they will have a scholarship next year or not

all in all it's inexcusable and an embarrassment

I think this might be the watermark for how much fulmer is really going to change. IMO all those folks should at least not start the next game. If Toneia did in fact do this, he should at least face not starting, and possibly benched for the game. That is beyond unacceptable. Have some class.

CPF has already said that if it was true, Toeina would be on the bench.

Just talked to my folks in Kville, and they said 2 things on the helmet deal. First, that Phil had already called Toeina and that it was a done deal- he's not going to Lexington.

What might be even more disturbing is that such a big deal was made about the helmets (including by Vol vets on the t.v. call in show this morning) that there's some question about the other helmet owners going, much less starting.

The reason that could be huge is that the helmets were all down on the side of the field where the offense had been desperately failing to get the win just moments before.... Dad said that was just an observation- he hasn't heard yet who the helmets belonged to- but.....

That said, as bad as losing players off our already struggling O would be, how much worse could they play- so couldn't we actually afford to lose more O players than defenders?

who cares if we can't afford it?! we cant let this crap go on any longer. if we do it is going to really hurt us in the long term. weve been complaining about discipline all year and this should be a way to send the message.

Agreed about Toeina, but not the others. They should have to sit out the first half, then do all the managers' dirty work this week and after the game.

I actually meant to add your point at the end of my post- Isn't this a great opportunity for Fulmer to make a start on announcing he's decided to metamorph himself into a disciplinarian.

1. Why do you have to hit rock bottom to make necessary changes?

2. Is this about rock bottom, or do we need to lose to Kentucky to arrive at rock bottom, usa?

1. Because we have an inbred administration and staff
2. It doesn't matter what happens Saturday, so root for a win.

just the 1st half wont cut it. fulmer has to enforce the right amount of discipline for the team. lea ving helmets on the field for the managers to pick up is basically saying that they are on a higher level and supererior to the managers. this should not be tolerated at all.

I read somewhere that Fulmer did say he was going to play a lot of 'youngsters' in the KY game..........we'll see.
