I don’t like Fowler, but there is no need to misrepresent what he said. He spoke about the “trailer-park frenzy” over the Manning Heisman snub. That’s a far cry from suggesting all of our fans are trailer trash…we’re not from Kentucky for Pete’s sake.
Far cry? Hardly.

Ler them grudges go folks. All this righteous indignation is hilarious. 🤣
We have good ole Uncle Gary on tap this week down in Athens. My only wish is that Verne could come out of retirement for this one....GoVols
To my knowledge, he had never apologized for that comment. If he had, then I agree with you and will forgive him.. sort of.

Don't let them fool you, ESPN is loving the Tennessee is back Narrative and milking it.

They love anything that drives hype and we are driving hype this year. Now 3-4 years down the road when we are still back, they will turn on us and cheer for another underdog.

People just love underdogs and we are considered the underdog right now because of the last 15 years.
Just like when Kiffin was here. They were talking about Tennessee football in February.

Hmm, Boro, that's pretty much what he meant by trailer park frenzy. That the average Tennessee fan lives in a trailer park and we're all there together in a frenzy over the Heisman snub.

Trailer park frenzy == trailer trash, when you're a tea-sipping, tennis-watching Connecticut liberal.

Right. But the poster put quote marks around it as if that was the direct quote from Fowler, and BoroVol was right to correct it.

It is intellectually dishonest to whip up resentment against someone by faking a quote from 25 years ago.

Fowler is a troll, and:

Some trolls try to troll, but they don't do it right.
They try to chew their food without taking a bite.
And swallow it whole, only to gag and choke;
When the other guy just forces it down their throat.

They both seemed uncomfortable with each other. I remember when there was about 7 minutes left in the game with both teams running out the clock and they ran out of anything meaningful to say. Both were just gobbly-gook speak and Herb basically said" we've got 7 minutes to kill and need something to talk about". They don't seem like they even like each other....just going thru the motions.

Herbstreit does not “hate” the Vols no matter how many of our fans try to drive that narrative. He’s been ridiculously complimentary the past few weeks. If you’re still mad at him at this point, you’re just looking to hate him because it’s more fun that way for you. At the end of the day, he’s supposed to try to be an unbiased commentator so he’s going to point out our flaws sometimes or pump other teams up. It’s his job to do that.

Yah, you never know with media types. So much of their professional life is fake, scripted, driven by the person talking in their ear, you never know what's real with them.

But I did get the same impression. That the two, once pretty darn close friends, are now just professionally cordial and might even be cool toward each other in private.

Who knows. Who really cares. I despise Fowler, and don't mind if Herbie and others join me. But I do appreciate Herbstreit probably a bit more than most folks on these boards.

Go Vols!

Agreed...in college Al Wilson was the undisputed leader of the defense and team, and the AAmerican too. Fowler is a Connecticut liberal though...where did Thompson play all his Pro Bowl seasons?? You guessed it. The Patriots. His home team up there in dbag country. So he was a huge fan. Makes sense. Bet Fowler was frothing at the mouth pulling for his Brady led Patriots every time they played Peyton and the Colts...or knocked them out of the playoffs. Lots of good reasons to dislike Fowler.

I didn’t take it that way. Al Wilson was the obvious one to bring up, so when Fowler heard Shaun Ellis and Raynoch mentioned, it was like a lightbulb went off and he remembered how great they were. Raynoch was probably the 2nd or 3rd best player on our defense in ‘98, and he was the leader in ‘99 (which IMO, the ‘99 UT defense is the best defense I have ever seen as a Vol fan. I’ve been following UT football since about 1993).

Like a married couple who knows it’s over but neither have the courage to file for divorce. They’ll keep at this until Fowler retires

Providing this thread mostly for those who were in the stadium, or others who watched on TV but muted and synced the radio play calling to it.

You missed Herbie browbeating Fowler for pretty much the entirety of the game for not giving enough credit to the Vols' accomplishments this year.

For instance...

At one point, they were talking about the energy of the fan base. Fowler said something snide, like, "Yeah, I guess you can forgive their exuberance." Herbstreit looked over at him, then replied: "Forgive it? I honor it. I bow down to it. The loyalty and hunger for excellence of this fan base is something to respect!"

That's not an exact quote, going off memory. But Fowler was clearly thinking back to the "exuberance" of us lighting him up 20 years ago for his 'trailer trash' comment, and was 'forgiving' us in his head. Blow that out your butt, Fowler, we don't need your forgiveness. Herbie told it strraight.

For instance...

Herbie gave his guess at how the first CFP rankings will look, just the top 4 spots. And he had the Vols at #1. And then he started ragging on Fowler to give his prediction. And hounded him, over and over, until he finally did. At one point, Kirk called Fowler a chicken, lol.

It went on like that all evening. Herbstreit complimenting the Vols, or Hendon for Heisman, or Heupel and Golesh for their play-calling, or whatever, and then needling Fowler until he agreed they were awesome. All. game. long.

Herbie has been a douche a little bit since the Schiano thing, and did pick against us vs FL and Bama, but he showed up in orange (figuratively) last night, and held Fowler accountable for having an anti-Tennessee bias the whole time.

Thought you'd like to know that happened.

Go Vols!

EDIT and p.s. Almost forgot to mention: Fowler really tried, I mean tried hard, to pursue the "Levis is Superman" storyline. He stuck with it all the way into the 3rd quarter, until the reality of what was happening on the field became too much even for him to pretend any more. Then he just stopped talking about it.
Herbert is enough of a businessman to sense the change in the wind. Sort of like Finebaum

Herbstreet and Fowler are an embarrassment to ESPN and part of the ongoing irrelevance in the world of college sports, they continue to want to pick winners and losers rather than simply report the happenings on the field and perhaps that is why they are so obsolete in the SEC. While the SEC Network travels on the ESPN rails, it is so much more palatable than anything on ESPN.

I agree we shouldn't misrepresent what happened. Totally.

However, "trailer park frenzy" is equivalent to the stereotypical statement that "those Tennesseans all live in trailer parks" which, when deemed necessary to say, is a clear indication that you think those people are "trailer trash."

Prove me wrong.

I'll take a swing at this, because it precisely captures the mistake so many seem to make here lately - being comfortable conflating a persons character with the argument being discussed.

The true quote criticized an action, the fake one would have criticized their actual character. These two things are very different. You will screw up at some point, but that doesn't mean you are a screwup. See the diff?

As for the trailer park, he is drawing an analogy. And he's not saying they ARE trailer trash or screwups, or whatever. They just behaved that way during the action being discussed.

You draw a legitimate distinction.

However, linkage between "trailer park" and frenzy is still tantamount to stereotyping. Had he made reference to "Tennessee fan base frenzy," that would have been a fact-based observation, but Fowler just had to reach into his oratorical bag for a phrase that would conjure up images of classic look-down-your-nose, redneck Southern stereotypes. In some circles, Southerners remain the one demographic that one can belittle and still escape criticism.

Fair enough.

I see the "trailer park frenzy" as more classist than anything else, but perhaps that's because I see trailer parks everywhere around the country. I don't associate them with the south.

No. No. No. Let Verne and myself both enjoy his retirement.

As far as Gary goes well rather than my usual ranting about him which is just beating a dead horse, I am just going to find a Tweet about him. Yes I know I am still beating a dead horse but hopefully this will be more comical. Here is a nice one from the Alabama Arkansas game that will work

Herbie is just kissing our Tennessee (_)_)'s and trying to get back in good with us again.

I'll never forget or forgive him for hurling all his crap at us over the years.

He's a rich (_)_)hole that lives in Belle Meade and he thinks he's better than everyone else.

He should be a tree that all dogs use to pee on.

He can kiss my bright Orange Tennessee (_)_) forever but my opinions and attitude towards him will NEVER change!!!

He already showed his true colors and who he really is.

I could enjoy walking up to him and spitting in his face and tellinng him exactly what I think of him and why but I won't do that.

UNlike Herbie I have much more class and dignity than to do something like that despite how much I might enjoy doing that, LOL!

Keep kissing those Tennessee (_)_)'s Herbie, you might fool some people over time but NEVER those if us that know how you really are deep onside yourself!

Go Vols, stomp those UGa bullFrawgs!!!

VFL...GBO!!!
Lol yes you sound very classy indeed based on this post
