Hiking Thread

My Mom hikes in flip flops, and it drives her crazy that everyone comments on it. Literally, everyone comments on it.

I love day hikes. If anybody is ever in the valley of the sun, hit me up. I'll show you some good spots.

Turns out I posted in this thread a year ago.

Anybody do Slick Rock in NC? I remember doing that as a kid and loving it.

Easy 3 mile hike today. Massacre Grounds in Tonto National Forest

Took the whole family and my aging parents to Max Patch on Sunday. You don't often get views like that without having to work for them, so it's a special place. Short 1/4 mi gentle uphill walk to huge grassy fields with a 360 degree view. We picnicked, flew kites, and relaxed for 3 hours.

I hiked/ran up the Lone Oak Trail into the White Top Trail to the crest of Buffalo Mountain today. I'll post some pics from my phone later.

It's hiking season yall. Anyone got any good hikes planned? I'm thinking of doing a stretch of the AT in May.

Went on an 11 mile hike last weekend to the beach. Took about 4 hours

It is! Crazy we've been able to hike a bit already - I think most weekends in February we hiked. Have not hiked the last two weekends, but we are ready to get back at it this weekend. Not sure where yet though.

Plans this fall was to take a new England states hiking tour, but that might all be changed with my sister being deployed to Italy. Finally get to go hike in Croatia.

Heading up Mount Rainier in August
Medicine Bow Range in Wyoming - July
Colorado - Sawatch Range - July

Charlie's Bunion on the AT hopefully in May. Anyone ever done this? I hear it is outstanding.

Gonna do some in Yellowstone and Grand Tetons in September. We went to the Red river gorge this past weekend and did a couple of small hikes.

Hiking in the Tetons is like no other hike/place I have ever been. If you want a great quick (but steep) hike check out Mount Glory. You could also add on Mount Elly.

My knees are too shot to go vertical much anymore. I have to do the sissy hikes, good thing is, in the Tetons those are still spectacular. This is actually the second time we're going there. We took the family in 2011 also. There were a few hikes that we wanted to do, but weren't able to last time. Going to try to go up Death Canyon and Cascade canyon this time hopefully.

I'm hitting BSF next next weekend. Gonna hike Laurel Creek loop (my choice), to Maudes Crack and to the arches (easier for my wife). She is not outdoorsy. So I took it easy on her. Gonna take my new German shepherd with me!

Both of those canyons are great hikes. The good thing about Cascade Canyon is you can take a boat across Jenny Lake and cut out a few miles of nothing special trail. I remember you talking about this trip last year, I know you must be stoked about it.

Yes I am really stoked. It kinda sucks, we were supposed to go in June, but we had to move it back to September because my DiL and SiL both got new jobs and won't be able to take vacation till Sept. However on the bright side, last time we were out in early June 20011, the trails into the canyons were no go because of the heavy snow that remained, the farthest we could go was Hidden falls. We did the boat then. I'm a trip research fanatic. :)

September is a better time to be there, much less crowded and as you said snow can be an issue in June. This was a huge winter so snow will be hanging around for a while I am sure. Of course the days are shorter and there is usually a pretty good snowstorm, but overall the weather in September is great.

I'd like to go that route too so that I can spend as much time on top taking photos and enjoying the scenery. Is there a marker for the GBT along the PB road? I've only seen videos and it looks to be a narrow road without any places to park.

It's a one way road with many turnouts. Unfortunately the park service doesn't deem it a priority to clear so as of now it remains 'temporarily closed to vehicles'. I am still advocating the clean up of this resource. We will see what they decide
