I'm not fond of getting too personal with bears, as harmless as they may be.
But then again, how often do you get personal with the bears? Really, of the couple dozen wild bears I've he wild , none have been aggressive bears. Bears are actually quite stand-off towards humans. Experts agree there. And my own personal experience agrees. If they have interest in humans, then it is probably because aren't the natural wild bear; natural wild bear tends to keep its distance around a human, even if hungry or even if cub is nearby and so on. I've approached and even provoked bear. They are, in my own estimation, rather timid animals. Just saying. Don't spray bears just cause they are bears. :)

I prefer to have the spray, ,rather than winding up wishing that i had it.

Need a good entry level backpacking tent for bicycle touring, any recommendations? I've been back and forth between a 1-man, 2-man, bivy sack, and bivy structure.

Hammock all the way. You will sleep so much better.

I had an Eagle Nest Outfitters hammock last year and the damn thing would never stay in the trees. I would always be on the ground within an hour of falling asleep. I sleep great on the ground anyways. Plus, a good tent can be set up and taken down in under 5 minutes - and since I'll be using it in some backcountry endurance bike racing, I'll need it to be quick and easy. I'm leaning away from a bivy because I'm claustrophobic and I sweat like a pig. For races like Trans Iowa, which is a 36 hour race across Iowa, a bivy might be best since I'll only be sleeping for a few hours at a time at the end of April and I'll be sweaty the entire time anyways.

Not to knock you, but it seems like something was not right with your suspension on the eno. There are some good 1 person units out there, I just can't suggest any as I hang.

Mt. Leconte via the boulevard and then down Alum Cave is the best hike in GSMNP in my humble opinion.

How many of us have hiked or are currently hiking the Appalachian Trail? I have done 172 miles this year and hopefully I will get another 50 in before Jan.

i beg to differ.

nc will prosecute if u shoot them. bear spray can be a safe, harmless and effective way to scare them off. nothing else scares them.

I spent a summer "working" in YNP. Every day off was spent hiking. Did over 300 miles of various trails and barely scratched the surface. The great thing about YNP is the diversity of the terrain from the north Roosevelt location to Canyon (where I worked), the Lake and Old Faithful. It's like four different parks.

One day I plan to take the wife and kids out there for a few weeks.

the ball and chains cousins have a place outside of W Yellowstone in Big Sky, we're gonna use that as a point to go back and forth. cant wait to visit lake again.

trip note: try the pizza at lake employee pub. its better than canyons dinky ass employee pub. canyon punks always tried to sneak over and mix with us, but we were onto their tricks. we shut em down! we dont mix with canyon trash.

😛

how long did that take you mack? we live jn asheville, frequent hs. would be interested in mp to hs hike.

We started at 1 from MP, at camp 8 miles down the trail at 530. 12 miles the next day left camp at 930 and was in Hot Springs by 345. Mildly easy hike, just long. last 5 miles before HS there was no water and I did the last 3.5 without.

I caught the sunrise at Carver Gap this am, Round Bald. AWESOME!!! The only drawback is you cant see the sun as it breaks the horizon, Grassy RIDGE (I think, 3rd bald) prevents it. There was some fog but it looked really cool laying in the valleys.

I also went to Jones Falls & Elk River Falls. There were a lot of people out looking at all the leaves.

Why not just do a fly setup? Super light and simple. Two trees, some ultra light tent stakes, and piece of plastic between you and ground are all you need.

Just did 20 from Max Patch to Hot Springs this weekend. I see you are in JC also. mackcooke@hotmail.com if you want a hiking buddy.

How far along were the leaves at Max Patch?? I'm going up there tomorrow. Hopefully I timed it right.

I caught the sunrise on Carvers Gap, Round Bald earlier this week. UNREAL!! Leaves still moderately changing there.

Gonna hit the Creeper Trail this week!!
