Ottawa in five, I think. The Sens have too much offense, and the Penguins' blue line is too young. Crosby's a great player, but he's about to learn that it's a different game in the playoffs.

Dany Heatley can eat it, though. I'd like to see your team wipe the glass with his face a few times.

(He is widely loathed in Atlanta. The hockey fans here strongly supported him after he killed a teammate in a driving accident 75 yards from my house, and in return he demanded a trade. He can go right to hell.)

I could not root for a team whose mascot is a leaf. Yeah! Go leaves! We're gonna fall on you and then fall to the ground!

hmmm....

you do know that Leafs is short for Maple Leafs, the symbol on the flag of the country?

oh yeah. nothing like wanting to get out of the city where you had a life changing incident. also nothing like being reminded of what happended by having to possibly drive by the scene on a day to day basis.

i don't blame the guy.

The utter lack of value of watching hockey on TV is a close second to the boredom factor of women's college basketball. The only hope they have for hockey is to make the puck much more visible and the net a whole lot wider, so there is more scoring.

As is, watching what appears to be a bunch of guys in parka drifting up and back and forth chasing something you cannot quite find on screen and then once every 45 minutes there's a score that you can only actually see on replay ... forget it. Yawnorama.

After the accident, the team stuck behind him, the fans rallied around him. And in return he waited that rest of the year, through the entire lockout season, and right up until play was about to resume before abruptly demanding a trade. He had a year and a half to tell Don Waddell that he didn't want to come back here, but instead he waited until most of the free agents had signed, the roster was pretty well set -- and THEN he demanded a trade. He put the team in a crummy position, and it was widely (and reasonably, I think) regarded as being ungrateful to a team that had really been supportive of him. I do not wish him well.

(Besides, you could live in Atlanta for 30 years and never drive down Lenox Road if you wanted to.)

Excellent post. It's great that you repeatedly come into these threads about things you don't care about in order to announce that you don't care. You have established your superiority once again.

2 OT?? Meanwhile the craptastic VERSUS NETWORK has got the Stars/Canucks matchup. What channel are you watching it on?

It was 4-2 SJ with about 5 minutes left and Preds scored. Then they scored an awesome play with 50 seconds to tie and now they are in their 2nd OT, 20 minutes each.

I just saw the highlights. The same guy that failed to clear the puck and let Nashville score to tie it up ended up winning it for San Jose, right?

VERSUS sucks. At least when ESPN had hockey, they'd always go to the overtime game, because they realize that there is nothing in sports more exciting than overtime in the Stanley Cup playoffs. VERSUS just gives us some shots of Clement sitting at a table telling us that a game is in overtime. THANKS!

The ratings for hockey are just below the 3 a.m. replay of the 2003 New Hampshire paintball championship shown on ESPN Archive, cable channel 35,678.

Come on. Basing your argument on Aggregate Number of Eyeballs is a pretty flaccid effort for a lawyer. Do you spend your evenings watching American Idol and Dancing With the Stars because they're popular? Do you listen to Justin Timberlake and Avril Lavigne? Vox populi, vox Dei, right?

See, the lovely thing about living in a pluaristic society is that it's okay for people to like things that other people don't like. You can watch American Idol; we can watch the hockey playoffs. Other people might want to watch, say, women's basketball. But when you feel the need to go into every single thread about women's basketball or hockey just to tell those fans, YET AGAIN, that their sport is stupid and you don't care about it -- at that point you're not engaging in conversation anymore. At that point you're like one of these dogs who goes around vainly humping all the other male dogs, trying to be the alpha male. And that's never very pretty to watch, is it?

There's absolutely no question that hockey is in serious trouble, largely due to the mismanagement of its incompetent commissioner. How Gary Bettman still has a job is beyond me.

I could write six paragraphs about how Bettman , et al. have screwed up the sport, but his failure to work out a deal to stay on ESPN may be the NHL's death blow. He should have just let them broadcast it for free like NBC if he had to. It's not just that OLN/VERSUS is in so few homes that terrible ratings would be inevitable even if there was a decent amount of interest. The main problem is that once ESPN was no longer carrying the games, it no longer had any motivation to devoting any time to hockey. They don't talk about it on Sportscenter, PTI, etc. And in the world of American sports, if it doesn't happen on Sportscenter, it doesn't happen. For the casual American viewer -- exactly the kind of viewer Gary Bettman has spent his whole tenure messing with the league in order to attract -- hockey has fallen totally off the radar. Nobody on ESPN talks about hockey, so he doesn't ever think about it, and even if he wanted to watch the games, they're on an obscure channel up in the 600s that he probably doesn't get. No wonder the TV ratings are awful.
