Holding Onto 2014 Commits

Let me play devil's advocate for a minute.

Many people on here state if Butch Jones loses a bunch of games this year we will lose our recruits. One guy even gave his odds on here breaking it down per game. I thought that was cute.

But what if a lot of these guys are coming here because they think the current team is a bunch of scrubs and they will have instant playing time? What if these scrubs go out and win 8 or 9 games and suddenly the recruit believes instant playing time is no longer an option? What if winning actually cost us some of these recruits? What if?

I mean what if?

Yep, Bama has been struggling with this exact problem the last few years. They've won so much , I think one year they fell all the way down to #2 in the recruiting rankings.

I think it would speak volumes to this staff's ability to "coach 'em up." How could having a winning record ever be a bad thing?

Even if we win 12 games, a lot of the srubs who win them will not be here next year. The scrubs on the O-line will be gone.

The "flip side to winning" is the inverse of the "moral victory". And it makes no sense to worry about either.

I HATE Ala freakin Bama. It bothers me to have to acknowledge them for their success. Make this thread go away.

These kids know Tennessee might struggle this year but they've made a good relationship with Butch Jones and each other. They're a family and I can't see none of them decommiting regardless what happens this season.

My kids would eat candy all day long if I let them. Recruits want to play right away, but the majority of freshman really can't handle the pressure. For most, it is difficult to just get through the freshman year and all the challenges of college curriculum, practice, conditioning, living independently and fans.

I think the coaches probably say something along the lines of "We would love for you to come in and contribute right away, but if not, you'll get the chance to learn the system, develop your talents and navigate that first year away from home successfully. This program is on the rise and you'll be there for the championships."

Players commit and decommit for several reasons....won loss record in our particular case for the 2014 class is not the reason these players committed....after all they committed to a 5-7 team and knowing it could be the same in the year to come....

read the threads around here of the committed players to date, W/L record has nothing to do with it...

It has and been about building and restoring the Vol Football tradition, the family atmosphere, the confidence the current players are showing, the brick by brick approach, early playing time, no pressure, the buzz, the legency class, the facilities, the new coach and staff selling it.

The 2014 class is already close and have accepted the challenge to rebuild this program....some may decommit for various reasons but it will not be because of the W/L record.

Record will not and has not had a thing to do with it....it will in the future but not next year or 2015 class.

Next subject.....

6-6 or better and they all stay. These recruits are committing to be the foundation of a new program built upon their talents. Anything less than 6-6 and we might have a few decommit but come on 50%?? You gotta be kidding

+2

6 or 7 wins and solid improvement over the year should hold on to most everybody. This class being legacy heavy helps as well. Those kids are not gonna run off very easy.

Thats where this year TKJ and Jalen Vic and a lot more of the recruits have to stay together and focus on the future and dont let a bad game or 2 change your mind, thats where the 3 that i named are very crucial to stay on the other recruits when the going gets tough, brick by brick threw the good and bad.

Id be more worried about losing games and looking incompetent doing it.

We will lose commits. It happens. But how did you come up with those numbers?

I'm thinking that the goal of any football team would be to win football games. As to the OP's question, I think the opposite would be true. We will attract higher level recruits in greater numbers. The players that are afraid to compete would be the only ones purged from the program, not a bad thing IMO.
