Holly Goes To School

Hopefully Hart gives her a year or two to turn things around and to rebuild the program.

Really, how is she going to do that go to coaching school? You can't rebuild if you can't recruit or keep doing the same thing over and over again. She has had four years and the program has headed South. Give Holly two more years and the program will join the ranks of Texas Tech, Old Deminion, Stephen F. Austin and La. Tech.

No way. She needs to be gone today.

I hope Hart has the kahunas and doesn't let UT pull a Fulmer and wait 3 years too long to get rid of an unproductive coach. After being with Pat for years if you haven't learned how to coach by now you aren't going to. Do not delay the inevitable. I can see waiting until the end of the season because it isn't going to get any better but you need to have your candidate list ready, and then pull the trigger. It's embarrassing UT and the fans.

A few lines from the ESPN review of the Stanford game:

STANFORD, Calif. -- It was a game that was, in many ways, a shell of its former self.

*****************************************
But because neither the 14th-ranked Lady Vols nor the 15th-ranked Cardinal look like obvious contenders to be in Indianapolis in April.

The two most storied programs in the history of the game, the standard-bearers in their respective conferences, are looking up at long line of teams with more talent, more potential right now.

Both still have to prove they belong in that line.
******************************************
It wasn't exactly a statement win because Tennessee isn't exactly a statement team right now.
******************************************
I disagree with the statement. Tennessee is making a big statement--we suck and are going to continue to suck until you get a coach who knows what they are doing. This is beyond loyalty. Give Barnes Holly's salary too and let him coach both; can't be any worse.

Please....yeah but it only takes 2-3 for a program to go down to it's knees, just ask Phil.

Someone needs to bring pressure on Hart to do the right thing & get a premier coach. Tennessee has too much tradition to let the program go down the tubes. The Women's Basketball Hall of Fame is in Knoxville for a reason.

Butch said it takes 7 to 8 years..................

Butch came after Dooley screwed it up and it may take years to rebuild the football team, however, the Lady Vol has seven 5 stars and we are not playing up to our potential. How many more 5 stars does Holly need? This isn't like Holly has a bunch of two and no star players. This program is not headed South because of the players it is the coaching. This is headed into a dumpster fire. In the right hands, with what we have on this team, right now, is enough to turn it around.

Rather than continuing to :bash: Holly, just like to reiterate that we lucked out with the SEC schedule.

We play Vandy, Arkansas, & 'Bama twice.

The 4 currently-ranked teams & 3 "honorable mention" teams...once.

Look at the bright side. Those predicting won-loss record for the season would surely be more discouraged if we had the likes of SC or KY twice on our schedule (not counting tournament). Or even some of the "just out of the ranking" teams.

So the outlook could have been worse.

Some might argue with that, of course.
That doesn't change the fact that holly is a bad coach

You guys are just a bunch of negas. Either support our coach or just stop trying to pretend to be a real VFL.

Your the one that needs to decide if you are a real VFL. If you are then how can you stand by and see our program being pulled down by someone who is clearly not the person to lead us. Like her or not she is an absolutely awful coach

I would hope Holly wouldn't need a lot of notes with all those years behind Pat.

Hopefully Hart gives her a year or two to turn things around and to rebuild the program.

We don't need to get things turned around, we are already on top. We have the best name, facilities in the business and 7 McDonalds all americans on the court each day.

We need someone to run it.

The players can't run that offense. She doubles down and blames the players because its the only offense she knows how to coach.

Holly "going to school"? Holy cow...if she can't learn to be a HC after 25 years with Pat Summitt, then what on earth makes anyone think she can succeed? Holly is just a disaster & so far in over her head it's pathetic. Fire her NOW!

This is not her 4th year, more like 20 or more years. She was schooled by the master, and now she cannot execute, so I think she cannot get it done now or in 1-2-3-4 years from now.

Last year Stanford had its worst team in a long time, and we had a better team than this group. I didn't think Russell would make me miss Harrison, but we've are not as good at that spot, for sure. I also didn't think I'd miss Massengale--at all--but we now have NOBODY who can make threes except maybe a power forward/shooter who seldom plays (maybe she should more). We're just a very bad offensive team and a middling defensive team. The good news is that Russell will get better; how much better, it's hard to say. Our players don't seem to get much better over time--and some regress; look at our guards. Nared has lot of potential too. As bad as our half-court offense is, we could struggle in just about every game this year, which has been the case so far.

Side note - it's not just Holly. I get that she runs the team, but unless she tells her assistant coaches to shut it, I would think they would have some input. Lockwood's been an assistant at Tennessee for 11 years so he had 8 or so years under Pat. Elzy and Law have only been with the program since 2012 so there was not really any overlap with Pat, although Elzy has experience as a player.

Point is, why do people think Elzy is a better choice to coach now? Has anyone heard her talk about how she would coach offense and defense in the past?

I get people want a change toot sweet, but what options exist that would be better than where we are at now? we did play great for a 5 minute stretch in the 4th quarter. Why not build on that to turn 5 minutes in to 10 into 20 into an entire game?

Because the team is getting worse than better (Mainly because the overall effort is going down). The five minute burst was simply due to Nared and Graves making some individual plays but as a team, there was no follow through and Stanford quickly regained control.

The Lvs came out looking like they just wanted to get the game over with rather than competing for a win.

In coaching there is an X's and O's component and a player motivation component. Holly has never been great on the first and she seems to have lost the second. A coaching switch is a stop gap to at least try to get the motivational aim and redress whatever locker room problems have arisen. Sometimes a mere change in leadership could make a difference.

However, it seems unlikely that an interim switch will be made so...

If we keep degrading the talent we'll get to the bottom of the SEC in a couple of years.
No one coming in next season so were stuck with what we have minus Graves and Moore.
That leaves us with one post player that would really have to step up her game and it seems unlikely that she will because she hasn't this season.

How silly, Holly is a good coach and by far the best for the job!

Have you seen the way we are playing? What about Holly's coaching insures she can lead the Lady Vols to final 4's? We were the only (top) program to lay an egg in recruiting for 2016. Holly has tried to recruit a post player for the last 4 years and has come up short. When teams go to zone against us we fold. At best the offense is predictable. Our turnovers are way too much. We keep falling down the rankings. We have a head coach who admits she does not know how to correct what is happening to the offense. We have had the same turnover and offense issues for the last four years. This is how good coaches coach? I think not.

What you saw last night was a well coached team vs raw talent and athleticism... Clearly we saw Cooper blow past Standford's guards but she did not finish.. Graves shorter than Kailee and Kaylee Johnson clearly muscled her way in the post she was not afraid to go at McCall.. Nared knocked down crucial shots and got steals... They were able to cut a 20 point lead to 7 but some how still lost by double digits... This team is poorly coached they miss makable shots the coach makes horrible substitutions.. Why did Holly take out Dunbar? Holly does not know when to let her shooters build/gain momentum... Pat would not take out Sidney until she about about 3 or 4 3's.. Standford whom historically can light it up beat us in the paint without Nneka or Chiney wtf.. The 2-3 minutes in the 4 quarter was the best I've seen them play... Once again these girls aren't bad they have zero confidence in their coach.. Any other coach and I do mean any other coach in America would be dying to coach this team or have a player from this roster, this roster is like a bland pot of gumbo seafood gumbo. All the right ingredients but no core flavoring and it's a DAMN SHAME and I hate it for the girls more than I do for Holly... she needs to do some soul searching
