Baloney. Tennessee fans expect, or should, as some are being conditioned to accept less now more and more often, to reach their potential as a program in the respective sports. Each of the three coaches you have listed aren't panned because of some ridiculous notion that they haven't won national championships, it's because they haven't won anything of note or are chronic underachievers relative to the potential of the program. To your examples:
- Jones has won nothing of consequence ever in his career and regularly choked away big leads against good teams. His saving grace thus far is that he is recruiting well and not Derek Dooley. Otherwise, he is a poor game manager who spouts nonsense cliches and gimmicky notions by the bushel.
- Martin is the definition of a mediocre coach, who has made the NCAA tournament exactly one time in his career and, the one time he did, lucked into an easy draw with three NBA players on his roster. His team was saved from another underachieving season by players rallying around a petulant petition by fans. He is already on his way to another dud of a season at Cal, similar to these ones he had here at UT.
- Warlick has perpetually looked overmatched coaching against the better teams in the country and hasn't made a Final Four in a top heavy sport in which she coaches at one of the two, by far, most prominent programs.
So, this hyperbole that Tennessee fans have unrealistic expectations of national championships every year is utterly ridiculous and avoid any sort of rational reflection of the true status of the the program at hand. The reality of the situation is that Tennessee fans have entirely reasonable expectations and the coaches haven't been able to meet these expectations. Anyone who thinks the program is doing fine hasn't been paying attention to the clear underachieving varsity sports have been doing at UT for about a decade now.
I have thought the current LV team lacks chemistry because the various skills the players possess do not mesh well. The easy example being that Carter and Reynolds neither one can shoot or score so having them on the court together creates a gap.
.
Your statement about skills meshing was my view of the "Baby Vols" class. They were good players but their pieces did not fit together well enough to win. When I look at this group, I see a roster of ladies who are plenty athletic but are not terrific basketball players. Their offensive skills are limited. Last year this team struggled to score and lost to Maryland as a result. I see this team having even more trouble putting points on the board. Diamond is the reason they only lost by 10 rather than 20. I am not upset we lost, rather that this game reminds me of the past few years where their "superior" talent doesn't show up consistently to be a final four team. The players and coaches are responsible for this, it isn't either/or.
This game seems to have been a breaking point for a lot of fans.
We have seen some improvement under Holly but there are areas we were waiting to see if she would address. It is clear now they aren't being corrected so it is time to give someone else a shot.
Going 0-for- an entire recruiting class and then getting this sort of play from your deepest and most talented bunch would be enough to get a men's coach fired at a top four program. But letting problems fester and evidencing no clue as to how to address them is really the root of the problem.
The truth is that the AD really doesn't care how many games the women's basketball team wins or what direction the program is heading and Holly isn't going to forgo all of that money coming to her by stepping down so instead of a proactive step being taken we will be subjected to more of the same. It is what it is.
Can we please stop responding to all the Lady Vols hater posts, once we see there names we just skip over it. Cos, Holly in my eyes has done a good job in her three years of coaching, the mighty Lady Vols, no one would have been able to do that but the four or five coaches that have already been mentioned.
Hell it took Dawn 7 years at USC.
Holly, do ya thang. Please go and become uconn fans, since you talk about em so much.
We have the "grass is always greener" complex over a small portion of our fan base. If any fan base should be wary of that, it should be Tennessee fans. We haven't exactly had much success by moving onto other pastures if you know what I mean. Our football and men's basketball coaching circuses over the past 6-8 years can attest to that.
I guess you are going to always have the Legions of the Miserable as one Tennessee legendary coach once said.
At least she tried to make something happen vs Reynolds who stood at the top of the key dribbling the ball. Sure Cooper has her errors but at that moment they were clicking. Poor Carter. I love her but her shooting has gotten worse. Tell me what guard is a better option right now?
When all is said and done Hart doesn't give a shyatt about the women's basketball program.
He may not care and his handling of the pat summit situation demonstrated much of that. However, I still think he has a vested interest in making sure lady vol basketball doesn't completely sink into oblivion. I think holly could be in trouble if we fail to make the NCAA tournament this year, which most likely won't happen, but I've learned to never say never..
I think The LadyVols will lose 7-10 games and their seed in the NCAA Tournament will be a good deal lower than fans are used to. Hopefully changes will be made after that but i'm not holding my breath.
At noon Tuesday press conference, Dave Hart gave a glowing affirmation that he thinks Holly is the right person for the job.
You can probably watch it on utsports.com
Folks it does not matter if you are a Holly fan or a Holly hater, this program is in an offensive funk. That is not B.S. that is a fact. Only the coach and her staff can figure this thing out, they are suppose to know their players. We have had this offensive funk for at least 5 years. We are having a difficult time finding the post players we need to continue to run our inside offense plans. These are facts no matter how many times we point fingers and call each other names. Also sarcasm is not going to solve the offensive problems.
If you are a die hard fan it is difficult to accept reality. No matter what, reality has set in. To change that reality we must depend upon the coaches evaluating what they have and then coming up with a good offensive plan. Again the D is good but WE MUST FIND SOME offense or we will be lucky to make it to the elite 8.
