Hope our players realize

And yet, you ignored my post where I said, for the second time, that there isn't some mass test coming. That's not reality.

First of all, it would violate UT's in-house testing policy, which is made up of a set amount of random tests of players that are randomly selected.

In case you missed it, this is what I said earlier:

Tests are not coming. Thinking that a head coach cares significantly whether his players smoke pot is extremely naïve.

Any players that test positive on the usual random tests do not face suspension or dismissal. You don’t face any sort of punishment that significant until the third positive test. Then, a player would have to miss one game. That happened this year.

You are free to have a different opinion, but the facts are that college athlete smoke marijuana, and no one cares, including their coaches. That’s at every school on every team. If a coach came in and said that they were going to have a drug test in three weeks and everybody that fails is off the team, that coach would never be able to effectively recruit another student athlete ever again. That just wouldn’t fly.

No disrespect, but you have a very Pollyanna view of college athletes and their coaches. The reality is not anything close to what you have described. I’m not going to weigh in on the discussion of whether it’s harmful or anything like that, it’s just a fact. A high percentage of college students, including the athletes that we and every other fan base cheers for, smokes pot. It happens. It happens at Tennessee, Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, everywhere you can think of, a high percentage of their athletes smoke pot. It’s just a fact.

Ok I stand correctef on the mass random, however I believe if you check every year in Feb players get suspended for "violation of Team Rules" and then it always seems to occur again in mid to late Augusr, leading my thinking that there is a much higher chance of being tested early in each semester. It always shocks me how players are caught when they know the probabilities are higher.

I'm very aware of marijuana usage, hell I should own half of Mexico, but I also knew that once I had responsibilities to others beside myself, family, employers, fellow employees, even teammates, and knew that I stood a chance of being caught by testing, I was much more selective about my usage.

My point is simple, if your on scholarship, you are subject to random testing, normal students aren't. Why chance it?

If it affected my ability to keep my job then yes I would quit. But I also understand in my field that as long as I am successful at my job then there is no need for my employer to drug test.

Thanks, but that's not my question. My question is, If you knew you would be tested and you knew you would be fired , no exceptions, would you risk it?

Really? Aren't we all putting foreign substances into our lungs everyday trying to breathe the crap in the air? As an after thought, weed does no damage to the lungs and does not contribute to cancer or whatever.

the 'crap in the air' is harmful, but 'weed' does no damage? words cannot express how crazy that sounds

Stop believing what you read in high times...or at least stop repeating it...you sound ridiculous.

5 years old and several studies since don’r necessarily agree with this. The American Lung Association states the tar and chemicals from marijuana may be just as bad if not worse (tar).

And just as an FYI. I am a liberterarian but also a physician. I don’t care what you do or how much weed you smoke, as long as it doesn’t harm me or my kids. But I don’t like people using excuses that it is so much safer than other things and tobacco and whatnot.

The same things said about marijuana today were said about tobacco 50-70 years ago. Marijuana may not end up that bad but don’t act like burning something and then sucking it in your lungs is a great idea for the rest of your life.

Take it from an asthmatic that spent 3 days over Christmas in the ER with a respiratory illness on a non rebreather face mask

Marijuana use and risk of lung cancer: a 40-year cohort study. - PubMed - NCBI

Here is one of several studies showing it does increase cancer risk.

The jury is still out. It’s probably not as bad as tobacco but it sure ain’t benign.

Light em and toke me though. Don’t care that you do. Just don’t want people ignorant of risks or have the wool pulled over their eyes like was done for tobacco for years

(Oh, and a personal note. I think JAMA is a rag trash journal. Doesn’t effect this data though. NEJM and the Lancet are much less politically influenced and bought by drug companies. Can’t stand the AMA and glad to belong to my surgical specialty journal instead)

This exactly!!!!!

People promoting the use of marijuana do not have all of the facts, or are promoting only the facts that promote their cause. They are promoting information to a public that does not have all of the information to make informed decisions about the substance. Currently, we are in the same position with marijuana right now as to where we were with tobacco in the 1940’s and 1950’s. We have not developed enough long term evidence to keep people from making regrettable decisions. The problem with marijuana and our healthcare in the future will be that we will not have big corporations to sue to compensate for the financial impact of marijuana to the healthcare economy.
