I was working on the same basic routing you are referring to, but haven't had time to get it done yet. I was concerned about getting him lost as well.

realistically if you get him onto Airport Rd (HWY 75), it's just a straight shot all the way to Bowmantown. From there, make a left onto Oakland Rd and it will put him onto 11E and should be well out of range of any race traffic. According to Google Maps it's exactly 26 miles from the turn off of 394 until you hit Oakland Rd.

My only question would be can we make this a whole lot simpler by having him hit I-26 in Gray northbound and hitting I81 at Eastern Star, or would traffic still be jammed there?

also, if memory serves once you get past the airport there would be six red lights (mostly in Gray), plus crossing over HWY 81 at the Crossroads in Sulphur Springs. Other than that it's just scenic farm country, and he'd get to see my HS Alma Mater.

ok, i was mixed up then. i could have sworn you were giving him directions to Crockett in Jonesborough. i looked at a map and figured out those directions.

Bill I would go with your original suggestion. I think the traffic would still be much worse the other way.

fair enough. I can help with those directions if you want to try that way d4, I grew up with several friends in Bowmantown, even have family down there and I've made the trip from Sulphur Springs to Tri Cities Golf Course numerous times. FYI, Tri Cities Golf Course is only minutes from BMS. Once you get onto 11E, you turn left, drive through Greeneville and Mosheim as DND pointed out and hit 81 at Bulls Gap (where Bill Elliott sneaks in a few dirt races every year).

Or, depending on exactly where your hotel is, it might be quicker just to stay on 11E which will bring you into downtown Motown eventually. Gotta believe the interstate is the best bet from there though.

also please bear in mind that while I say straight shot, the road is anything but straight. You just don't really have to turn onto other roads.

Coming to the track this is ok, but you might consider the little short cut of exit 66 I told you about. Going back 394 gets pretty jammed up. But trying to tell you an alternative is not easy.

Buy Broyles a ticket and let him tag along as a live Tom Tom lol

that might be a good idea. I still think HWY 75 by the airport, through Bowmantown and onto 11E is a very good option if he's not worried about driving a scenic highway. This highway is big enough for tractor trailers to pass on each side without even worrying. It's a nice highway with no physical road problems, just realize it has some twists and turns on it.

Hey guys Ive come across a great deal for Bristol tickets, only we cant find a hotel near Bristol (of course).. The guy selling the tickets suggested Wytheville, VA, but Id rather stay west if possible.. I know a lot of you have been or are from the surrounding area so I'd appreciate any suggestions.. thanks :hi:

Even though I've got friends and family in the area, I looked years ago and looks like either Greenville or Roanoke was available. If there are hotels near Wytheville, that's not bad. Probably less than an hour from Bristol. Check hotels.com and see if you can find any rates below $100. Even western NC shouldn't be counted out. Asheville is probably 1.5 hours away.
The DoubleTree in Johnson City has rooms for $99. Looks like all others are over $223 and up!

d4, I sent you a couple of directions the way I was recommending to go. Let me know if those work. It's a cool drive through farm country if you just sit back and enjoy it.

there's not much to see in the dark after the race though.

i recommend waiting AT LEAST an hour after the race to head home. by then the sun is close to setting or, as was the case before extended DST, almost gone.

yeah. I was mostly talking about the trip there.

I'm sure once you get into Sulphur Springs and especially Bowmantown you can pull over and see PLENTY of stars if it's clear!:)

oh, the trip there is easy.

i guess for somebody like me who has driven every back way from Knoxville to the Tri-Cities, just to change up the view, i'd like to just get there ASAP.
