How did Auburn do it?

UT and Auburn were in almost the exact situation a few years ago. Auburn sucked, was going through a coaching change and had the NCAA looking into their program. All of the sudden they are a top 5 team. What can TN learn from this?

They have clearly defined what they can do offensively and theyplay to those strengths.

Other than that, I don't know.

They won a national title less than 3 years ago. The situations aren't even slightly comparable.

We had about three years where something like 37 players didn't work out for some reason. I can't remember the exact years but it was the last 2 of fulmer's and kiffen. What has happened to our program is just the snowball effect of not having any depth.

Don't worry, 2016 we will win the SEC.

I think the fact they hired a coach that was a coordinator there previously and he recruited many of the players there to fit his system. That, imo, is the most glaring difference between UT and Auburn.

They've recruited better over the past 3 years. Malzahn was only one year removed from coaching there. They found another Cam Newton waiting around in Juco. God does seem to favor the Tigers..

Auburn hasn't been close to UT's situation, unless you are talking about when Bowden took over while on probation. They were undefeated in 2004, had a couple rough years before winning a title by purchasing a quarterback. They didn't make 2 disaster hires, didn't have a coach leave after a year leaving them in chaos (2 weeks before signing day), didn't hire Derek Dooley, etc. The situations aren't even close.

Auburn never lost talent the way we did. We have had 4-5 years of bad coaching and mediocre recruiting.

Auburn's coach recruited most of these guys to play in his system before leaving a year. Now he is back and he has the talent needed for his system.

We do not and will not have the talent we need for a couple of recruiting cycles.

The situations do not compare at all.

If UT hired Cutcliffe in 2008 or 2009 then there may have been some of the positive effects Auburn has, meaning players he recruited, familiarity, etc

Auburn had top 10 recruiting classes in that span too.Just add better coaches and you can be a top 5 team.

Actually Chizik's record was very Dooley-esqe.

And the fact that they have had top 5 recruiting classes the past 4 years. The ship didn't need to be righted there. Just straightened. Here the ship needs to be brought back to the right ocean and then righted.

What David C is doing at Duke makes me wish we had hired him right after Phil.. Maybe he could have done better with recruiting here than he did at Ole Miss. David is getting it done..

Agree with this... He has his own players to work with who were already familiar with him. Huge difference from UT

his record was, but he had had success as a coordinator and wasn't Dooley in terms of how he led, treated people, etc. Records aside, he was NOT Dooley. He wasn't a great HC, but he was not Dooley. He also hired Malzahn which is still paying off and was the smartest thing he did, except that it ended up costing him his job. On the flip side, he would not have had his job as long as he did if not for Malzahn, so I guess it's a wash. If Dooley even made a great hire or kept a great asst coach, it could have made a big difference.

Auburn has an innovative offensive concept that the players match up with and they run it to perfection. UT, lacks all of these things. There isn't anything innovative or deceptive about our offense. We have players recruited for a prostyle attack. And, our execution is lacking in every level and unit involved in our O.

They are good, they have athletes, they have a good coach, they played at home and they hate Georgia like we do. That's my guess(es)

don't think he would have come right after Fulmer was fired , due to their friendship,but certainly believe he would have a year later after Kiffin left.

Great analogy. Their captain simply fell asleep at the wheel and was replaced with someone who knew the ship top to bottom. In our case, our previous captains repeatedly rammed icebergs until the ship sank to the bottom. Butch and staff are pretty much the salvage crew.

How can you compare Auburn to UT when they have a great QB and their HC was recently their OC who recruited those kids?
