How did Auburn do it?

Despite the whupping he put on us a few weeks ago, I have to respect Gus's glasses and sweater vest game. I like to call it Sunday school swag.

Oh, I respect the vest and the visor.

He is the new age version of Tressel and Spurrier.

And his wife has that hot look of a politician's wife.

I'm not sure Slive ignored it. With Saban's life partner a very big part of the SEC if the NCAA could have found something they would have, guarantee Saban and I forget the guys name knew what was going on but just couldnt prove it. I'm sure Slive didnt want AU getting caught though, with him having a goal of no teams on probation. He picked the wrong Conference to set that goal.

The NCAA may not have found anything but I question how hard they actually dug on the heels of the Reggie Bush issue and the Paterno mess.

And I'll stand by my assertion that Slive ignored it.

ESPN reported MSU compliance officials forwarded the alleged conversations to Southeastern Conference compliance officials last January, shortly after Newton announced he was going to Auburn.

Not looking for an open debate on the matter though as it's all under water under the bridge or over the dam.

I probably misworded what I was saying on Slive. He prob did overlook it, he wanted his best to keep sll SEC schools off probation. I do think they paid Cam and would bet anything if Saban's boy in the NCAA could have proven it he would. Auburn has done a damn good job keeping things hidden, somehow.

UT and Auburn were in almost the exact situation a few years ago. Auburn sucked, was going through a coaching change and had the NCAA looking into their program. All of the sudden they are a top 5 team. What can TN learn from this?

Coaching and recruiting it's that simple.

They won a NC bc they signed Cam Newton, and hired a dynamic OC in Gus Malzahn. Tennessee had an opportunity to get Cam if I recall, but chose Matt Simms instead. This is just another colossal example of Tennessee hurting itself through poor decision-making over and over again. If I remember correctly, Tennessee could have hired Gus Malzahn as well... We chose Derek Dooley. Pat UT on the back, once again, for that one. As bad as I want to feel bad for our situation I continue to go back to the simple logic that we've put ourselves here.

UT is probably the worst run program in the SEC!

Supposedly on Cam school's got outbid by AU if you believe Cam was paid, which I still do. I wouldnt have hired Malzahn 4is yrs ago, but the day Dooley was hired, supposedly Sumlin was also interviewed and was interested in UT. But Hamilton of course hired Dooley on recommenation from Saban. Yea how gullable was Hamilton for believing anything Saban would say, especially being at a rival school. But we also dodged a bullet on Muschamp saying no. Not that Dooley was a better hire, just shows Hamilton's poor decision making. But eventually things work out. Just think If Rich Rod had not changed his mind about the Ala job and stuck with accepting it instead of turning it down. No way in hell they would be on this run and who knows where Saban would be. Possibly Ohio St instead of CUM or maybe Michigan or NotreDame.

Negative

He chose to play defense. He left because he got kicked off the team for theft.

Incorrect. Yes he was kicked off but did not choose to play D. Wanted to play QB but he also never would have fit the offensive scheme GA runs.

Yeah, it certainly has been. Hopefully that is changing.

I hope and believe everything is turning around, not only in Football but all sports. I remember a time our Football, Baseball and Lady Vols were all playing at high levels. The Mens hoops was kinda hit and miss. But the Lady Vols are now playing well, we have a Football Coach who is recruiting at a very high level, the players are going to school, not getting in trouble or getting kicked off the team so the APR is as good as it can get. We have a successful Baseball Coach that is recruiting well and will get them back to where UT Baseball was once he gets his players in there. Our Mens Hoops has some really good players and if they can't make the Ncaa Tournament this yr then something is majorly wrong. Also have much more faith in Dave Hart than I ever did with Hamilton. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Outside of the Pearl Years the last 10few years in all Vol Sports has been hard but things are changing for the better. Think by 2015 all sports will be back to being competitive and winning again. And even TN HS talent has improved significantly which can only help.

Says the guy whose team is literally giving away home game tickets and still can't fill their tiny stadium. Go home.

The Vols can't sell out their stadium. Franklin is basically building a program from scratch at Vandy. They have the same loyal 30,000 show up to each game but they've got to grow it from there. The Vol fan base has been dwindling for the last 4 or 5 years.

30,000 is an exaggeration. More like 15,000.

Sold out for the UGA game. And Auburn. This Saturday will be packed too.

The only thing Franklin is building is his resume for a high profile job. You're delusional if you think Vandy is his destination job. Most Vandy fans are delusional, though.

.
Although Marshall played cornerback at Georgia, Bobo and other coaches say that was Marshall's decision. Bobo wanted him as a quarterback.

"No question. Our initial conversations with him in recruiting was quarterback. That's what we recruited him as the whole time. Then toward the end he had a change of heart and wanted to play defense, or another position. We felt he's such a great athlete that we'd let him play whatever he wanted to play.

"I thought he was an NFL corner when he was here."

I go to most all the Vandy games so I was there and you weren't. There was around 33,000 in attendance at the Vandy UK game. Out of those maybe 100 were UK fans. U do the math if U can. Vols fans know nothing about Vandy under James Franklin!

Do you think Vandy will win Saturday? Why? Serious question, not trying to start a fight or anything

I know Vandy's attendance is abysmal.

It took free tickets to get that many people there.

You said the same 30,000 people show up every game; that's incredibly wrong.

You clearly are retarded and don't keep up with football if you think these two programs were in Same shape

We regressed so badly under Dooley that we averaged 7 losses per season. The 2 years before he got here, we only averaged 6 and 1/2 losses a year. Dooley could have averaged 6 and 1/3 losses, but he lost 2 after the "final whistle" blew.

You're right....Dooley didn't do much worse than his predecessor(s)....and he even had arguably the most talented offense in school history to help him achieve mediocrity. If CBJ had Bray, Hunter, CP, and Rivera, what would this year have looked like?

How did Auburn do it? I'll explain.

When Chiz and Lame kitten took over, Auburn and TN were in almost identical situations. If you remember the year prior(2008) both TN and Auburn finished with identical losing seasons. Both programs had to replace tenured coaches who had had success.

In fact, in 2008 TN and Auburn played one another in Auburn and the game was so awfully close that really no team deserved to win.(Auburn barely won 14-12 in Auburn, but who really cares). It was a virtual pillow fight between two programs on the decline. In other words, both teams were about as even as you could get.

So both programs at the end of 2008 ran off their tenured coaches and hired new coaching staffs.

Auburn hired the Chiz and TN hired Lame kitten. Both of those coaches sucked as we all know having the benefit of hindsight. But there is one slight difference and here's why Auburn is currently in better position than TN.

The Chiz was at least smart enough to go out and hire the best OC in the country. He went to Tulsa and grabbed the nations #1 offensive guru in Gus Malzahn. Kitten didn't do that. As a result Auburn immediately turned around itself in 2009. Recruits took notice(at least the offensive ones) and Auburn began to bring in top10 recruiting classes because people wanted to play in Malzahn's offense.

From there TN and Auburn diverged.

The difference is Malzahn. TN also didn't help their case by going out and grabbing Dooley(a coach with zero accomplishments).

If TN wants what Auburn has then they need to start looking at guys like Chad Morris or Art Briles. Maybe even Rhett Lashlee(after a few more years). TN needs to sit down and find that OC or that DC who leads or is at the top in the nation in their trade and offer him.
