How do we factor Dooley and Sal?

Looking back had Dooley hired a semi competent DC that ran a 4-3, we would NOT currently have Butch Jones as our head coach. I know it's been said before but with just a decent defense we win at least two more games and go to a bowl and there was no way Dooley would have been fired after a 7-5 season. JMO. So thanks to both of them!

Past couple of days we've been given a lot of lessons about objectivity and homerism.

Dooley and Sal were abysmal.

Everytime I see Dooley with the invisible binoculars I cringe. I will never hear "for want of a nail" the same way again. "Shower discipline" is part of the Vol lexicon. The man compared our Vols to the Nazi Army and then apologized to the Germans listening to his spiel. This was our head coach who treated the job like an extended interview for a TV gig or comedy circuit.

Sal Sunseri makes the Incredible Hulk look like an erudite Harvard debater.

The results from these two masters of disaster showed - we lost 3 - 5 more games than we should have last year.

Let's shout out to Chaney too who did not coach Bray and who did not give our offense proper balance.

Coach Jones is killing it. If not Gruden, then Jones for me. Absolutely. He has a record of getting more with less throughout his career.

How do we factor Dooley and Sal into the upcoming season? I think we are WAY more talented than our record last year on both sides of the ball (clearly though, we lost a lot of talent on offense). Even if the offense loses 40% production (I don't think it will, btw), the defense should be 2x to 3x better. Oregon is our best chance at a major upset. I think it's a huge game for CBJ.

Who is this Dooley and Sal you speak of? I thought that was a bad dream and one I don't wish to reflect on or remember.

I'll say it again, I expect this year to be similar to 2010. We'll have a somewhat stagnant offense and a defense that keeps us in the ball game for the most part. With a little luck and assuming Coach Jones isn't as inept as Dooley, we'll win the close ones (LSU & North Carolina come to mind).

Mid season after Worley doesn't step up to the plate, someone else will step in. Will they be any better? God I hope so.

this

I don't hate DD, he just isn't SEC HC material. Some coaches are career coordinators and some are career position coaches (Sal). We had a good coordinator in Wilcox, should of kept him.

He left us, jumped from the sinking ship a year early. It would have taken a huge raise to have had a chance at keeping him. But then, he might have helped us have a barely winning record last year, and Dooley might still be here. That thought is quite disturbing.

It is idiotic to blame Chaney for any of last year and much less "not coaching" Bray. Bray was a head case and not very coachable.

Dooley under ideal circumstances with excellent coordinators that allowed him to be a CEO only... is a poor man's Les Miles.

That being said, Dooley is still HC with at least some "hope" here if Sunseri isn't hired. If you are going to be a CEO type of coach... you had better know how to hire. You can't make mistakes hiring. Dooley made a mammoth mistake. He also seemed to have a fixation on going to the 3-4 to be like Saban.

The effect? Jones is hands on, inspirational if a little corny, and intimately engaged in everything. About the opposite of Dooley. Dooley failed because he couldn't make a difference when needed- he was a CEO who couldn't change the printer cartridge. If Jones fails... he fails at least in large measure on his own ability. He will take the printer apart himself and fix it.

If Jancek is only mildly incompetent as a football coach... it will be a massive upgrade. Wilcox with a young, thin D that got no run game support and not great pass game support finished mid-pack in the SEC. If UT gets back to around 20 ppg then they'll be fine. I don't think it takes a master to get this D to that level. The elite D's in the SEC will be about a TD less than that. Sunseri allowed almost 40 ppg.

Agreed. If we would of had even a mediocre defense last year to go along with CJC's offense we would have won 9 games easy.

1. The pic of Abbot and Costello is dead-on. It actually looks like them. Well done, Raven.
2. Chaney did an admirable job his entire time in Knoxville. He occasionally abandoned the run too quickly ( a pet peeve of mine), but with the way the Defense was giving up points, I still give him some benefit of the doubt.
3. Wilcox was a 6 on a scale of 10 as DC. But that's all. But even a 6 would have been a vast improvement over what we had and, I agree, probably means 8-9 wins and more Dools.
4. Dooley X Sunseri = Butch Jones???? Huh?!? Wha...

'Cause we must not allow history to repeat it's self, and it is time to move forward. :hi:

eventually those jackwads may be regarded as saviors of TN football, because one more victory last year would have kept Fooley as HC.

Abysmal is too polite. This pair led a 2012 Vol team that gave up a record 428 points. 22 points more than the 2005 (205) /08 (201) Vols gave up combined.

The question for me is how much of the Dooley and Sal can be purged from this group. If it's at or near 100%, then we should be fine.

Dooley and Sal? One in the same. Every time I think of Sal, I remember Him Giving "SAL" signals for the play call during the game. It seemed to be some confusing mix of Martial arts and traditional sign language, and right beside him would be someone doing the same thing, but different.Defense was always confused....Offense just knew to "GO LONG"
