I was hoping maybe someone knew the answer. I'm betting it's a lot less than most would guess.
I don't recall if he was a true freshman or not but Reggie Cobb rushed for 133 yards vs Iowa (a good team back then) in the 1987 Kickoff Classic. Aaron Hayden was definitely a true freshman in 1991 vs Louisville and also had over 100 yards...not an easy question to find an answer for.
"The D looks great and if the new nose guard gets here I pray those soft backs of Tennessee try to run on us. Remember their stud freshman missed his whole senior year of high school because of a shoulder injury. He'll find out soon this is not high school anymore"

As far as UT is concerned Reggie Cobb did redshirt so as far as I can find the record for rushing yards by a true freshman in the opener is 109 yards by Aaron Hayden vs Louisville in 1991...Of course, the record should be Jamal Lewis in 1997 vs Texas Tech but for reasons I will never understand Fulmer and Co. saw it prudent to begin that year with Mark Levine at RB with Lewis, Henry and Stephens on the bench. Entirely possible I could be over looking someone though.
