How many spots left?

This is a great way to replenish some depth.

Do you know about Juco's? Do they count as recruits?

How many "recruits" do we have in the 2010 class?

Juco's count as recruits for that class.

I am not sure how many scholarships we have to give exactly in 2010, but I suspect it's around 25. One of the recruitniks will probably pop by and tell us exactly.

Remember though, that early enrollees can be back-counted to the previous year if there were unused slots.

Also, all because we have 25 or whatever number of scholarships to give to recruits, doesn't mean we will sign 25 just to sign them. Although because we are already short of the 85 number, I imagine we will do what we can to get 25 athletes.

Seems like the number right now for next year would be 26, if everyone makes it in. If not, we could sign another 28.

jucos count with the class. the most you can sign in a class is 25. early enrollees allow it to go up to 28. 85 is the limit of scholarship athletes we can have on the team.

Anybody have the breakdown for each class?

Freshmen (2010) = ?
Sophomores (2009) = ?
Juniors (2008) = ?
Seniors (2007) = ?

what does the 85 number mean, players on the football team or what ,just wondering?

It's the total scholarship limit set by the NCAA. you can't have more than 85 football players on scholarship at your team at any given time(walk-ons don't count towards this.)

Tennessee is currently now 8 spots short of this, due to all the defections over the last couple of years, as well as a couple of recruits not qualifying in that time. Since we can only sign 28 a year by SEC rules, we can't necessarily replenish those spots right away.

Transfers from USC are a rare blessing, as they don't have to sit out for a year and don't count towards the 28 limit either. In affect, they immediately close our shortfall of players, building depth.

You mean this would be the enrollees considered a part of the 2010 class? I imagine at least three of these are early enrollees, so that would mean we could technically sign two more "recruits" for this class?

These are the basics:

No more than 85 total enrolled on scholarship (NCAA rule).

Can sign max of 28 per year (SEC rule).

Can enroll max of 25 per year (NCAA rule); but can backcount current year enrollees to preceding year if less than 25 enrolled that year.

Pretty sure that the only transfers that count against the 25/28 class limits are JUCO recruits; i.e., they're essentially new recruits just like HS recruits, not "transfers".

So UT can take as many USC transfers as will fit under the 85 limit.

I understand this to mean that transfers from other BCS schools do not count against any recruiting class. For instance, Malik would be fine even if we had signed 28 in the 2008 class.

If all the recruits for the 2010 class, the one we just signed, make it in: he is saying we would have 26 scholarships to give. If any don' qualify, it could go as high as 28 (because we could back-count 2, I guess).

This may have been what you were asking, I am just trying to clarify.

I'm pretty sure that is correct.

Yes, because obviously all 28 of those guys aren't here any more, or we wouldn't be below the 85 limit.

If you signed 25 guys a year, for four years and didn't redshirt any of them, you would have 100 guys (15 OVER what you can have). We've lost a lot of people over the last few years.

We have had a lot of kids leave the program(therefore lose their scholarships, hence freeing up some scholarships)

where do we get the schlors to offer tranfers from usc?

From the 85 limit set by the NCAA. We have as of right now 77 football players on scholarship. So we have room for eight more. This is due to the losses over the last few years with the coaching changes.

Why would we have to have two not qualify in order to back count? I know you can only enroll 25, but I also heard early enrollees can be back counted, so I'm not sure why it matters if they qualify or not.

they backcount to the previous class. so in order to do that, your previous class cant be full. for example, if you sign 23 in 2010, you can only backcount 2 in 2011 because that fills up your 2010 class. make sense?

Because we wouldn't have used 2 scholarships on the imaginary EE's that don't qualify and could enroll 3 early next year and sign 25 on NSD

To summarize:

I understand:
1) We have 77/85 scholarships assigned
2) We can sign up to 28, but only enroll 25 per year
3) Transfers do not count against any year's recruiting class

Unclear:
1) Do early enrollees count against the current years 25 enrollees
2) With 26 "signed" players for this year, are we done, or is there wiggle room to sign more players.
3) Obviously we have lost players in the past few years, but do the recruiting numbers from those classes have anything to do with transfers?

3 of this year's 27 count towards 2009 because of early enrollment. I'm pretty sure more than 3 enrolled early but that's the max number we could backcount. There early enrollees for 2010 count for 2009's class because they enrolled in school early.
